  • Ferry Across The Sound of Kerrera To Gylen Castle on Kerrera Island
A trip to Kerrera. What to see and do.
Apart from Lismore the other small island worth a trip, in the Oban bay area, especially if you enjoy quiet walks is Kerrera. To get from Oban to Kerrera you will need to head in a southerly direction to catch the small flat-bedded Kerrera ferry. It's about a mile and a half out of the town, down to Gallanach where you board the ferry that crosses the Sound of Kerrera.
If your holiday falls at a peak time then you will enjoy the quite of this island with a ferry that only holds a dozen or so passengers. The island is about 5 miles long by 1 and a half miles broad with the walking being a mixture of road and tracks. The walking can be scenic with excellent views especially from the higher elevations.
Accommodation is available for anyone wishing to stay for a few days to do all the walks, although it's a good idea to book in advance. But there are plenty who will just make a day out of it returning to the mainland on the later ferries. Bear in mind that the ferry does have a break at lunchtime.
Gylne Castle ruin and the Tea Room at the Bunkhouse are favourite walks on the south end of isle of Kerrera. This is the only tearoom on the island so having a packed lunch might be a good idea if the cafe is not on your itinerary. Keep in mind where you are though. If you expect your swipe card or any card to be of any use here you can forget it. So remember to bring cash with you.
The south of the island walk is the one most folk do for a quick trip mainly to see the picturesque castle and enjoy a break at the tea room. Although there are many who also do the north for an extended walk. The north route takes you to the marina where
you will find a restaurant. A point of interest that you will probably have seen from Oban is the obelisk shaped monument to David Hutcheson.
David Hutcheson was an early founder of the steamboat ferry system that we know today as early as 1851.He opened up many routes to the islands and the mainland of the west coast of Scotland. He loved everything about this area and as a result his friends laid his remains in this land he loved so much.
No matter how much of Kerrera you walk you’re sure to enjoy the peace and quiet. You will almost forget about everything you left back on the mainland. Even though the ferry across the sound of Kerrera is only 5 minutes sail. Depending on what time of year you intend to visit, take note of the ferry times and expect the tea room to be closed until around Easter time.
So make sure to add Kerrera to your to do list next time in Oban.
