Marty tells a very different story in his book ("I Must Say") about how the 2-man show started. He wrote that when his wife died (they'd been together for a long time, and the 2 couples had vacationed together for years), Steve felt that Marty had been moping around long enough and needed to work, so Steve came up with the idea of the 2-man show and bulldozed Marty into doing it, to cheer him up. According to Marty's book, Steve sacrificed some big movie money (his film career was hot at the time), in order to help his friend get over his grief. But I guess that would have been a downer of a story to tell Conan.
In the 1989 movie ‘Parenthood’, Steve Martin’s character Gil is supposed to be 35. (At the time of release, he was actually 44). He did however look 57.
there's many funny people but a true comedic duo like Martin and Lewis or Abbott and Costello is something the world will never have enough of. Conan and Andy or Dave and Paul are funny together but it's very clearly a comic and sidekick dynamic as opposed to Steve and Marty who are both stars in their own rights
I listened to the podcast yesterday but like others, I could listen to anything that has Steve Martin Short any time. Dana Carvey came up with this new name for them on his podcast. But MAN Martin Short is a genius for burns/insults. How does he just get them so fast even at his age. Wow, that's amazing!!
It is a shame they couldn't have done a follow up to the Three Amigos. Could have been hilarious... of course there is the third required person who is notoriously bad to work with. Also, the genius behind the movie was murdered by his wife. Without his involvement, it couldn't have been the same. These two were the true stars of this movie though... their interaction when he gets shot by El Guapo, singing my little buttercup, etc. Chevy Chase was in the background when these two were on.
They are delightful. It’s satisfying to watch Steve Martin Short laugh. I bet as a comedian that is the best thing in the world to make comedic legends laugh.
I was born Feb 1979 and Three Amigos is one of the first movies I really clearly remember seeing in the theater. There are several others that also came out in late 1986 that I remember seeing. Star Trek IV, Little Shop of Horrors. And I just always assumed Three Amigos was a big hit because my little sister and parents and I loved it and always quoted it and tons of kids all through high school and college quoted it. Guess it was just more of a VHS thing and now that we are old it's getting more respect
Fully agree. But I have to ask ... Am I the only man that greatly wishes Steve Martin would at some point randomly just bust out with, "HE HATES THESE CANS!", at every appearance he does everywhere?
Not that you asked 😜 but for me I was around 11 years old and Three Amigos had just come out 😂😂😂 . Still in my top 5 faves and my 22 year old son loves it as well.
I went to a kid's birthday party at the movie theater ! When I got there Johnny handed us all tickets to Sgt.Bilko.... great party Johnny real nice surprise
The first time I wore the shorts I realized my mistake. Then I realized it was time to wear the shorts all the time! LOL! Three of the funniest people to ever assist me in life right there! :)
"Andy who?" Oof. I felt that on Andy's behalf. Conan filled him in but it was clear Marty knew who Conan was talking about and was about to tell Steve.
So happy to have these guys available and productive so far into their careers. Not that they're near the end, but, best to get the good material out there while they can.
Steve Martin obviously not someone who watched Conan at any point over the past 30 years. Andy, if you're reading this, don't take it personally. The fault is his not yours. You're a @#$%& genius.
Steve Martin made one of the most underrated movies ever. The worst it must have taken to write and splice everything together is difficult to comprehend. That movie is “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid.” The movie is absolute genius. Pure Gold. He deserved multiple Awards for that priceless gem.
i wish Conan would have let Steve describe when they met. He always makes things about him not his guests. And the headline says Steve martin remembers the first time he met Conan!! GEEEEEZ
Well the title of the clip you described honours Steve Martin as the senior talent, so clearly Conan & his team revere him. His name is mentioned first. Conan describes being awe struck and intimidated by meeting Martin. I do hate it when interviewers overstep the mark but here you've got 3 comedians reminiscing and interrupting one another is inevitable.
Is Andy a diva behind the scenes or something? Steve is the 4th comedian I've seen throw shade at the guy, why do so many people seem to openly show disdain for him? Reminds me of Carrot Top

it's certainly possible that both stories are true. perhaps the interview piece was just a catalyst to them seeing that people loved their chemistry
Lorne Michaels and Conan O'Brian taking a walk and spontaneously knocking on Steve Martin's door blows my mind

Steve Martin has looked 57 years old for the past thirty years.

They're the best. Very few people on this planet are naturally funny like them.
Steve's comedic timing is second to none. Lol
It's pretty clear he's not a very nice person. Very lucky to have Martin Short take him by the hand...
