Guys did a good job. I have worked with different companies providing UD training. Some companies don’t provide enough training and the proper tools to properly make these terminations. My experience has taught me that some of the less experienced think that if it holds upon energizing everything is ok. They do not know or realize that improper termination of medium voltage cables with the proper tools will eventually fail prematurely. I came up with I company that provided the training that taught us why we take all the proper steps in UD terminations and the proper tools. While providing training most of those that didn’t follow each step required by manufacturers just didn’t know. Most these guys want to do it right

The craftsmanship is very skilled. For future inspection and maintenance, I feel that if the three-color tape is wrapped on the wiring cable to separate the phases, and whether the phase sequence is marked on the cabinet body will be clearer to the staff.

    • @deang5622
      @deang5622 Рік тому +3

No. Phase sequence is not determined by the body of the transformer.
Phase sequence is determined by the actual phase of the voltage on the cables.
You can actually change the order of the cables connected to the transformer and as long as the output cables are also correspondingly changed, everything is good.
So the correct way to indicate the phase of the electricity is to mark the cables first and foremost. You cannot not do that. It must be done.

@@LordLorenzo834 It was well over 30 years ago and I was not actually making the connections but an observer apprentice, Working with MCM1000 AL they had specialized strippers that cut 95% through the plastic rolling it in a circle with end cutter set to the same to cut down the length of the cable so the plastic would easily peel off leaving the AL completely unscathed.
The thing about AL is once you score a strand it creates a fracture point when you crank it down in the lug and the strands distort, it can cause strands to fracture/break completely through. AL it brittle like that. Of course you must also use Noalox as I recall.

use extended elbows EZ FIX ...we have even cut off OLD elbows short and still re use the old cable just have new elbows and lightning arresters ..this is just a 3 phase going IN im sure they got 3 more on the other side.

why did they lubricate the exposed part of the cable with silicone this will worsen the contact

It's probably has dielectric properties so when tightened IF any is between it shouldn't effect much, on the other hand it should provide waterproofing, oxidation and maybe lessens the chance of arching (not sure how effective on high voltage but on main breaker panel thin layer on rail contacts might prevent arching when breaker is installed in that spot..

You never wanna use a constructive material to secure MV cables inside equipment.
Proper application would've been some sort of fiberglass bracing.
Was not fond of the stress cones on those MV terminations.
Tying and bonding to a grounded rod or job ground-loop may have been a better idea. I've had to do so even on smaller, pad-mounted XFMRs.

My favourite was the clamp/strap that secured the cable in.
It looks like they drilled the holes by shorting it out on a car battery.

looking at the cable, I think that some-one misplaced a decimal point, as one would not want to use any voltage below 400V/3phase for any substantial length .. this looks like 200V and looking for a 1.5% drop. maybe this is cheaper than a transformer in the short run. the cable looks to be 2.5cm dia. PLUS the definition of " Medium Voltage Cables" is 2.4kV and above.. so is it MW that we are really looking at?
