- Time for a challenge! H&H’s Joel Bray and Reiko Caron bring high style to a tiny, sterile space - a university dorm room at Ryerson University in Toronto. Learn how to fully transform a dull room into a stylish, young adult living space by adding personality with fabrics and accessories. Oh, and Joel builds a headboard in under 10 minutes. No big deal.
The space came with a number of restrictions, like bossy carpeting and a dull blue color palette, so Joel and Reiko had to work with the room’s decor instead of against it. After repositioning the furniture and removing a lot of the pieces, like burgundy curtains, a side table, a task lamp, chair, and “prison bedding,” an extension rod was added to display layered sheer and dark drapes. The same drapes are used to hide the closet, but on shower curtain rods since they’re adjustable. Joel created a headboard with cardboard, foam and pretty patterned fabric for the bed, which was styled with throw pillows and a sequined duvet. A classic table lamp brings light to the bedside and desk, while an inexpensive large framed map - which was DIY’d - adds the final pop of pretty, helping to transform the 100-square-foot room into a stylish, young adult living space.
They're complaining about how bad this dorm room is. I would've been ecstatic if my dorm room was anywhere near this nice. Nevertheless, they did a great job. The turn out looks great.

My room bigger but doesn't even comes close to this well I hit puberty my height went from kid to as tall as my father so my bed is short for me now I search and this came up nice to meet u

Nice, but not good to have things over the head of the bed- especially heavy things or things that can fall. How many times will the student hit their head on that shelf? Can the bed scoot to the other wall? If not, put a bookcase (attach wheels or slidey thingies) between the other wall & the bed- backwards. Flat end is the headboard. Store seldom-used things on the shelves. To obtain the stored items, roll or slide the bookcase out & in. Thank you.
I think that's why the student initially put their pillow the opposite side. Great observation !

It looks so serene. Good advice to not fight the color scheme. They really toned down the garish color and made it look attractive. I wish I could live there. Great decorating job!

I would have placed the desk under the shelves and moved the bed over to where the desk was. Otherwise nice makeover.

i would have moved the desk and chair to the other side of the room by the window, put the desk under the wall cubbies/shelf thing and centered the bed with a bigger headboard in the space where they left the desk. That way the risk of hitting your head on that shelf thing is less probable.
I love this. I think having a cozy room would entice everybody to stay in (and actually study) instead of feeling suffocated/bored which usually will lead people to leave the room 😍

The small, round table next to the reading chair could be a small, round storage piece that doubles as a table/extra seating. A pop or two of color would be nice.
That was actually a really nice and big dorm room to start with, are they honestly allowed to take furniture out and change the curtains?!
I think if you kept everything and changed it back when you left, it wouldn't be a problem
We weren't allowed to change our curtains due to fire hazards and found decorating painted breeze block walls in first year quite hard as only bluetack or those sticky hooks were really allowed. That room had lovely furniture to start off with, but I cannot see many universities in the UK allowing students to rid themselves of furniture.

The problem with the bookcases over the headboard is the person will not be able to lean back on the headboard due to not enough room for their torso, and will hit their head getting up in the morning. I might have tried the desk under the window and made the bed a daybed on the long wall with bolsters on the wall side, if it would fit.

It's so good!!! The sorcery they call interior decorating must be taught @ Hogwarts bc I could've never come up with anything so genius!! Clearly the university couldn't either. I did like the painted dorm furniture. That gave them a starting point.
