  • May’s flowers have bloomed at Christie’s with Georgia O’Keeffe’s 1928 masterpiece ‘Red Poppy’ which will be on view at Rockefeller Center.
‘Red Poppy’ epitomises the striking originality that has established O’Keeffe as one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century. O’Keeffe’s flower paintings revolutionised the still-life genre through their scale, format and colour with the present example magnifying her artistic innovation. Borrowing compositional cropping techniques of contemporary photographers, O’Keeffe zeroes in on the blossom’s centre, juxtaposing deep blacks with the resplendent orange and red petals in breathtakingly fluid detail.
O’Keeffe’s limited series of only seven red poppies are inarguably among her most bold and striking flower paintings. Daring color fields of orange and red petals converge into the deep, dark center of the flower, the black focal point underscoring the powerful, almost untamed vibrancy of the blossom. Indeed, O’Keeffe’s dealer and later husband Alfred Stieglitz referred to one of her poppies as “that wild red picture.”

Too much imagery and too fast. Try to linger.
