How to Sew a Knee-Rise Contour Cushion with Fabric Backing

- Learn how to sew a hi-lo knee-riser contoured cushion that has a fabric back side. It is not stapled to a backer board. This type of contoured cushion has two separate pieces of foam. In the front of the cushion is a thicker foam called a knee riser or bolster. In the back of the cushion is a low foam that forms the seat of the cushion. In between these two sections of foam, inside the cushion cover, is a fabric pull with a zippered opening that is sewn to the top and bottom plates. The fabric pull accomplishes two things: It keeps the foam in the appropriate location and it pulls the cushion fabric down snuggly between the hi-low foam, giving it a contoured and professional look.

Wow THANK YOU! this is so very helpful. But I have to say, I was holding my breath watching the sewing of the boxing to the top plate, of course, I'll watch the video a few more times before actually cutting anything, much less sewing. You guys have no idea how helpful are all your videos. I've already made so many things for our boat thanks to your directions.
Inside curved cushions are the hardest to get the vinyl to lay flat against the foam! Would love to see a video on these as so many boats have these especially the back seat cushions! Love your videos!! They keep me sane in my sewing projects!
What perfect timing! This is exactly the cushion I am looking to make.
I am thankful this video showed me there is no way in hell I can pull it off!
I can now adjust my plan to something more in my skill range.
I just made an irregular cockpit cushion (with Pattern and Piping) for my first project. I wanted to give up at step one of cutting the fabric because I didn't even know how to cut and measure out fabric. I struggled through at every step of the way, but I finally finished the cushion and it looks pretty good for my first ever sewing project! I entourage you to give it a try!
Exactly what I was looking for as well! From Down Under, thanks Sailrite
awesome video, just what I needed! And yes, please do a video on cushions with a curve. thank you
We will be working it in someday soon. Be sure to subscribe.
Thanks for video! Very helpful! Would love to see videos of different shaped cushions!

Awesome!! Eric, simply well done. Definite high interest for all sailors who want to redo their flat saloon cushions with a knee riser.
If not for these videos I wouldnt have considered many of these projects. Thank you for sharing and your continued support if veterans!
Would definitely like to see curved cushion knee riser

certainly interested in seeing the curved version, about to redo all interior cushions in this fashion. also wondering about recommendations for a curved cushion around a straight bench seat....
Glad to hear it. We still would like to see more interest before we make that video tutorial. Anyone else want to see it?
I would love to see this with an angled section in the same idea as a hockey stick laying flat with the blade and shaft! I have tried one and it has more wrinkles than a Shar Pei dog! Lol!
We have not yet added that project to our future list. We would like to see more comments asking for it before we do.

This is a great tutorial on how to upholster these types of cushions. I have just followed this step by step on an exact same cushion and it's come out great thanks to your videos.
Have you done a video on a curved cushion as yet? I now have 2 curved cushions either side of the box type cushion. I'm scratching my head on how the fabric pull will work as I'm sure it will pucker up as its stitched around the curve.
Any help or link to a video you have done would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Please share tutorial of the curved rupe cushion!
I like your page
If you were using a vinyl that is not 4 way stretch and existing foam, how would you measure? Would you add seam allowance on all sides? I would also like to see a video's demonstrating curved and curved knee rise cushions. I am expecting delivery of my new LSZ-1 premium package tomorrow in preparation for re upholstering my pontoon furniture. Thanks again for great instructional videos. Would not have had the confidence to tackle such a project otherwise.

Extent video as always. Can this be done with the Sailrite Fabricator?
Yes, absolutely it can be sewn with the Sailrite Fabricator sewing machine.
Thanks for the tutorial. Question: you wanted a finished 22” width and you cut the foam at 23” to add compression, but I noticed you cut the top and bottom plates at 23” width. Is that correct? Does that result in a 22” Final width?
We usually cut the plates to the same size as the foam. Then when the seam allowance of 1/2" is taken away the plates will be smaller in size and compress the foam. So, yes that is correct.
@@SailriteDIY right! Seam allowance, forgot. Thanks
Would love to see a curved version.
Thanks for letting us know. We may be shooting a curved version this winter, if we keep getting more requests.

On your plates why do you not add for the seam allowance? Same on side panels?
If I’m using existing cover wouldn’t I just measure seam to seam on right side the add for seam allowance?
We want the foam to be slightly compressed for a good fit. So, after seam allowance is taken the cushion cover is slightly smaller than the foam for a better fitting cover.
Would like to learn how to sew a hi-lo knee-riser contoured cushion that has a fabric back side.
can the knee bend cushion style be used for a mattress to elevate the head of the bed?
Never tried that, but maybe. I just get a second pillow.
That would be me I'm guilty I'm sorry I would do it for some ungodly reason I've done it I do lift up cushions to see the stitching on the bottom side
I’d like to see the curved version
Me too!
Thanks for letting us know.
