The chimney at our house was in bad shape. We had birds getting in through the flue, the crown was cracked into pieces, and the bricks were breaking off.
All Parts: • Chimney Repair - Cap, ...
In PART 1: • Install Chimney Cap
The first thing i did was install 2 metal caps to prevent any animals from getting inside the chimney. This wasn't too hard, just 4 screws to attach it to the clay chimney.
In PART 2: • Fix Cracked Chimney Crown
The second thing was to fix the chimney crown. I used a brushable masonry cement. It worked great. Easy to apply with a brush and will hopefully be flexible enough to not crack during the winter months. I used 90% of the 1 gallon bucket to apply 2 coats on a 3'x5' area. I just brushed it on and really forced it into the cracks and any joints.
This video is PART 3: • Waterproof Chimney Sealer
The third thing was to waterproof everything. Hopefully preventing any more water from getting behind the bricks and cause any more damage. I used a sprayer to wet down everything i could reach up near the top of the chimney. I covered the crown and all of the bricks. Really focusing on areas where bricks were broken or where i could see water being able to get in.

Thanks for the videos. Did the sealer seem to do the job? I just removed and re-did the crown on my chimney, but I'm thinking of trying to seal the bricks as well. Looking for a decent product that I can actually afford. Thanks!

Use prosoco p d siloxanee waterproofing repellent that's better than that cheep stuff. That's for bricks then use a chimney crown paint for the cap.

That’s s huge chimney. How bad was the leaking in the chimney and did this fix the problem? I have wire cut bricks that are in the same condition as yours. I guess in the 80’s they were a cheaper option. I used Re-Cap to seal the cracks and it was great for a month. The southeast is getting a lot of rain and it’s leaking again. Can you still bien in your fireplace? Thanks for this video.

No water was leaking into the chimney or into the house. It was just getting behind the bricks, the freezing during the winter and popping the bricks off.
We've never really use the fireplaces, they are gas.
And i haven't checked the grout since i put it on there, but i put it on real thick and with 2 coats.
