I HIGHLY recommend a fieldtrip to the Nuccio nursery in Altadena, CA (Pasadena). It's impressive to see all the selection and the guys are SO friendly.
Janey - Camellias can do very well as an Espalier. The one in your secret garden could be moved over and made to fill the blank wall, with (eventually) your bistro set in front, making an amazing backdrop.

My wife and I have had a tradition over the last 15 years of visiting Nuccio's Nursery every February and gifting each other at least one new variety of Camelia as a Valentine's gift. We now have close to 40 varieties that we use as vase flowers daily. Our past Valentine's gifts give us flowers from Halloween through St. Patrick's Day and on.
( Try this trick, it is cheap and easy to do). Last year we took a picture of each plant's bloom. We used the computer to place the flower's name on the photo. These photos were then printed, laminated, hole-punched, and zip-tied to their corresponding plants. Now, all year we have at least one life-sized flower to remind us and guests what the varieties look like even out of season!

I live about a half hour away from Nuccio’s Nurseries. My friend and I went out there and met both brothers who are the nicest people! We told one of them about your show and segment on their nursery. We both bought camellia’s and my friend got a couple of azaleas that they also grow. The place is amazing!
    Thanks for the recommendation!

Those are all such beautiful camelias, they are going to look great in your new garden! A word of caution though, they get so big and you've planted them very close to other trees, walls, and fences. That's going to make for difficult maintenance in years to come. Both on the plants and the structures around them. My home came with some gorgeous old camelias that are about three feet away from the house and it feels too close. They are far enough away to not be causing foundation issues, but they have to be pruned away from the house when it's painted and it mars their shape. Camelias shine their best with breathing room to really showcase their structure and evergreen foliage!

Good morning from North East, Maryland. Thank you for all your videos. I’ve purchased more PW plants this year. My zone is 7b . Great plants and information helps how to plant , mix and colors. I’m retired, enjoying gardening full time. Even my husband is amazed by the transformation of our new gardens. He is building new walls for the gardens , walk ways, I design the area with plants and fountains.

Same as you Janey, I grew up with camellias. My mom had huge red, white, pink, and dark pink and white with thick stripes. I wish I could find the pink and white. Here in the California High Desert, I'd have to plant on north side of the house. I'm partial to light and dark pink. One would look nice by the fountain that Robbie got you in the shade garden

A tip for planting your friend didn't touch on, or you had forgot, is you want to plant your camellias with an inch or tw of rootball proud of the ground level. They do not like to be at ground level or below. I love your choice and Nuccio's has some of. the best plants. We nearly lost all of them in the recent Altadena fire. They lost a large part of their propagation area but most all of the potted plants survived, They are open for business I think, 4 days a week. Happy Planting.

I love camellias. the Nuccio brothers are world famous and still going strong after all these years. Here in the UK I have a Nuccio's Cameo, a Donation and a hiemalis Shishigashira. I don't have the acid soil for them but I amend it with sulphate of iron and feed them regularly so I just about get away with it, such a shame after 90 years the brothers are selling up but if the younger generation don't want to take it on what can they do? I hope they have a happy retirement - their legacy will certainly live on for many years to come.

I live in L.A. (zone 10b) and coincidentally, next week I'm meeting a gardening friend who lives in Pasadena and we're heading up to Nuccio's (they're in Altadena)!! I'm getting 2 azaleas (we have 4 large camellia bushes), and one is going next to a camellia that's over 6 feet so I want a big floral display. Nuccio is also known for their azaleas. I love camellia's too, especially the leaves, and all of ours are about 30 years old and between 6 and 7 ft. tall. Our soil is acidic, around 5.5 and I've never fertilized them (or watered them). They've done quite well on the nutrients in our soil and the rainfall we get (usually in winter) Maybe I'll fertilize them this year to see how they respond! One is in full sun, the rest get full sun in summer and full shade in winter (they're on the north side of the house). Our climate is mild most of the year, and the one that gets full sun all year has the most prolific blooms! Can't wait to get my azaleas, lol!!

I love camellias and can't wait to see yours in bloom. I've just added one to my 9b garden, too.😊
I'm sorry to hear you aren't going with the full green wall on your long driveway, though. It looks wide enough to have a variety of beautiful plants in front of a solid green wall, which I think is what Michael Glassman was suggesting: a beautiful, solid green background to enclose your beautiful garden oasis! Breaking up the skyline won't have the same effect.🤔
I'm sure you're having a hard time waiting for his full plans to be delivered! I know I'm looking forward to seeing them.

They do great here in zone 9b central Florida under the shade of our oaks and are treat in the winter time 🌺 For anyone near Orlando, FL we have a great place in Casselberry called South Seminole Farm and Nursery that carries over 40 varieties just about year round! Janey, I have a Camellia japonica which is about 9 years old. Two years ago, the large redbud I had growing to the west and over the camellia died! I have a hackberry planted to the east of the camellia. So my camellia gets morning shade and from about 1PM on, full sun. I do have a very thick mix of ground covers around it so the roots are shaded. The camellia is too large for me to move so I just crossed by fingers. The first year the west side of the camelia got some burned leaves. This year it looks great. So in my experience, camellias can take a fair amount of sun. I live just south of you in zone 9a.

But today is leaf blowing/raking day so will be sticking at home for that. Have a wonderful day! Hours later.....since I was out going to grocery for a forgotten item for dinner and I was kinda going past my nursery...I found a 1 gallon Yuletide! I am so excited to get it in the ground, but felt like adding to my post first! I also got some organic fertilizer while there for it and my azaleas. Fun!!

Good morning. Great video, thanks for sharing. I garden in NJ 7a. I first heard of camellias from a fav childhood movie (musical), ANNIE. If you've never seen it - there's a part when Daddy Warbucks takes them to the movies to see the movie Camille. And in that classic movie, Greta Garbo is talking about her love of Camellias as she's holding a bouquet of camellias. Anyway... I now consider myself an avid ornamental-gardener and I want my own bouquet of beautiful camellias. I specifically want white. I am growing monochromatic flower beds around my home. But honestly I will make room for any color Camillia on my property!!!!!

had mines for about 10yrs, with your pictures looks a lot like it could be Gem. In my experience, I do love it but cons are because it is white, it looks messy as it fades and looks yellow and brown. Because the blooms are so prolific, to keep looking pretty, it needs constant deadheading and drops tons of pedals. Sometimes leaves curl, black spots and Japanese Beatles was another problem. Despite all that, if I find some of these you showed, I would love to get more. Can’t wait to see yours bloom!

Should be beautiful ! Are the first 2 planted together a bit close for there full grown size? Also the one on the side of house seems close to the house for its full grown size? It's nice to let them grow naturally an not prune to keep small so it is not running into the house. Keep gardening😊

I’m ready to go camellia shopping! Have screened shot some you talked about. Seeing how I live in South Carolina, I’m going to also need that big brim hat you both wore. Where can I find it.

My camellias grow in full sun in Georgia. They are 10-12 feet tall. They look best on the corner of a house but out about 6 feet. I have 6 the one at my mailbox looks like red roses when it blooms, 2 are pink and 3 are white. I have rooted so many.

I love camellias. I’m in zone 9b but way over in Florida and have a ton of camellias myself.

I enjoyed hearing about Nuccio camillias, Im going to look around for one of those. I noticed when you were planting that you werent looking at the bottom of the plant, the dirt/root area. Shouldnt you take a look and rough up the roots a little bit?!
