  • This 2014 Honda Civic came in with a "poor acceleration" complaint.
The owner took it to a shop that diagnosed a fluid leak, and told her that it needs a new transmission!
Let's diagnose the issue and see if this CVT lives to fight another day :)

The nice thing about the Civic is you can get it with a manual transmission. Also there is more to the story with this car. An after market axle that looks old on a car with 60k? I'm going with totaled and rebuilt.

Or maybe not totalled, but someone slid into a curb or had the wheel hit by another car. That could easily be an old insurance repair.

@@volvo09 I tore the boot on a car many years ago when I was driving on a snow plowed road that was really not wide enough for two cars and had to get over when I met another car and my car went axle deep in the plowed snow. I didn't look to see if there was any damage to the axle boot since there was no body damage. The next time I changed oil in my car I saw the grease on the inside of the tire and the boot was torn and the joint was dry of grease. No need to get a boot, just got a reman axle. Just because an axle is changed at 60K isn't always an accident and it wouldn't make an accident report because of the deductible so it would never be reported on car report. To me it looked like a car owner may have changed the axle, not a garage.

    • @kain0m

Pretty standard for passive TPMS. Most VW group cars have a simple, very descriptive menu option "reset tire pressure monitoring". When you select it, the system asks you to confirm that all four tires are inflated to the correct pressure, and that's it. It is much more effective than those active sensors; because people actually use it. With the active sensors, if there is no inspection item for it, everyone simply ignores it - because fixing a TPMS light can cost hundred of dollars if the sensor need to be replaced. And you need a scan tool and knowledge to do it...

Little spring is called a garter spring. Cheap, crappy fix for a leaking lip seal, you can take the spring out, unroll the ends, trim some off and re-roll the ends back together and it makes it tighter. Works sometimes, but of course isn't a permanent fix.

My son's 2003 Accord developed a leak in this exact area. It happened after he bottomed out after turning to fast into a parking lot in Atlantic City. Got home and noticed hardly any tranny fluid. Removed axle and examined the rubber seal that goes into transmission. Noticed the circular metal spring was pinched, must have happened following it bottoming out. Replaced with OEM seal, 1 year later and all good.

My 2010 Civic is older and does have TPMS sensors in all tires. Batteries in the sensors go bad after 5 years and you get a TPMS warning intermittently for a couple of months until it stays on for good unless you replace the battery or the sensor. Earlier tire pressure systems, without sensors, used the relative speed of the tires from the ABS system to infer one was “flat” because was spinning faster than the others

TPMS systems on the new Honda's are very sensitive. I have had issues with the system on my mums Honda. Even differences in tyre tread will cause it to go off. Another time it was causing trouble I cured it by servicing the rear disc brakes. The two times it was indicating a tyre problem she didn't think anything was wrong and had a tyre blow out on a roundabout.

Previous mechanic damaged the seal when replacing the axle. How do I know that? Two pieces of evidence. One, the axel nut was not locked and two, the bolt used was a replacement so likely the oem bolt/nut he damaged trying to remove it. Those indicators tells me Mr. Inexperienced was doing the work and banged into the seal with the axle. Unsure why those parts were replaced but the customer likely has a story. I'd have replaced that seal when doing an axle replacement...maybe he did but damaged it.

Took it to mechanic, and they couldn’t find anything wrong. Now, only 4 months later at 97k miles, I started to feel my transmission slip a couple days ago (when shifting into 2nd gear), and my engine light came on yesterday.

Check out 1:27---One of the driver side strut bolts are put in backwards!
Yes this was car was either in an accident or had some bad suspension damage and was repaired by an inexperienced mechanic.
While autoauctions.io would catch this if it went thru Copart/IAAA, this smells like an off-the-book fix that was done cheap and fast.

There's a brief moment near the beginning where you can see the driver's side front corner all scuffed up. Not sure if it's from the same incident but that's some coincidence. Wouldn't be surprised if someone kissed a high curb or guardrail in that thing and got a cut-rate fix.

Overfilling is not always a good idea. Honda give specific limits on the Jazz/Fit CVT oil level. The oil can become over pressurised or even foam leading to poorer lubrication.

Love your channel, I have an 04 Honda 2.4l element and I recently was running rich no codes no symptoms other than exhaust rich smell. Fuel trims at idle were about minus 13 both short and long with minimal improvement on acceleration. I first went ahead and readjusted all valves ( were tight) since it's a new to me 150k mileage car and now all my fuel trims have improved to minus 6 short term minus 3 long term. People on the forum don't believe that adjusting valves improved my trims. Can you tell me why it did something?

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  3 роки тому +1

If it's a MAP engine, tight valves could have caused decreased intake vacuum and thus overfueling by the ECM. So makes sense!

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics thanks yes map engine. Still don't like that I have minus 7 at idle but will live with it for now. I have a new oem upstream sensor, new air filter, oem spark plugs, map reading looks good on my live data and throttle body is clean and not reading crazy either. I do have an exhaust leak before my upstream air fuel sensor but I would think that would get me lean positive? Any suggestions other than checking fuel pressure? Have no misfire so I doubt my fuel injectors are leaking. Thank you.

Check your knock sensor as well. I had a long 6 months of running rich, misfiring that would come and go on my 07 Accord 2.4. No one could figure it out and finally the check engine light came on after 6 months of questionable performance for the knock sensor. Runs great now 218,000 miles! I guess the sensor is known to get brittle over long periods of time.

@@paquesepas6696 Mine also ran rich too because the air filter housing, and tube can get leaky if not put back on correctly. I noticed my rubber pipe is cracking too with age. On the Accord, this leak sets off same code as oxygen sensor.

Gotta love these procedures where you have to drive around aimlessly (18 minutes!!) to get things to work. Ironically, they created these systems to save fuel ... yet you waste fuel driving around to calibrate them. Just like government logic! Ridiculousness. Anyway, nice work saving the customer several grand!

My 2012 civic with 196k miles in second gear it is stuttering or shaking a little but over all the car shifts and runs fine. I was told it’s the transmission issue. I’m wondering if I change the filter and transmission oil if that possibly will fix it ? Because those things likely were never changed. Or if it’s a simple fix instead of a whole new transmission. Can anyone give me advice thanks 🙏

My youngest sibling just got a brand-new, 2020 Honda Civic sedan, slightly over a year ago. It has the CVT transmission. It could be better than this fairly older, 2014 Honda Civic sedan with the CVT. This one was a nightmare due to slow acceleration and slippage. I would definitely run away from this one and buy a used, 2018 Mazda 3 sedan with the 2.5 L Skyactiv four-cylinder engine and the six-speed automatic transmission with sport mode. They are a lot more reliable and they have more power for a compact vehicle.
