    I really want to do something like this with my own D&D group, but every time I bring it up I get shot down. They're too scared of getting salty at each other and of being targeted and I'm like "Guys? That's the whole point of PvP games? You all play Mario Party together but you're scared to do this? I wouldn't force it on them. D&D really isn't built for PvP, as a lot of character abilities feel so unfair when used on a player, and because some classes have distinct advantages over others in combat. So yes, I think it could lead to hostilities.

      Lava is denser than common depictions (looking at you ROTK), and most creatures would just burn bit by bit depending on what is touching the lava.
      Same goes for molten metal, btw. While a terminator might sink, a typical carbon based creature should be able to bounce out depending on the height of the pit/container walls.
      So assuming you survive the initial HP loss, movement off of lava is suprisingly straight forward.

    • @evernewb2073
      @evernewb2073 5 років тому +7

      pretty much what stephen said but with the caveat that simply being in the area should be cooking you alive from radiated heat ( not to mention the superheated air) poisonous gasses are common around lava but not in high concentration from the lava itself unless it's deep enough to bubble, breathing on the other hand is quite literally impossible since your lungs can not function above a certain temperature even if the most delicate structure in your body (second most? not sure if your eyes are more or less durable than your lungs) is somehow fine with it.
      basically you would need enough fire resistance to tank dragonbreath to survive more than a few moments in the area and a means of bypassing the lack of breathable air for actually touching the lava to be your biggest worry, because that just sorta cooks a small part of you faster than the rest, texture will vary with material and heat but it should be decently traversable if you don't stay still (think cornstarch but slower and heavier) assuming it's not the superhot boily splashy gasspockety stuff that actually does look kinda like the stuff in a movie (oh good lord spellcheck considers "gasspockety" to be a real word...but not spellcheck, okaythen).
      in short: every movie, cartoon, comic, painting, imagery, or really fiction of any sort that you have ever seen has lied horribly about lava. oh, and if you have a counterexample I would genuinely love to hear about it.

    Recently finished about a year long campaign and we had a sorceress who knew banishment. Player didn't like casting it because he felt it was to strong just as I didn't summon pixies (often, I mean I'd pull a few out if I thought we had a tpk on our hands or if I thought a ridiculous show of cartoony power would get us somewhere.) So one day we're fighting this ridiculous demon who hates our ranger for unstated reasons at the time. Dude just slices through the ranger in two rounds and then keeps trying to kill her so finally the Sorceress steps up and banishes this player killer wannabe. That's when the dm learned about the last sentence of banishment. The one that causes creatures from another plane to remain there if they are banished for the full minute. Needless to the demon now really hated two members of our party.

    My group ran a oneshot where our characters had been captured by a Kobold clan and were forced to fight in an arena. Long story short, we defeated everything they threw at us. My character has the Eldritch Evocation "Fiendish Vigor". This means that I can cast False Life on myself at will like a cantrip.
    I was getting annoyed at how tedious and lengthy the game had become for such a trivial thing.

    At my local game store we had 2 separate groups both playing curse of strahd and one week the other DM that wasn't hosting my campaign had to cancel last minute. Half of each group was at the table so we decided to do a battle royale. I had a Yuanti pureblood rogue2bard6 and there was a level 6 fighter, level 8 life cleric, level 8 tempest cleric, level 7 holy paladin, level 7 pact of book warlock, and another fighter (I forget his level). The way my character would normally do an encounter was to charm the strongest dumbest looking guy while using his insane persuasion and deception skills along with tricky spells to make sure he didn't attacked or (my personal favorite) tricking someone into drinking from his flask (which was a potion of poison) but this was a battle royale and I had very little real offensive capability so instead I charmed one of the fighters and forced an alliance before hiding behind an illusion and waiting everything out. The session turned from a battle royale to a weird game of alliances, confusion, and role playing (how my character usually does encounters) that is until my charm got broken when the person I charmed got hit too many times and realized getting killed just because I asked him to was a bullshit reason to die. As word started to get around about my machinations and my former party mates (who didn't trust me in the first place) realized that I was around (in game) the battle royale turned into everyone trying to kill me because I was the only really evil character. I pretty much served as a raid boss; I even summoned a giant snake before I died and almost took one with me. It was one of the most fun sessions i've ever played in.

    I think we all did this at some point in our rpg seasions, stopped and did a battle royal like situation.
    Ours started as a joke, on a day none of us should have assembled but we did... like the makers of Fortnight, and the DM just said "Fuck it, I got something set up in the improve, lets do it."
    What fallowed was a fwe hours of madness.
    I was playing a bard... yes, the same bard who you might know as Gibbs, and what fallowed was why I love this guy so much... as well as his Fallower for we where allowed to do that. Basicly, he took out the rouge first, fallowed that up with the barbarian, and then our magic and healer... all across the five turns...The short version was, he was the manajor of all their equipment, he knew their weaknesses and strengths, who to take out first and last... and it helped when your fallower gets a bonus attack to the one attacking you and is a very scarry crossbow user... ya... Before DM could summon up any traps or the like, Gibbs just whiped the party and was given Wish for his first place thing for just amazing the DM in the fact of "Holly fuck, that lasted shorter than expected."
    We explained htis in game as we all woke up in camp in a short panic, exept Gibbs, who rolled over and murmured something along the lines of "Champion of the world..." before continuing his sleep.

    The massive group I'm part of has done a battle royale thing, with multiple tables as different challenges. It wasn't just straight "player-vs-player", though. Also had environmental hazards AND monsters. We do it yearly.
    I played a Halfling Monk, because reasons, and two archetypes (we were for the most part doing "core rulebook only") were switched out to avoid steamrolling.
    Totem Warrior (because boring Bear Barbarians think they can't take a hit unless they have resistance to almost all things, even if they play more like Berserkers than Totem Warriors [REMEMBER YOUR RITUALS FOR ROLEPLAY!]) and Assassin were taken out in exchange for Zealot and Swashbuckler.
    I succeeded in getting the required item for one of the more complex tables (stealth through like a wimp)... and then died to an ogre at another table. It was funny, because it was a battle royale, but the DM of the simpler table told me that his "twist" on his was that yeah, it's PvP, but there ARE points, like that Ogre, when you need to work together.
    It was fun, one of the DMs was rooting for me, but... I lost, and that's fine.

    I'm honestly amazed nobody chose a Cleric. A decent level Tempest or Forge Cleric are basically broken OP for PVP because you get balls to the wall damage while also having a full compliment of healing spells buffs, and debuffs.

      And that's why they (and Paladin & Barbarian Classes) ARE banned in my homebrew game world...

    • @BiggsBababooey
      @BiggsBababooey 5 років тому +7

      @@veng3r663 Seems like a really odd list to ban, I understand a moon druid ban since the shapes (especially at earlier levels) are arguably the strongest but the other forms of Druid are perfectly fair, if not kind of weak as far as spellcasters go. Paladin I don't get (is it because divine smite has a lot of strong combos when multiclassed?) at best they do a lot of damage with light healing utility, but a pure spellcaster can still do more damage, and a pure non spellcaster (Fighter, Rogue, Monk, Barbarian) is gonna do more damage on every turn than a paladin will unless they use smites to keep up. And barbarians I really don't get at all, they make very good tanks sure, but that's just looking at numbers, their rage has a lot of limiting factors, and intelligent opponents can counter them hardcore by just backing off for a round.
      Honestly, banning any of the core classes for non lore reasons (or inventing lore just to deal with them) is more an admission that you dont know how to craft good encounters to challenge your players. Paladin has some wonky Warlock/Paladin/Rogue combo do do like 200 damage burst on a crit? Throw multiple enemies and threatening Adds to force him to use his resources suboptimally. Druid using wild shapes liberally and you're struggling to deal with them? Make some fights in smaller areas so they can't wild shape into the really threatening stuff, or have multiple encounters between short rests so they don't get wild shape back, even moon druids run out of juice and when in pure spellcaster form they lack a lot of the oomph they normally have. Barbarian is probably the easiest of all to deal with, throw some nonstandard damage types at them, and if they are a bear totem barbarian throw psionic damage, or anything where they have to save with mental stats.
      The DM has infinite power and possibility, banning classes shows a lack of creativity and would be a massive red flag for me unless there's a reason good reason for such a class to not exist. Atheistic world? Okay no Clerics or Paladins perhaps (though paladins don't actually need a god technically). The world is heavily urbanized and nature has little power? Perhaps a druid ban is justified then. People never get angry...? Maybe somehow you could justify a ban for that too. But overall it sounds like a lack of understanding and initiative as a DM to do such a thing.

      @@BiggsBababooey And again I repeat, those three Classes are banned in my HOMEBREWED new game world project.
      But fret not for they still have a total of 26 different Classes to choose from with NO spell duplication at all. That and the 4 Evil NPC-only Classes (Warlock, Witch, Death Master & Carrion Gorelords) on the side for my 'creative' GMing pleasure.... >:)

    • @davidgantenbein9362

      Veng3r Sorry, but this doesn’t sound very promising. It sounds a little bit like you ballooned it to 26 classes so that you can cut down their abilities in order to nerf the PCs. Then you added in NPC only classes in order for your DMPCs to be vastly overpowered and being able to constantly outshine the PCs. Maybe it’s just because I read to many RPG horror stories lately, but it does really sound a bit like that. I hope I‘m wrong and your players do actually have fun and can actually do stuff that has impact and is heroic.

    At my high school we had a gamers guild. We all played 3.5 dnd. But since there was 12 of us we split into 2 groups, 2 dms. Most of the stories ended up with everyone dying and so we kept starting new campaign's every month or so because of that. So it wasn't uncommon for the dms to do oneshot arena battles with characters we'd make on the side in-between the campaigns. At the end of most of our senior year we decided to do a one shot level 30 arena battle between the groups. It was fucking bloody. Spells slinging everywhere. It ended with the other teams FB barbarian vs me the tattooed monk. I survived most of the rest of the fighting because of my ridiculous speed, my many immunities, and my powerful survival feat list. My speed was almost 4x his, so.i ran lime fuck. I did this because it would be guaranteed that he'd kill me if I got close. When we were setting up the characters for the bout the dms offered us a combination of magic items and/or skill increases through training so it wouldn't be vanilla. He took all the training and had a 54 str. He cleaved his way through 3 of my teammates in one turn. He quit after 4 turns of me out running him because he was well into the negatives with his deathless frenzy ability and it'd run out long before he caught me, which would be never, the arena was big enough for me to get far as fuck away from him and stay the distance. We ended our dnd careers with everyone bitching me out for not go8ng head on with him.

I built a level 20 college of the sword bard, it was a bloody and gruesome battle but in the end with 7hp left was my bard standing over the barbarian, the brute fighter, the grave domain cleric, and the warlock. Because it is terrifying what you can do when you can cherry pick your spells
