Thank you for pulling out a few all time favorite Lps also in my house; I agree brilliant as they are, few of them received recognition of their influence.literally nearly all of them: cabaret voltaire, TG, Wire, early Christian Death, TUXEDOMOON, Coil, Tones on Tail, and all the rest !
"'Are you saying things were really that bad Dereck?' Well they probably werent, but it sure felt like it." That I think really describes how many of us who suffer from anxiety or depression reflect on those times when we were really deep into the darker parts of ourselves. During those times the black cloud that hangs over our heads is all we see because it veils everything that there is until it finally fades away. Awesome videos dude!
Magazine, teardrop explodes, the wake, fra lippo lippi, chrome, wire, bunnymen..great selection!!! Deux Filles, Minny Pops, Shiny Gnomes..i didn't knew this, thanks x the mentions!!!
Had to click on this because of the Foetus album. Re-bought a used original Japanese import of it recently here in Korea ! Love every album on this video, got many of them when they came out. A few I've never heard of (surprisingly). This music influenced who I am.
I hear what you're saying. I went through a religious period at the end of the 80's where I felt I needed to completely break from the past, shake off all the darkness, and make a serious attempt at living again. I either sold everything I had (music in all formats) or threw it away (books on eastern philosophy). I further compounded this by getting married. It did feel liberating for a while, and it definitely ushered in a new stage in my life, but it was not meant to last. Now although I've been recollecting stuff for years now, I realize that there are some things I will never get back. We should always beware of anything or anyone who seeks to separate us from what we love.
Obviously you're all dialed in on this stuff so I shouldn't be suprized, but thanks for mentioning Foetus, especially "Hole" which has a special place in my heart...But seriously, "Nail" is best and also has a special place...oh forget it.
Duuude, so glad I found you, I love it, you have great taste! You’re inspiring me to do the same, I’m a 26 year old woman, I gave away all my vinyl because I travel so much but I have a portable speaker that sounds like vinyl to me - it’d be cool to make this music geek stuff accessible to people who can’t collect records anymore Bauhaus are one of my favourite bands - you would probably like Cabaret Nocturne if you don’t know them - check out ‘blood walk’
What a great collection! Post-Punk is one of my favorite time periods so I really appreciated this video. Many of the records you discuss I had never heard of, so I'm going to go look them up! Thanks!
I really enjoyed watching this and you have great, great taste in music. Thanks for promoting some of the best of the best obscure post-punk bands out there.
Cheers Dereck, I'll be sure to be checking out this channel from now on. What you're doing is pure gold. I saw Mark's Chameleons Vox last year having missed them back in the day. Loved every second of it.
Nice shout-out for the oeuvre of 4AD - can you do one about everything released by Creation Records? They provided the soundtrack to my youth in the 80s.
Thank you so much for sharing your collection with us. I didn't know much of any of these bands except for the throbbing gristle. Fantastic pics buddy. Thanks
That is an incredible record collection good sir, and you get mad props for showing Throbbing Gristle, This Heat, and Cabaret Voltaire. I just discovered your channel through your videos on Swans, and I'm really enjoying what I'm seeing. Keep up the good work and keep making videos!
I have so much to learn, and for people like you so much to thank... some day hope I have the wisdom you have and follow that amazing teaching example of yours. Gracias maestro
wow man, this is great, always been a big fan of post-punk.Your collection breathtaking.I'm from belgium, and there is (was) a postpunkscene (coldwave) here to. Check out some belgium postpunkbands, RED ZEBRA- SIGLO XX- NACHT UND NEBEL- AROMA DI AMORE -
SIGLO XX is more what we use to call Hard Beat, héhé !!! It's later New Beat (9o's) that sounds more like EBM and maybe also thee influence ov techno which turned it harder. I'm belgian too _[Mons, but I lived nearly 1o years in BXL-Zo0 where we made free-parties and my friends still continue with ALGK 6Tem]._ We're very close to Enjoy Apocalypse but it's founder who's a very good friend is now in a safer country and also left all those parties. ... You know all those parties are just places where only thee Entities ov Astral Plane are winning something : thee predation ov fucked up people's energies. Free-parties have a Magickal potential. But people whith Occult Sciences Knowlege(s) should turn it to real Ritual(s) and it means to make things in a way you know what it will happen or at least what it should happen !!! Héhé !!! Cuz' we have total authority on Astral Entity but they don't use it. And not especially to _''control''_ Astral Entities but more as a collaboration with much Respect and Comprehension. No Judgement cuz' an Entity tell me they don't want anything bad or good for us. They're just like that and it's their only way to survive so they do it.
Again, another great video with a lot of new bands for me to discover. I can't even tell you how many bids I have on ebay right now based off your other videos lol. Thank Dereck and keep it coming!
All very good stuff! Dome is amazing. I recommend C Cat Trance, very interesting mix of post punk and world music. I am not going to say "underrated" because it doesn't mean anything really, but I never met anybody who liked them.
Hey man! I watched this video ages ago and checked out Minny Pops afterward, and now they're one of my all time favorite bands! Just got an original pressing of their first record, which is an album that has inspired me musically as well! Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing lesser-known records. :)
Hi Dereck, great stuff! I totally agree in most of your choices. I´ve bought a Digital Sex compilation some years ago via your myspace page. Absolutely brilliant! Greetings from Barcelona.
This is some of the greatest insight into a very cool record collection. I'm totally subscribing. I recently started listening to The Gun Club, The Wedding Present, and other assorted post punk 80's stuff and after watching this I can't wait to look up all these new bands.
I became a teenager in '77, and many of those records was the soundtrack of my youth! Loved that Magazine record, superloved the Chrome's "Half machine.." and Wire was totally my fave band along with PIL (metal box was huge!)
I'm glad you've recovered from your 'religious thing' and got back into great if challenging music. I also love Wire and wish more people got them. They have always been very influential to me and many other musicians I've known.
Love your videos man. You are the epitome in having a wide range of tastes... I remember you were one of the first to check my Manfred Schoof uploads.... Take care!
What a great list. Brings back great memories. I live in Hawaii and many people here are either only into island music, pop music (particularly the cheesy one hit wonder songs) some classic rock or gangsta rap. It is very rare for me to meet someone who has an eclectic taste in music. It is refreshing to listen to Dereck's knowledge of various musicians from so many genres. And he is not pretentious about it.
Thanks so much for this video, I've been meaning to delve deeper into post-punk and this helps. You've got yourself a new subscriber! Also, Unknown Pleasures is one of my favorites, first heard it 10 years ago at the age of 13 and it was by far the most inspiring record of my young life.
Great Video. I've recently been getting deeper into "post-punk" music (The Cocteu Twins already being one of my favorites) and this video was a great help. You have very good taste Thanks for sharing
Good pics! I have 6 of your pics as well. This is the music I listened to as a teen in the early 80's in Detroit on WLBS out of Mt. Clemens MI. I also just happen to be a Black man as well but I refuse to part with my Post Punk slash New Wave.
Please, please, PLEASE don't take this as offensive. I stumbled across this video via a posting on Facebook by a friend. I was amazed at seeing a middle-aged, black dude from America sharing the music I love and have grown up with. Utter respect to you. Wire indeed do rock. I salute you!
Just came across your video and I have to say, this is one of the coolest videos I have ever run into on UA-cam. You have earned another subscription. Nod in your direction.
Wonderfull video. I love postpunk and have made a (2 part) video myself a couple of months ago. I have a nice bunch of Postpunk in my collection and you've shown records I still would love to find!
I loved watching this. You obviously know and have a deep appreciation for post-punk and its satellite genres, which, of course, was and is as relevant today as it was three decades ago. I was curious to know what your impression of the so-called revival bands today is. Personally, I find most a bit too mainstream to really be considered a second wave of post-punk, but there aren't many bands more true to the roots. I'd like to think my band, The Liar Script, holds to that musical tradition.
I love Magazine. Secondhand Daylight is a masterpiece, yet they get little love today. I have it in vinyl. Wire is great too. I had Pink Flag on vinyl but someone walked away with it
LOL I got Television and Magazine mixed up the other week and purchased the No Thyself CD. It's not my usual taste but I've given it a chance. What do you think of it?
Hi Dereck, I really love what you do with your videos; you're always positive and have a great breadth of knowledge that I appreciate so much. I've been collecting for 30 years and have many of the same albums you have which is cool to see. I'd never seen this video and just got around to watching it today which leads me to a question: in this video you say your religious experience saw you selling off things like Throbbing Gristle and Wire...what was your thinking there? Was it gospel music or no music at that time? I can't imagine selling my Wire collection under any circumstances, ha! Love ya, man.
Great video. You should check out the band "The Sound" and "The Opposition." Partially their early albums. Would you mind listing some of the records you touched on in the description box?
Nice video, you surely have an awesome music collection, i always think that the post-punk era is one of the most underrated in the history of mankind's music, and that's sad cause it gave us a lot of talented artists and bands.
Again, you're blowing me away with your vast knowledge. Do you have a music blog anywhere online? I'd love to read in-depth reviews on records you like. Have you ever considered writing a book about artists, genres and the continuing evolution of music, societal influence that created a sound and how that sound went to influence a society and how this cycle continues. and the negative side of trying to capitalize off of an art. the future of music after mp3s. I'd buy a copy in a heartbeat!
Dereck, I'm enjoying your videos but I have one criticism... instead of letting some random album play in the background while showing off your collection, you should do what Amoeba Records does with their 'What's In My Bag' series and play a snippet from each album you present. I know, this takes some video editing on your part but I would be more than glad to help you!
@surj33t Thank you so much. I used to write record reviews ages ago for an early indie music magazine out of Portland called Option. I have a blog but it's more rambling stuff. Now that I've started this I'm thinking of this as being the platform I enjoy best, talking about things. I have contemplated writing a book though, good call.
Man I'm with MRHOFFAME, I would love to hang with you sometime & talk music/records & of course sift through that beautiful collection you have.. Great stuff as always, thanks for sharing.. And yeah I've been wanting to find a copy of that Magazine lp for a while now. That FRA LIPPO LIPPI sounds really interesting.. And yeah I would love to see your punk collection.. And yes it's all about Prince.. I'm a HUGE Prince fan.I don't think most people really understand how talented that guy really is.

Yes well said. I understand that odd reflective element on acute anxiety too. Nuff said.
Nice music show . New music in bandcamp from Dereck , I see- and sounds excellent 👌

I really enjoyed watching this and you have great, great taste in music. Thanks for promoting some of the best of the best obscure post-punk bands out there.
Keep watching. I've performed with Mark Burgess.

Yes, 'Magazine' please! One of THE most underrated bands ever IMO.
I love this guy. I learn so much and he is always spot on.
This is the most cultivated selection of vinyls I have seen in years. Excellent taste.
Again, another great video with a lot of new bands for me to discover. I can't even tell you how many bids I have on ebay right now based off your other videos lol. Thank Dereck and keep it coming!
Is this really from 2011 , if so this must make you part of the earliest reviewers that I have personally seen. Cool. Peace

My favorite time period and favorite bands also, what I don't like it's the prices of some of these records.

Thank you I love Joe Meek's work.
Awesome collection!
Great to see that mid-period Wire album in there. A lot has been said about the first three albums, but the more "commercial" 80s stuff was fabulous.
Great video. You should check out the band "The Sound" and "The Opposition." Partially their early albums. Would you mind listing some of the records you touched on in the description box?
I love Vini Reilly's guitar textures.
Cool video! Thanks for inviting us into your space and sharing your favourite records with us.

I'm into post punk music. people like me are kinda rare. hardly see any more people are into that kind of music. I do love 80s new year, darkwave
Doing quite well thank you.
this was really cool, thanks
@MLJK21 Thank you for the compliment. It's all down to what comes through the ears.

The man' in this video's knowledge of and enthusiasm for great post punk albums is immense,I think a vinyl spending spree for me.beckons.
I remember B Movie.
im a big fan of Wire and Magazine. Ian Curtis left us to soon, but atleast we had the birth of New Order out of the death of Joy division. I'd have to put Echo and the Bunnymen in my top 5 list, even Ian McCulluch's solo stuff is great, his version of leonard cohen's Lover Lover Lover is every bit as good as the original. @stephan73 I will take the time to look at your videos related to this period. Nice to hear from you.
