Brilliant as always. Finally settled on a Yoga 7i i5 1335 only 8g ram but should be fine ;) Love all your work. I really wanted to go with a surface but for the money the Yoga was to good to pass up. After getting my hands on one of these, I can't wait to see the next generation of touch laptops.

Excellent video! Microsoft, Intel, AMD and Qualcomm (we can lump Apple's M-series chips into this as well) are definitely pursuing the Performance/Efficiency Cores set up going forward. Thank you for your in-depth testing on this! I've got a seemingly-ancient Surface Go 1st gen that I still use for StaffPad, but it's getting incredibly long in the tooth, and may get replaced in the near future.

Thank you so much for such a detailed, practical and full review on using a Surface Pro 9 for music production, I am using a Surface PRO 6 (thanks also for the great review that you've made in the past that was also super helpful to decide buying and using it) and considering upgrading to PRO 9.
I have one question for you that have not been commented on your review.
As you certainly know the PRO 6 (i5 model) is a fanless design. What about the fan on the PRO 9 ? is it noisy for recording audio in a quiet room with vocals or acoustic instruments? Is it disturbing when using it when running a medium side project ? thanks in advice

Every time I see this I am disgusted at Apple for not giving their IPad Pro users (especially those with M1 and M2 chips the same as the desktop processors) the option to dual boot to either IOS or MacOS.
Even if they don't officially support it, they should give the users the option to do this, perhaps as a "public beta"', or as a "hobbyist platform".

  • @SERGE_Tech

ok so i watched all your surface videos and heres what I can say about this new surface pro 9 and what could be done to make it work more stable. The reality is its probably stable enough for most average users but a power users could push the surface pro 9 even further but the question is does the power user want to deal with this nonsense, probably because the surface is still a one of kind device, ill be getting one for sure because I'm cool with tinkering even though it does make me a bit mad.
ok so heres what you can do.
    >>>you could try disabling the 2 performance cores in task manager or disable the efficiency cores. it is also possible that a combination of disabled cores is needed. buttt I think the 2 performance cores will generate a disproportionate amount of heat when compared to the efficiency cores, so perhaps just enabled 4-6 efficnecy cores and either let them run at any ghz they want or cap them at 3gh or 2.6ghz and this should still be substantially faster then the quad core 11th gen.
task manager allows you to select how many cores you want enabled or disabled however it disables the cores in sequential order which could be forward or backwards, another words you might not have the option to disable the performance cores or all the efficiency cores and may be orced to do 2 performance and 2 efficiency cores now think about it 10 cores if its running at 4 cores its gonna have a much higher cooling envelope.
also try to set the fan speed to a constant so it doesnt have to hunt for fan speed or ghz both should probably be set to a constant level.
now there is this other thing that I know is possible but not super sure how it works, you can select specific cores to only run a specific application so another words the cores wont need to worry about other apps and this will reduce task switching between apps but not within the app it self which may demand threads in some weird order.
the moral of the story here is that apple has left intel before this is the second time they left intel mostly because intel cpu is 1/4th the efficiency of arm m1 chips but the true culprit here is the poor software because on an intel based mac it runs music applications better then the exact same hardware on windows, how do i know because I have tested this on my channel and have been conducting performance tests since 2014 made about 500 videos.
when we just look at what the processor is the 12 gen cpu is a very strong good cpu and it should run but microsoft failed at making a good cooling system they only put 1 fan, surface pro 2 used to have 2 fans and it ran great! the issue is they wanted it to be thin instead of running smoothly and its like they dont know who to blame, do they blame them selfs for not making the cpu power efficent enough or do they blame the fan heat pipe design which is considered an older inferior design, a vapor chamber would have been much better kinda like what they use in razor blade laptops they could make a smaller version of that or just add a second fan by shrinking the motherboard.
they should have continued development of the core m cpu which didnt even require a heatsink and it ran at 5 watts max and could go up to 3.5ghz and if this had a fan and heatsink it could have ran perfect but I guess because no 1 entity controls the expereince of the hardware and software theres just no way to make a small perfectly smooth device because a bunch of different designs are applied to one cpu that they hoped would be perfect for all scenarios but its not thats why you need an ultra low watt cpu that can run x86 why intel why did you abandon core m it was perfect, you wouldnt even need 10 cores, just do core m with 6 cores and good cooling thats it but the cpus are just made, intel should just make there own laptops, microsofts history shows that in 10 years of surface devices they still struggle and havent learned all there lessons.
its why apple controls 100 percent of the experience, I almost got a surface pro 9 a few days ago but settled on a alienware x17 r2 with 12800h and 3080 ti gpu and 32gb ram because someone else ended up buying the surface I wanted. ill be making my own videos about this topic soon. cheers!

Robin! Long time, first time. Two questions: One, how do you think this setup would deal with a bunch of Granular stuff, like Native's Ashlight and Straylight? I have a Surface Pro 3 (i5, 8GB Ram) that I'm using now, and it chokes itself out immediately. I'm assuming a higher level Surface Pro 9 would handle granular much better, but I'd still like confirmation.
Also, what part do you think Win11 is playing in all this? What if your SP9 was running Win10? Would you expect it to be worse? Thanks! :)

Nice video. Could you tell a little bit about the fan? At what temperature does it turn on. Is it louder than the Surface8 fan. And last question. It seems you are satisfied with the Surface Pro 9, but is the 9 better or worse than the 8. @@MoltenMusicTech My sp8 has a fan and it turns on when the temperature reaches about 47°C. I know the other video.
When it comes the this video, I wonder if all the cores of the SP9 really run at the same clock speed. Many people switch of the efficiency cores, because they seem to make problems. Steinberg also recommends to not use the efficiiency cores. I also wander, when you set the CPU speed to 99%, if this does really make any sence, because the base clock of the new CPUs is much lower then the base clock of the SP8.
It seems, that I should stay with my SP8 and wait for the SP10. Hope, that It will be presented in a few month.

It all depends if you’re having problems. I wasn’t really having any problems and so it’s just happily working. In the past the variable cpu temperature/clocking issues caused glitching that were instantly solved by locking the cpu to stock. It’s not the case here. So, as with the sp8 it seems to work pretty well by itself. You only really need to dig deeper if there’s a problem to solve.

Thanks so much for your reviews on the both the surface pro 8 and 9 for working with music software. I'm looking at buying one for gigging and running Garritan and Vb3ii in live situations. Can you recommend which one would be better suited if any, I'm guessing the 9 and initially had worries that no headphone jack would be a problem but you cleared the fact the double usbc ports get round that with an adaptor. I was hoping to avoid having to use an audio interface as its more hardware to setup but guessing that might be necessary. Please advise

    • @MoltenMusicTech
      @MoltenMusicTech  4 місяці тому

I would say that an audio interface is always necessary for running pro level music software. It will give you better performance, reduce the strain on the processor, better quality connections - no one wants to rely on a minijack and flimsy adapter in a live situation - and the software will understand the ASIO drivers better than Windows WASAPI drivers. There are great little boxes available from Zoom, Arturia and others.
There's no a massive difference between the Surface versions in terms of power for music production. The SP9 has a much nicer screen and a different approach to CPU architecture. Whether that's better or worse is hard to say - all I can do is make a video of what I got it to run and you have to decide if that translates to what you're doing.
      All the best with that.

I'd suggest using ThrottleStop to temporarily disable TurboBoost and/or tweak power settings in general, like PL1 and PL2 boost behavior (there you set target power draw and for how long it could boost to that). with some trial and error you could find wattage at which CPU could boost safely, keeping up with temps.
Additionally, 12th gen intels might be not so great for music production after all, because in my experience there's far too big of a gap in perfornamce capability between P and E cores, and neither OS nor your DAW care by default which cores to use at given moment, so I've seen very rocky DSP graph because it would occasionly give E cores heavy chains to process. You can however, use Set Affinity option in task manager for given process and disable certain cores, so this process can't use them, if you want to eliminate this jitter.
I got myself Asus Flow Z13, 2022 model with 12th gen i9. Understanding that I wouldn't really be using it on battery for long periods of time anyway (if you try to run it at full load, then at best it gets 2h of battery life, while if you try to save on every tiny bit possible, you could only get up to 6h still), and performance is more of a concern to me, this turned out to be quite good for given formfactor (13" tablet) and things I intended to use it for (including running DAW on it). But, as I mentioned above, this uneven architecture of new intel CPUs did impede on it's potential. However, considering it has 6 P-cores, with 2 logical processors each, I just went and disabled all 8 E-cores in BIOS thinking that even with no E-cores the power of P cores would still be limited by thermal headroom. And indeed I got much more stable performance in Bitwig (my preferred DAW) by doing this, and still needed to use ThrottleStop to tweak power limits for turboboost, so it would not exceed ~96C on long fully loaded session. and that gives me about 4-4.3Ghz stable boosting for however long I need. Naturally, in such condition it's leaps and bounds beyond Surface Pro 9 capabilities, so I can acutlly use it as main machine for music making needs.

@@MoltenMusicTech at the very least for ability to disable turbo just temporarily by turning it on with 'Disable Turbo' option it's worth having around. mostly no other options do anything on 12th gen intel (and beyond) it seems, only TPL options seem to work (that's for tweaking turbo boosting, instead of disabling it).

They don't tend to have ASIO drivers for realtime low latency audio. You're better off getting an audio interface designed for music recording and not just playback imho.

Robin is a master in tweaking a windows notebook to make it a decent audio workstation. In the past he wrote suggestions to make performance mode active that I used with some notebooks. Successfully.
Then I made a mistake and bought an expensive 14 inches gaming powerful notebook. With i7 10th generation.
It was a nightmare, no way to make it play very simple projects.
Because some systems are assembled with bad drivers (graphics, network, etc) that prevent any audio performance.
In some cases a windows notebook is totally unable to perform music production software.
My solution was drastic. I sold the gaming notebook and bought an Apple MacBookPro M1.
End of nightmares, end of tweaking, end of lost nights. Just switch on and play music.
My experience: stay away from i7 and gaming monsters. If you buy a notebook be very careful and get one with good back order management.
If you build a tower computer, trust on very good components and drivers.
Example: I tested 3 different NUCs and they were superb with audio. But with notebooks I struggled too much.

I bought a 10th gen i7 windows laptop a few years back and it has run flawlessly. It uses one of the type h (high power) processors in a gaming chassis so has very good cooling and runs plug ins very well. It was built by a pc specialist in the UK who also sell guitars and synths etc as a pro audio system. They pick components specifically for this purpose (eg. Motherboards). Buying a regular consumer pc can be risky for audio work - my son's dell gaming laptop has issues with running a daw due to some of the motherboard drivers while my older Lenovo was fine.

      @@MoltenMusicTech oh.
Well, I looking to buy either a SP 8 or 9. And I would be using it for live performance, so for me getting as little delay as possible is a must. On my current Home PC using ASIO, I'm able to get around 2ms of output delay with 192kHz sample rate and low buffer, it sounded great. I'm not really a producer.
So I would like to know what do the SP8 and 9 has to offer that respect.

    • @MoltenMusicTech
      @MoltenMusicTech  3 місяці тому

Gosh, 2ms and 192kHz is some seriously powerful stuff. The Surface Pro is not a high performance machine, it's designed to save power, cut the CPU and exist on as little as possible. It's totally unsuited to music production, but it sure is pretty. I really like the interface and creative potential of the form factor but that's at the expense of high-level audio performance. My advice, especially in live performance where you want as much headroom as possible, is to run it at 48kHz at around 8-10ms with a 128 or 256 sample buffer. It will give you the sort of performance you see in this video. Going for such a high sample rate and low buffer size with result in the Surface catching fire, or simply continuously glitching. Easing off on both will make for a much happier time. Hope that helps.

@@MoltenMusicTech Just checked, it was at 96kHz and 64 samples buffer size, 0.7 ms lol (there are a lil bit of artifacts here and there).
I guess maybe the SP does not meet what I need as 10 ms is a lot for me. Thanks for the response!

    • @MoltenMusicTech
      @MoltenMusicTech  3 місяці тому +1

I would get a second opinion on your latency there. While 0.7 is the theoretical time it takes to divide 64 samples by 96kHz there are latencies in any system which will add to that. Less than 2ms in any audio system is very rare and is probably what one experiences playing an acoustic piano. 3ms is usually a good aim and as most systems sneak a couple of ms in without telling you, is probably more realistic and feels like standing 6feet from your guitar amp. Laptop USB technology is usually not very good and the drivers are so bothered with power concerns that they can add a few more ms to your total. A desktop PC will always win out as USB is much more baked in. 10ms for me is completely playable, but we all have our own feels on this. Apple MacBooks operate around 10-15ms and many live performers use them without any interface. I'm just saying that you have high expectations which might result in frustrating your desire to perform live. But good luck finding what you need.

Intel thread director is the app for windows 11 that you want to look into where you can lock clock speeds. Its actually the reason thst windows 11 was rmade. Intel needed Microsoft to build a core management system to be able to manage the new hybrid cpu core architecture that alder lake (intel 12th gen) introduced.

Do you have a link for the software you mention? I can't find any app that gives you access to it. The Thread Director technology appears to be baked into the processor and is doing its thing. If you can get to it via the Intel XTU software then sadly the Surface is not compatible with it - you can't run the software. Google is not helping me at the moment. Thanks!

At some point you'd think this wouldnt be a problem with Version 09. This is why I stopped using windows/pc's. Found myself doing more IT than computing. Went with OSX and no more Asio4All, no more registries, program files searches, no more third party plugins just to see thumbnails for my photoshop files, no more of a bunch of stuff that just work on OSX. PC's have their place in the market but not for the guy who just wants to get busy and uses the Adobe Creative suite all day err day. Surface pro 7 stays in the drawer unless im using Aseprite to do pixel art and Concepts app. For drawing, its great.

Recently MacBooks have had horrible cooling though, and if you you're trying to use Ableton through a touch interface windows is the only option really, seeing how it's not on ipad, although I absolutely will concede that ios has a great offering in the way of music creation apps, and you're not wrong about Adobe. It absolutely works better on Macs.
You're just not really gaming on Macs, and you're not going to get the best rendering performance for 3d modeling with Macs, and even price to performance these days Macs prices haven't gone up too much, but the cost of PC's has. If you look at high end windows laptops they go for around the same MacBooks, and higher, but you're not going to find MacBooks with Nvidia gpu's in them.
I'd have to say that my biggest gripe with Apple these days is that you can't replace the storage device on most of their products, which I find pretty anti-consumer friendly. They constantly force you to buy their proprietary cables and even tried to figure out a way they could squeeze more money out their customers even after the EU made a law that was intended to force them to adopt the Industry standard phone charger specification. They were going to use the connector, but have their cables be the only ones that would work with iPhones, then the EU made it very clear that that was not acceptable.
