Nose:
Sweet toffee, strong vanilla, aromatic rum, fruit
Taste:
Strong rum, cocoa, little bitterness, oak

Medium

I recently picked up a bottle. It is still very smooth compared to many varieties of Scotch whiskey, and I quite enjoy the subtle (to me) rum flavors.
This is definitely up my alley. I have to get my hands on this.
My friend bought a bottle of Balvenie 14J Caribbean cask recently. We will be trying out the 'unique' taste of rum in a whisky next week. Looking forward to the experience.

This whisky is my new favourite. Despite %43 abv, it's pretty smooth and it has layer of different tastes. I also liked the sweet finish.
Finally pours the amber fluid at 6:25 mark. I can read the label myself. But I do value your opinion on the taste. Thank you.
Love your reviews Horst! They inspired me to get a nosing glass to truly enjoy my whisky. You should take great pride from the fact that you are a German educating a Scotsman about whisky! As a side note, in Scotland we sometimes dilute our whisky with Irn Bru, for a more Scottish slant on a whisky and cola. (Don't waste good single malts trying this though, its reserved for blended whisky's only!)

Funny but rum, good rum mind you, is my favorite beverage and I absolutely loved this whisky. Still love watching your reviews. I agree with comment below: "It still disturbs me" made me laugh out loud, so thank you for that Horst.
Had a flight the other day. This was one that I really enjoyed sampling.
where did you go to?
I don't like rum either, but this is a very pleasant Scotch. To me, it is a bit more oaky than what Horst describes.

6 months ago I would have been on board with this review. However, I no longer share Horst's distaste for rum, having sampled several excellent examples.
Horst never drank Jamaican rum punch with me in Port Antonio with me and some local beauties...
I love The Balvenie 15 single barrel before they switched to sherry ....

Which Balvenie would be more friendly for a beginner, this or the 15 year sherry cask? Or maybe the 12 year double barrel?
I'm a beginner and the 12 year double barrel was awesome. I haven't tried the 15 year sherry cask.

Also not a fan of rum...but my pallet is not as keen as yours Horst...this is my absolute favorite scotch. I cannot taste rum at all. I love all of the Balvenie's. I even have a bottle of 21 that my wife got me for my 50th bay. I think the 14 is the most mellow, easy sipping of all Balvenie's.

There are SO MANY good rums, some arguably better than whiskys. Maybe you have not tried enough? Have you tried Ron Millionario XO? It's one of the best, if you don't like it, you don't like rum.
Jeremy Hevey The problem with rum is the sugary taste of molasses. If you don't like this taste, then rum will never be your drink. If you don't like grapes you won't like wine and if you don't like hops then you will never fully enjoy beer. I hope you enjoy your rum and I will certainly enjoy the whisky.

I find it extremely hard to believe that all these whiskey reviewers really taste what they say the taste. I dunno.
Why? Once you start nosing them your senses open up more and more and you start noticing (or being able to name) many aromas. Spend a few weeks nosing scotch and you’ll see. You’ll need a decent glass and take your time.
This guys does some great review but, this review he needs to redo. He’s way off on this one !

@@macksloon3729 it's the flavours imparted by the rum cask. I'm not a huge rum fan. I prefer sherry or bourbon casks. If you like rum you may like it.
@@phantom7986 I dont mind rum, but aside from that.. is it a rich, full, "quality" made whisky in your opinion?
@@macksloon3729 I think the description in this video is accurate and being Balvenie I think it will be made to high standards but I couldn't get past the flavour. If you can, get a sample (Master of Malt do them).
