    TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG
    -DIR : Nicolas Winding Refn
-DOP : Darius Khondji , Diego García
    -Music : Cliff Martinez
Composition refers to how the elements on screen (actors, scenery, props, etc.) appear in respect to each other and within the frame itself.
Film composition, or composition in film, is a rather complicated concept when you realize just how much is involved.
Film composition follows similar standards as photography composition.
By studying the location, the lighting, deciding on a lens, where you place the camera, all of these decisions combine when deciding on composition.

I’ve been very slowly watching this show since it came out, I’ve been trying to stretch this amazing show out for as long as I can, because when it’s over, it’s over. I’m on episode 6 now.😁

the fact that you chose these exact shots, and timed them perfectly, and let the soundtrack roll to retain the atmosphere of the show... just beautiful work. You made art out of art.

The composition is amazing but what blows my mind is the coloring and texture because I'm assuming this was shot on video. Video has never looked so good. The neon nights were seductive, I didn't want them to end. The desert days were harsh but they made cinematic sense.

By "this was shot on video" do you mean digital cinematography?

    • @MastersofCinematography

In my opinion, these feelings are the effect of 1.lighting (because lighting is the most important principle of cinematography), 2.color correction and 3.lenses (because Panavision Vintage lenses are used in this series).

@@MastersofCinematography I never made a distinction between the two but you're right. I've always thought either or film or video. And video usually looks so artificial and not in a pleasing way:)

@@MastersofCinematography I think so too, color tells an underlying emotional story. Last night I watched WHITE NOISE, I found the horrific rainbow of macdonald's colors jarring and almost unwatchable.

Refn's latest serie, "Copenhagen cowboy" also has killer cinematography/composition...but then again, it's to be expected from him.

@@MastersofCinematography It's for a very "niche" public though, (or 100% hardcore fans of Refn's style). I actually loved it too. I must admit, i don't actually like the way Refn directs his actors. (little dialogues, little emotions, stares etc...) but it actually worked great for Copenhagen Cowboy. The only downside is that we're not likely to see a season 2. i don't think Netflix will order a new season. All that said.... The cinematography in this series was stunning.

4:34 exactly dynamic symmetry and not a frame within the fram?
in fact, it is not so easy to immediately determine which compositional solution is currently in the frame.
where can I read about it in more detail what is better to learn?

    • @MastersofCinematography

      Thanks for your comment.
It can definitely be frame within the frame.

There is not a complete and correct source about composition. It has many different aspects, but by searching in photography articles, many things can be achieved.

Great series, and fantastic video. The music took me back to the intensity of the show, and I was happy to learn about how they construct such beautiful images in some of my favorite scenes. 2:07 and the club scene from episode 2 were my favorites from the series!
