Croc is my all time favourite game from my childhood, I don’t know why it stuck with me so much but I still play it on both PS1 & PC to this day over multiple years. I’ve been holding off playing this since the announcement so I can enjoy it more when it comes out near the end of the year.
If i had to guess, the ambient reverb hasnt been included yet because they're still streamlining the audio engine. After all, the music doesn't have to be in CDDA audio anymore. If it was a quirk exclusive to the console versions they'll probably end up using a unique reverb that carries across all versions.
So glad they are putting more traditional controls into the remaster, will make it so much easier to play. The tank controls really killed it for me back when it originally released and when I played it more recently. Having more traditional Mario 64 like controls should make it much easier to platform and really enjoy. Wonder if they are going to keep the password system in? A few years ago when I went back to the game for a bit, I went online to find some passwords so that I could finally see later parts of the game and try out levels which I was unable to get to while growing up, and I really enjoyed that.
The removal of tank controls on the analogue sticks is enough to get my attention, since I don't have much nostalgia for this game, which would make it easier for me to get to grips with.
Most of the time that baked in reverb is only audible in cave levels when the music fades out. That and if I'm not mistaken it's only applied to sfx that croc makes (jump, tail attack, stomp) and his footsteps. I'd guess it's just not implemented yet.
never thought I would see you discuss croc, I agree though the lack of reverb is disappointing, and I feel the ui change for the gems looks bad everything else seems like an improvement, though part of me knows I will be switching between classic mode and remastered mode regularly. I didn't even think about early builds as bonuses until you brought it up that would be really cool.
It's crazy how this game's development mirrored PlayStation's development. For those who don't know, the reason this game has so many parallels with Mario (like ?-Boxes, worms that come out of literal warp pipes, Baron Dante having minions that are just smaller versions of him ) is because original this was going to be a Yoshi game. But just like the PlayStation itself, the devs decided to make it their own product.
Alright, damn, didn't know about the lack of reverb... I feel like they're staying a little too true to the PC version there, as seen with the image of the crystal counter and the gong holder 😅 hope they don't forget to meddle with that before release. And yeah, the font is a bit blander too, the colored crystals don't spin... this seems to be more of a port of the PC version rather than of the PS1 version. The reflections on the textures could also use some work, yeah...
I'm going to guess they likely only had the source code of the PC version backed up and the PS1 one was lost, or they just couldn't find it after much effort and just had to settle for what they had.
Well made observations. This game's annoucement was a surprise to be sure, but warmly welcome one. I still have the original PS1-version on the shelf ready to be played any time. I'm not too keen on that new waxy look, but hey, they provide alternatives! Hopefully they add proper ending scene to the secret ending boss.
This video has made me even more excited for the release of the remaster. I'm very happy with how it looks and I never even thought we'd get a remake, but some of the cons you've mentioned 'concern' me. The lack of the reverb/echo effect in the caves sucks, like the game can work without it but I think it adds such a nice atmosphere to the caves. The crystal counters could also look better, as pointed out in the video but then again it's not the worst thing ever and won't ruin the game. All in all, this is really really fucking cool
I was really surprised with this games announcement. I never played the full game, but I did play it on a demo disc when I was a kid and liked it. I think I will pick this up if there’s gonna be a physical version.
Back in the day this one was very impressive because of how little the graphics warped and wobbled compared to other PS1 games. Did they add a software based Z-buffer or something? I hope Croc 2 also gets a remaster (it's my favorite in the series) and after that a brand new Croc game!
As a PC gamer, the PlayStation version still looks the best. Everything just looks so......clean i would say with the remaster. for some reason when I compare the visuals, I see more vibrant and artsy colors when I look at the PS version. And plus the cave ambient reverb makes it more immersive.
I think they should have gone for the demake of the Saturn version instead, then they should have made demakes of that demakes. Wire fames lots and lots of controlled visual glitches no textures. But add new lighting affect and 3d transparent selowets. Oh and would love to see CROC.MINIGOLF too
I'm wondering if you play in Retro Mode, whether you will get the original HUD and music/sound effects as well, or if that will still all be the remastered versions. The lack of a reverb/echo in the remaster is sad, and I would be nice if you could also change to the original sounds as well as the original graphics. Apart from the HUD and missing reverb, however, this looks like a great remaster, and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm especially looking forward to playing with modern controls, because I struggled with the tank controls back in the day.
i was like 3 or 4 playing this on my dad’s pc so i never made it very far (like barely out of the first area let alone to the first boss 😅) but i totally blocked out that the original was tank controls holy moly
If your asking me... textures got upscaled, models got a lil overhaul, making them a lil bit smoother,,, But tbh. I don`t see a "Mustbuy" Im missing some modern systems like Magnetic Crystals and such.. Played that game several years ago.. but dunno if it`s worth a second try.. It looks a lil bit too much like the old game.. If you know what I mean..
much better than just releasing a rom like LRG, but yeah i hope they tweak the colors/lighting. grass texture is especially ugly the way its upscaled, the modern camera sounds great
Game looks fun like it was years ago but I hope people don’t jump to conclusion that it’s might be a bad game like how people are saying that Dead Space Remake is bad.
glad they added the different modes as I the new look is kinda... worse? looking than the original. Not sure how to describe it but the textures seems so bland and smoothed out compared to the ps1 textures. More cartoony, but not in a good way. The display modes makes it better but not as much as I'd hope :/ Anyway, CAN'T wait to play croc again with better controls and resolution!
SERIOUSLY hope they are still working on the graphics. Everything is too bright and bland in this version. THe changed controls and camera will remove a lot of the difficulty the game was famous for. I hate when someone necros a perfect old game, puts a bit of makeup on it, and tries to say "It's still good! It's still good!" As it is, it looks like they really only care about cashing out on the nostalgia glasses...
Kind of surprised at the general warm reception of this remake. The devil is in the details and feels like they've missed quite a few here. The retro mode and screen filters look pretty good (minus the issues stated here) but the remastered look has completely blown textures, assets which are way too simple to be enjoyed at this resolution and just an overall lack of charm. Feels like a spyro reignited style "reimagining" might have worked a bit better, obviously a different scale and budget but the new look seen here just looks a bit cheap and plastic.
The price will ultimately decide everything. If it's something reasonable, like 20 or so bucks then fine. I'll take it. But if they ask some absurd 40 bucks or above, then i'm sorry, but this basically 1:1 remaster is nowhere near worthy of that price. Maybe if they bothered to add some extra content but if all they did was improve controls, added bloom effect and AI upscaled textures then that's going to be a discount only purchase for me.
I'd imagine this game being way too easy with modern movement/camera controls, and it was already pretty easy. I wouldn't mind checking this out though, I do love me some Croc.
Wait... it's only Croc 1?! What a waste, like the Panzer Dragoon remaster that was just the first game. The greed of getting full price by separating the game into two parts just means no one buys the first one and the second gets cancelled. Who gets to make these awful marketing decisions? ACCOUNTANTS?!
never understand that people as a kid didnt end up games by far this is the easiest i done it 100% as a kid same with spyro1 and abes odyssey and exodus of course i had nightmares from playing abe same as from tomb raider1

@@TroboTicTac No a remake would be them literally rebuilding the game from scratch in terms of coding and art. But the devs stated they're using the source code of the original game to build this, so by definition it would be a remaster since it's re-mastering the old source code and not being a new creation.
It's patently obvious to anyone with half a brain cell that this is a remaster using the source code. Literally nothing is being remade. I swear some people should need a license to use the Internet 🤦
It's a GoG exclusive. I am sorry but the trailer appeared and this video is a bit outdated. The company skipped Steam and I can't complain Steam really can't make PlayStation 1 types work well with bugs and glitches and of course no support updates only for more problems to occur. GoG is a better experience for it and though I don't have GoG it really pains me that we also can't get Croc 2. Though hope the word skip could mean later I can't for say to speculation any truth of that matter.
Oh, come on. The game was pretty average back then, and it seems to have been remade 1:1 with all its weaknesses intact, just with slightly better graphics. You’re better off sticking with the PS1 version.
You are comparing to the playstation version while the PC version is being remastered... That doesn't have much sense. The "issues" you see were present in the PC version all along.
Croc is my all time favourite game from my childhood, I don’t know why it stuck with me so much but I still play it on both PS1 & PC to this day over multiple years. I’ve been holding off playing this since the announcement so I can enjoy it more when it comes out near the end of the year.

I never got very far as a kid, but still love this game. The soundtrack is amazing ☺️
Echo was a brand feature of Croc's sounds and music.

3D audio has multiple options these days. Even Steam has its own open source solution.

That lack of reverb is a crime! It's like they forgot how important audio is to the experience and just concentrated on the graphics.
maybe they just haven’t implemented that yet
