    Replacing this old beast of a toilet was the right thing to do in this case. One cool trick you can use for these if the customer doesnt have the money for a new toilet is to clear the siphon jet with a zip tie and then further open it with a hacksaw blade. You can clean the jets around the toilet bowl by pouring icemaker cleaner down the refill tube. Awesome video as usual steve!

    I bought my condo new in 1986. The toilets used in the building were the Crane Galaxy. Many of them had bad castings. My next door neighbor had the same model with a long crack in the back of the tank (fortunately they replaced it before it leaked). My upstairs toilet flushed exactly like the one you replaced in this video. It also overflowed twice. The builder would not fix the problem, so I replaced the toilet myself. I'll bet your customer likes the new Gerber.

    I usually find plunging the water level down a bit and then using a drywall screw to clear the limescale out of the holes under the rim makes a hell of a difference to a bad flusher.

    Ah yes the toilet paper test ! Yep she is a slow mover ! However this can be fixed easily by de-scaling the inside of the toilet bowl ring with muriatic acid. I have restored dozens of toilets thus saving customers the expense of a new crapper ! 🙏

    Pretty simple job! I've seen a toilet flush like that before. It wasn't clogged but the tank and the water ways in the bowl were full of rust! If it were my own toilet I would probably go to the trouble to clean it but I'm sure it doesn't pay for you to spend the time to dink with things like that and I get that. Is that a General Wire auger or a Rigid? Do you have a preference?

    I moved into a resale house where young boys used to live. The boys toilet had a sluggish flush. I snaked it and no improvement. Pulled toilet to look for problems in pipe and up the siphon. Found nothing. Felt around inside the siphon from the bowl side and felt something uneven. Used a small mirror to look up bowl side of siphon and saw partial blockage. Apparently, a child had flushed a blue plastic poker chip. Somehow the chip remained in the siphon area for a long time, and eventually was plastered to the siphon wall with what looked like crap. Feature that. Scraped the poker chip off wall and scrubbed crap free. Flushed like a champ after that. (I'm a homeowner, so my time is not as valuable as a plumber's.) In my current home I had a toilet that had debris stuck behind the siphon jet. Toilet flush was weird: one good flush, followed by half-assed, over and over. Stuck my finger in jet and could see and feel a thin milky white plastic disc. I could feel it, but it wouldn't fit thru jet. Removed tank, pulled bowl, and carried to back yard to lay on it's side and flush from jet towards tank. Two small disk that looked like some kind of "knock-out" floated from the tank attachment point. I wonder if a kid had thrown them in the tank, or if they were part of some deoderizer crystal package. The two plastic disc were just smaller than a quarter and had no hole in them like a washer would.

    Jet might have been obstructed with calcium from urine. It happens more when people don't flush after having a piss. Sometimes they can be freed up with de-limer but many of the chemicals out there to de-lime don't do a good enough job. By the time you run out to the store and get de-limer, then mess around for an hour trying to get it running right and that might not even work, you might as well get a new one. 2 hours of your time pays for a new toilette anyway.

    Hey Steve! I wanna ask - What do you think about Kohler Cimarron toilet? I think that Cimarron toilet is the worst of kohler products, because it uses so little water that (I think) the waste just splash into the pipe and there is no water push the waste out of a pipe to a sewer line, so with kohler cimarron toilet you will clog your pipes very quickly, right? Correct me if I'm wrong :)

    • @stevenlavimoniere
      @stevenlavimoniere  9 років тому

      Chris Troxtell some toilets are just bad flushers .if there is a defect in the trap way ,,,what kind of wax are you using ?? is it the one with the horn ,if so maybe its affecting the flush .i would check the water level .and replace the wax with a regular not fullel type.than try it .before you put the toilet bad run a hose down the drain and see it backs up at all .. you might have a drain problem .. the water should never back up at all in the drain..

    • @MrCt333
      @MrCt333 9 років тому

      steven lavimoniere
      I'm not honestly sure, I've never pulled it out, I think this toilet is just a poor flusher. I just know I usually have to snake it to get it unclogged more often then I would like. My 2nd bathroom has more room so it has a deeper bowl (elongated I think) as to the one in my master bath, the door barely misses the toilet bowl so they couldn't use the same toilet when they built the house.

    • @stevenlavimoniere

      Looking at the old stain patterns under the toilet at 5:02 you see one reason the 2012 International Plumbing Code calls for sealant around the junction of the base of the toilet bowl and the floor covering. This helps in day to day sanitation. The crud on the bathroom floor doesn't accumulate and stay trapped under the edge of the toilet bowl base. An unintended consequence is that minor moisture accumulation under the toilet stays under there and can rot the sub-floor OSB (or whatever) and a failure of the wax ring will not be known as soon as the leak starts.
