I used to have the 401s, my first Nikon. It was a major upgrade from my Praktica MTL5B except for manual options. I changed the Nikon later for a 601 which was an oddball in on itself in that it had a mechanical wire release screw opening in the shutter button but also some of the features of the 801 and more manual options possible with it. With some M42 adaptor i could somehow use some M42 screw lenses, but the quality and ease of use of my 35-70mm kitlens and later 70-210mm exceeded all other M42 lenses i had, except for the 17mm Tokina, which would have been extremely expensive if it would have been a Nikon lens, though at the time only 13 15 18 and 20 super wide angle lenses existed (not taken in into account for the 6 and 8 and 16mm fisheyes).
When the clasp of the back broke of the 601 i couldn't use it anymore. I later bought a used 801s and that was the last Nikon and analogue camera i owned before going to digital and handycams. I rarely use it anymore, a few occassions i fiddled with Ektachrome Infrared and UV, with blackfilters, stuff like that, but i believe that is hardly available anymore.

The F801 is a great camera, with great reviews. It can use a vast range of Nikon lenses, from the first AI through to the AF-D versions. 1/8000 top shutter speed and 1/250 flash sync can be useful as well.
