Canon RF 50mm 1.2L vs 1.8 Portrait Battle - Is it really 10 TIMES better?

  • In this one Mitch, Carlo and I compare the two 50mm RF lenses during a portrait shoot. The great value / tiny nifty-fifty F1.8 STM lens vs the highly priced F1.2L USM lens. I also have a quick look at some of the files at the end to compare my thoughts on the lenses.

There is a massive phobia that many of us photographers have about using more affordable lenses. The performance of the RF 50mm f/1.8 is more than adequate to shoot with professionally to some capacity. It’s not really until you go looking for its flaws that we find the perfection delivered by the L-series. The 1.2L is an elite lens that is practically flawless optically, aside from the peripheral cats eye bokeh - which I tend to like but can be distracting. Great demonstration showing what multiple photographers can achieve with a budget lens versus a Goliath. Would love to see more of these and in multiple conditions!

Glad you were super practical with your response. Like you hit the nail on the head you'd hope the 1.2 would be heaps sharper for the price and I'd definitely agree that for the price the 1.8 punches well above its price range. And on the one shot the 1.8 color was warmer but also very natural.

i would say is just like spending money on a fragrance
A $30 fragrance would probably do a good job making you smell good. But if you spend 250 on a niche one, the complexity and extra quality factor it brings can be appreciated for whoever knows how to use it.
Now obviously $100 of a 50 mm 1.8 vs a $2000 one is way bigger of a difference. But remember these are tools and at the end of the day is an investment. The weather sealing, 1.2 aperture and other characteristics of this 50 mm can work for an specific type of job that a professional is willing to spend for

Great video because a lot of people doesn't know that the quality of the lens affects the colors that the sensor receives, and from this it was obvious that the f1.2 produce richer colors. Perhaps this video should also include waveforms from the Raw output of both cams so this point can be made even clearer.

For bokeh, buy an EF 85mm f1.8 and use it with an adapter. Sony has the FE 85mm f1.8 which is incredible and doesn't need an adapter. I have an R6II + RF 50mm f1.8. I'm getting ready to go Sony because Canon doesn't have entry quality lenses. Only RF L lenses. Or use an adapter. Sony A7C+FE 85mm f1.8. Small, light, sharp, with melting bokeh and no adapter.

I picked which was which without even having to think about it each time, I do think the 1.8 lens is awesome for it's price point but I think it was a bit disingenuous to imply that the differences were "Barely noticeable" ....I don't know if it's the higher end coatings or what but the 1.2 lens, even at 1.8 has almost a 3d depth to the images

Great video... Question - how do you get around the 1/8000 max shutter speed, when shooting wide open at F1.2? In daylight my RF50mm f1.8 often clips at 1/8000!! the only solution is to increase the aperture a stop or two f2.8 f3.2 etc... But I don't want to! If I lower the ISO to 50 - it just blows out the highlights, looks yuk! (Street photography on an R6 with face/eye tracking is so easy, an amazing camera for speed/accuracy, except for the 1/8000 limit!!!).
On my Fujifilm X-T3 it can shoot up to 1/32,000 - I wish canon had this feature...

The f/1.2 is definitely better, in every respect: Sharper, better tonality, more micro-contrast etc. But obviously it's not ten times better. For 10% more quality you pay ten times the prica of the cheaper lesn. If I were a professionell portrait photographer I would go for the L- lens. But I am very happy with my copy of the f/1.8, which I got for ridiculously 120 Swiss Francs.
My wish is that canon introduces a medium-line of primes with f/1.4 - better than the f/1.8, but cheaper and lighter than the f/1.2 lenses.

Thank you for the insightful video. In the end, it's the customers who decide the quality of our work or ourselves if it's meant for our hard drive....
I doubt they will necessarily know the difference here. Why? Quite simple! It may be so true in comparison, one optics is certainly better than the other in nuances, however, the cheaper is still sufficiently good... if everything does not help there are still the editing softwares... I did my training a long time ago, what unsettles me a little is the fact that we can say goodbye to photography as a craft soon... everything you use nowadays is already AI.
Unfortunately the profession will have to be renamed soon from my point of view, that's what's happening with many jobs right now... what we do in today's world is more the job of a creator and not the learned profession of an analog photographer anymore... ergo we are digital creators nowadays with the support of AI's... that's fine though it hardly makes sense for me to always compare everything, because everything we buy and use nowadays is good if not even 'very good' already 😌

I would say so! Even for a lot of professionals, unless you shoot A LOT on 50mm and need the best of the best. I reckon the 1.8 is a solid choice

@@stephenwratten9882 Hi Stephen , I don’t have the 1.2 , I was just mentioning how crazy expensive that lens is here, perhaps not to professionals where it would be a business expense / tools of trade. Never the less I’ve had the 1.8 EF then RF versions in my bag for two decades although I’ll be honest it doesn’t get used perhaps as much as it should. Cheers from NZ

The truth is rf 50mm f1.2 is the sharpest lens in RF series.. like ef 135L on EF. They are crazy sharp…

I sent my 50 1.8 back, complete trash. Even shooting at 2.8, the bottom third of all my portraits were blurry, like every one of them. The bokeh quality is busy and terrible too. Maybe I just got a bad copy but I have no interest in spending another $200 to find out.

It's not correct compare both lens at 1.8, the sharpness of a lens improve when you close a little bit the aperture. At 1.8, the 50 1.2 is closed while 50 1.8 not. Anyways, everybody now that the 1.2 is still better. But this would be the correct way to compare both lens.
