    Paddy's DIY - How to replace a cockspur handle on an old aluminium window
    Another great instructional video brought to you by Paddy's DIY
    In this video I’m going to show you how to replace a cockspur handle on an aluminium window
    This is a cockspur window handle, and they are usually found on aluminium and old uPVC windows. The spur on the handle closes down over a plastic wedge on the window frame to close and lock the window. Cockspur window handles come in a number of heights. 21mm, 17mm & 13mm are usually found on old uPVC windows and 9mm are usually found on aluminium windows.
    With aluminium windows the window handle will nearly always be fixed to the sash with rivets. And the window handle will nearly always be fixed immediately in front of the glazing. So before we start we need to take the appropriate precautions to prevent breaking the glass. I remove the bottom glazing seal and I can see there is enough room to drill out and remove the old rivets. This gap will differ from window to window. It is so easy to accidentally break the glazing when replacing a cockspur window handle. I would definitely recommend taking out the glazing, replacing the handle and then refitting the glazing.
    • Remove the bottom rubber glazing seal with a flat screwdriver.
    • Use a paint scraper and put it in the gap behind the handle. This will protect the glazing as you drill off the rivets.
    • Next fit a metal drill bit into your drill. This is a 5mm drill bit. And carefully drill the heads off the rivets.
    • Remove the old handle base and remove the remains of the old rivets.
    • Drill out each hole
    • The new handle lines up exactly with the old holes. Line up the new handle and fit a rivet into the hole, the rivets I’m use are 4.8mm diameter. It is essential you choose the correct length rivet. Too short and the rivets will pull out. Too long and they can break the glazing
    • Pull the rivet using a riveter. Repeat on the remaining holes.
    • Push back in the rubber glazing seal
    • Test the operation of the handle and to finish off, fit the cover cap
    As you can see the window is difficult to open and close, this is because the hinges are broken. This is the reason the existing handle broke in the first place. All the extra force used to open and close the window when the hinges are broken is put on the window handle causing it to break.

      Hi Clive, the ones i usually use are 15mm long, but it would depend on the thickness of the window handle.

    Thanks Paddy as ever. I've gone to replace the hinges on a similar window, but on the window frame itself, the hinges have been riveted on! Hence I came across this movie of the rivets on the handle here. What do I do? Drill out the rivets and then rivet the new hinge on? TIA much appreciated.

    Great video thanks, question, my double glazing window handle is screwed in, the one thread is stripped so the screw doesn't fit anymore meaning the handle is loose and doesn't seal properly, is it easy enough to replace screwed with pop rivets?

    • @PaddysDiy
      @PaddysDiy  2 роки тому +1

      You have a couple of options. You could try a screw the same length with a wider thread. You could also try a longer screw, but you would want to take the glass out first or the longer screw could break the glass.
      Or you could reposition the handle 5mm to the opposite side of the original holes. So you would have fresh material to drill into
      Or you could try rivets. They aren't marvelous on pvc windows though

    You don't need to de-glaze, you can just put a flat scraper between the glass and the frame so the drill bit dosen't hit the glass!

      Absolutely. Works in most cases. You'll get some windows with a very small gap between the glazing and rivets. That's where you'll get caught. I always err on the side of caution

    5:51 Just looking at this, why not just take the bottom seal off like your doing now and proceed from there as the paint scraper is protecting the glazing whilst drilling?. What was the point of taking away all the seals and glazing beads and replacing them straight away and then putting the handle on with the glazing window in place?. Even though you are advocating to change the handle with the glazing off you are doing it with the glazing in as I can see the reflection. Im just a but puggled. I have an aluminum kitchen top window just like this only 3 times the size with the same rivits.
    You wouldnt be up in North Dublin at any point or know anyone in Dublin that could come out and do this?.

    • @PaddysDiy
      @PaddysDiy  13 годин тому

      It just to show that's how you would remove the glass or doubke glazing to change the handle. In some windows the space left is too small to remove the rivets without breaking the glass. But the window in this video is wide enough that it can be done without fear of breaking the glass. But for someone that doesn't have experience i would recommend removing the glass or doubke glazing.
      I don't go near dublin I'm afraid. Andy in the window repair company is located in north dublin.
