No kidding, when I first saw this I was completely amazed by it. It reminded me of the golden years of animation where it was treated as an artpiece, not a product.
Some movies with 10 times the budget tends to recast often... Especially later Disney live-action movies with even 30-40 times this budget. And what'd ya know? When a movie suddenly costs 300-400 million, you shouldn't be surprised if you don't earn anything back from it. That's the fault of having such insanely high budgets. Disney could definitely learn a thing or two from these guys, that's for sure.
I believe the budget is so large due to their bloated crew, they have a bunch of people doing useless jobs or doing jobs in that could be done with a much smaller group of people or could otherwise be done more effectively. The 3D animation actually looks really good. It can be pretty challenging to transition 2D to 3D animation, especially for anime. However, this movie did it really well.
