    The sheer irony of the project lead for this game desperately trying to prevent it from being "outdated" all the while ensuring it would be outdated when it finally came out. For a 2001 game, this is fairly advanced even in a clearly unfinished state. Every game developer knows you eventually have to bite the bullet and work to finish a title or else you'll succumb to feature creep. DNF and Diakatana are testaments to that.

    • @stalwartarjuna
      @stalwartarjuna 2 роки тому +78

      The late 90s to early 00s was a very competitive and bumpy transitional period of non-stop breakthroughs in the hardware AND software departments. No doubt very stressful for game devs trying to keep up. You would start developing a video game one day, by the next quarter most, if not all, the tech you were using was already outdated. On top of that, you had consoles like the PS2 and the Xbox entering the market in full force.

      @@stalwartarjuna And in that time we had multiple new Duke games not made by 3D Realms that were still pretty decent. N Space made 2 for PS1 and Eurocom made one for N64. This game was just a bit to ambitions and unfocused. They should of fleshed out level layouts first instead of focusing on so many little things. Also get a lot of the systems working. This build is very good though. They could of just of heavily overhauled the engine. Implemented new features and graphical effects instead of scraping it.

    • @quietnumber2317
      @quietnumber2317 2 роки тому +29

      @@stalwartarjuna Of course. Technology moved incredibly fast then and Duke Nukem Forever being a heavily anticipated game would obviously result in pressure to deliver. However, technology was never what was important. Duke Nukem 3D was not successful because it had the most advanced technology. Half-Life was considered a watershed moment despite still using a modified Quake engine. Both games were beloved for their impeccable design and cinematic qualities. Restarting development every two years to adopt whatever shiny new engine came out is always a fools gamble.

      @@quietnumber2317 Definitely! I'd of just added it all to the Duke Nukem Forever 2011 release in the extras menu if possible and sell it as such. Like a finished game and then the unfinished Duke 2001 build and the 2004 build. You'd need to do a bit of work to get that all working though. I don't think they could of pulled it off. But what did come out was more than possible to finish and release. Not that it felt finished though. The finished game was the 2006 build I'm pretty sure? And yeah! "don't you enjoy watching Behind The Scenes of movies"
      Not particularly I think.
      "Same with games"
      The only old and unfinished game builds I care about are from retro games, because the whole development process was usually much more closed off than it is now. But even then I think people make a bigger deal out of it than it is (see restoration projects). Because of course the first versions of a game look entirely different. It's to be expected.
      I don't know if you are aware, but the entire industry (except Nintendo) essentially shares information about a game's development process (especially the technical part) at GDC for example. The development process of a game is not shrouded in mystery anymore. It's just a job at this point, because you need to keep up with what's happening.
      To clarify:
      I understand if the game you got in the end is something entirely different.
      But I often see people go apeshit about some old build of a game where it's like "In this build Spumgabio does a backwards flip when jumping instead of a forward flip! :O"

    A few notes:
    In order to get through some parts of the prototype, you have to interact with some NPCs by pressing E, each time you press E it will advance a line of dialog, after talking to them they might open a door or do something else. Killing an NPC will break a scripted sequence and you will usually have to restart the entire map.
    Most of the maps in the first half of the game are connected, albiet kinda loosely, I couldn't find a way to get from Studio to Penthouse A in The Lady Killer but there might be a way. The level design is a bit wonky, so expect to get lost alot.
    In Penthouse A there is a puzzle in the room that the maid is trying to open, completing the puzzle puts out the fire, allowing you to progress.
    Penthouse B and Rooftop are also connected, but in the strangest way. The end of Penthouse B has an elevator that appears by flipping a switch on a balcony, the elevator's controls are a bit weird and I don't quite remember them, but I think it's the arrow keys and maybe page up and down. After going up, and going onto the rooftop, you will find that the roof is loading and unloading in several chunks, but if you look around for a bit you should find a trapdoor, going in there loads you into Rooftop.
    This 2001 build doesn't have many of its own commands, however it's engine is a modified Unreal Engine 1, and the vast majority of commands from there work here.
    A few cool development facts about DNF 2001:
    The prototype leaked is actually around the time of the E3 trailer. It even includes all of the maps shown in the trailer, some of which were made specifically for it. The trailer really overrepresented how playable the game really was.
    This prototype is actually quite early as it goes for the "2001" era of development. Development actually lasted about a year longer, into Late 2002, before they had the idea of updating the lighting engine, it broke the lighting on existing maps, and from what it seems they just gave up and restarted development.
    The Duke 3D model seen in this proto is a placeholder, and a little while after they updated the model, complete with sunglasses.
    I'm unsure as to how complete Duke Nukem Forever got, but if I were to take a guess, This build is alittle less than half complete, with most of the groundwork laid out, and the Late 2002 build was about 80-90% complete
    Development was restared about 5 times, the first 2 or 3 times using different engines. I think the Quake 1 or 2 engine was used at one point before they tried restarted development again.
    Duke Nukem Forever was originally going to be another sidescroller, releasing after Duke Nukem 3D before it was cancelled.

Even while I'm almost 22, I'm still a sucker for Rare's N64 collect-a-thon platformers, even the ones that people started to see problems with, like Banjo-Tooie and Donkey Kong 64. And still like, to finally end up playing the one unreleased game that probably would've diverged our reality the most, would just be the coolest thing, even above Dinosaur Planet.
    Even still, every time we get something big like the Nintendo Gigaleak, Puggsy on SNES, this recent Duke Nukem Forever leak, Dinosaur Planet as aforementioned, and heck, even Carnivalé on N64, I still celebrate as, though my levels of desirability for them all vary between each other, they're all still interesting/important pieces of video game history in their own unique ways.

      Except that Postal 4 has none of 2's topical humor, great level design, coherent art style or even technical stability, lmao.
      It's also pretty telling that you boil Douk down to just "muh sexism and jokes", much like you did Postal 2 to "piss humor": I guess when you only bring up the surface level features of older things (in Douk's case noboby seems to remember the stellar level design, interactivity, the banging ost and such) we end up getting trash like Postal 4: sure it's got cat silencers and rEfErEnCeS11! but it's just plain unfun.
      I mean nowadays that's applicable to way too much media than anyone's willing to admit, but this line of thinking is partially why not getting a new Douk game is a blessing: it would just be another shallow, surface level nostalgia pandering skinwalker with little of what made the original great. What Vinny describe, on making duke come back, keeping his humour, with a touch of irony and making fun of him while also keeping him as the hero of the story doing what has to be done, that's actually kind of how I imagined it myself trying to think of how to bring him back, he's a bit older, he's a relique of the past, no one takes him seriously, he himself is way out of touch and unpopular as a result, then the main antagonist arrives, everything explodes and all, then Duke decides not to save the world, because fuck these ungrateful people, and new heros, who are more loved an more of the time fall one by one, because they're not Duke, so Duke decides that he, infact, will do it, because the other guys fucking suck and keep dying, and he succeeds, because he is Duke Nukem, and from that point on, yyou can give him a character ark, and keep the parts of him that makes it him, which wouldn't be easy, but it wouldn't be the first time an ancient finctional character gets organically updated. Just need good writers.

    Sad how this was so close to completion, only for the head of the development to look at that damn Doom 3 showcase and being so determined they MUST have that modern light system in their game. Messing up the entire development all over again because of that.

    While I am glad that people enjoy 'Half-Life', it's a major shame that 'Half-Life' overshadowed 'SiN', because 'SiN' did SO much more in terms of immersion and having a living world of sorts. Yeah, I know it had cutscenes that weren't solely in first person to progress the story, but the interactivity of the world felt a lot better than anything in 'Half-Life', the voice actors did a better job (and were more varied), guns and combat felt better and were more punchy/gory, and I vastly preferred the action movie-like story to Half-Life's much more basic story. And honestly, I prefer 'Opposing Force' to the base game any day as well.

      What is SiN?

    • @ThierryWilliamson
      @ThierryWilliamson 2 роки тому

      @@SimpleSaemple It's a REALLY fun FPS game with some immersive sim elements that came out just a COUPLE weeks before 'Half-Life'. It's basically a big 80's sci-fi action movie you can play, with an over the top gore system, likable, memorable characters, and a really impressive interconnected linear world that SORT of reminds me of 'Deus Ex'.
      It sadly got overshadowed by 'Half-Life', partially due to it iirc having a few problems on launch in terms of performance, but it's an AMAZINGLY fun game that I personally feel holds up a fair bit better than 'Half-Life' in both replay value, and just fun value overall.
      It's uber easy to run, well paced, cheap, and as far as I know getting a remaster soon that will make it EVEN EASIER to play. I fully recommend it!

      Accursed farms had a video on SIN where he managed to contact the person responible for the music and got high quality files from him for the original SIN if you are interested you might still find those.
      Big issue is that the setting half life choose was fundamentally better then SIN and was also taking itself serious which makes bad voice acting even seem normal compared to SIN where its definetly meant as comedy where the bad guys laugh at how bad they are and the evil endboss lady has ridiclous chest physics, yet the game wants you to shoot the right body parts else you do no damage while blasting you with hype industrial tracks. It feels like SIN didnt know what it wanted to be and once it figured it out in the sequel not even the teens it was targeted for cared for it.
      Ross also has a ton of issues he points out on the video where the Audio files are.

    Is there a way to fix the "Debug Assertion Failed" error that prevents it running on some PCs? I get this bug so I can't play it and it seems to be luck of the draw if it occurs on a given machine or not from what I read about it. This is after following the installation/patching instructions to the letter i might add. EDIT: Fixed it. I just needed to disable DEP on the game executable. I’ve had to do that with games before but it didn’t occur to me this time.

    To be fair, I wouldn't say it was that outdated by 2001 standards. If you compare it to HL2 several years later, then yes. But if you compare it to its contemporaries like NOLF or Serious Sam, it would've been a perfect fit. A demo of this on PcGamer (if they had the balls to handle it) probably would've met rave reviews

    You can access the dev console by pressing tab, there are multiple commands. The command for noclip is "ghost" without parenthesis, "allammo" for all weapons. There are maps that aren't present in the load level menus that you can access by doing "open mapnamehere" Go to the maps folder in the Duke Forever directory to view the map names.
