    The reason the US version of WILTY failed, they left out the humour, and made it all about winning.

      I hope you are not virtue signalling, mpn ami.
      The REAL reason having watched it , was that they were sooo intent of every Nationality and age and gender being represented that ,as you say, replaced any humour so they ticked all the boxes but, you are right,is was poor..

      Yeh heard it said a lot of times that the UK panel shows don't work in the US as they get too competitive, where here in the UK they don't care about points/winning.

    Actually there is a university in Bradford (my brother and sister-in-law met there), but it was only a red herring for his story. Adil Ray created and stars in the sitcom _Citizen Khan_ , in which he plays the central character, who is evidently a satirical pastiche of his own dad. It's caused some controversy about stereotypical characterisations of British Pakistanis, but Adil is surely in a position to know from first hand without treading on the toes of other people's differing experience.

    • @MrNikolidas
      @MrNikolidas Місяць тому

      The fear was, and to an extent still is, that minority groups satirising themselves unfortunately gives more fuel to the small sliver of bigots and racists. In my view, it was not so much controversy, but well-intended concern. For what it’s worth, I really enjoyed Citizen Khan. I learned how to greet in Arabic from it, and still use it to this day with my Muslim friends. For all the negative stereotypes it purportedly reinforced, there was a significant cultural exchange to be learned from if one was so inclined.

    • @leohickey4953
      @leohickey4953 Місяць тому

      @@MrNikolidas Yes, Jonathan, I'm sure you're right. Regardless of intentions, certain strands of comedy can give source material to bullies. I'm old enough to recall _It Ain't Half Hot Mum_ , which I don't expect to see repeated any time soon. To me it was a satire on the British Raj with a few crude gags thrown in, but kids from a south Asian background no doubt hated comparisons made to Rangi Ram, punkah wallahs, chai wallahs, etc. at school.

    In the UK, it's panel show. Reason being: it's not about the game, it's about the comedians on them, and filling air time. If they don't make you laugh, they don't last long. :D And have your fun! I do the same thing. 😅
    ETA: If you haven't seen Bob Mortimer: local legend from the WILTY channel posted about a month ago, OMG, do--even if it's just for yourself and Queen B (it's 51 minutes all up, and worth every second). The man is a storytelling god. It also gives context for why Savid Mitchell is so confused by the man. :D

    6:27 this here i why when these sorts of shows are attempted in america they fail. there's a level of caring about "winning" that they get right here. they try a bit to win but not much and the real winning is having the best laugh possible with each other. that the other thing - with not against each other. that's not a big competition either. if you can set someone else up for a big joke that just as good as making the big joke yourself. the american attempts were blighted by too much competitiveness and not enough fun.
