This is so incredibly in depth and after my own 160 hours of gameplay everything you say and the criticisms are extremely valid. You’re stronger than me not using mods to fix the late game lmao. M&B scratches an itch that no other game can. When I first played the original back in 09, it was such a visceral thrill to spear people on horseback. Now, in 2022, it's such a visceral thrill to spear people on horseback in a higher resolution! M&B and Kenshi are the two games that keep calling me back for hundreds of hours at a time

      I'm really bad at spearing people from horseback in Warband and previous M&Bs, but I'm a natural at it in Bannerlord. IMO, I think combat overall is leagues better in BL than WB, as well as sieges, armies, and well... everything related to battles.

      @@Halcylion Alas, Bannerlord's combat is better only superficially. It undoubtedly looks a lot better than Warband's, but it doesn't play nearly as well when coming up against competent opposition (which, regrettably, bots are not) for a number of factors, such as the stance system, which adds a lot of inconsitency to the game, or putting crush through on weapons other than 2h mallets. I understand that most sp players will disagree, but I still wanted to provide a perspective shared by most of the old warband mp players.

    Don't know why I actually watched a review for this game after playing it for hundreds of hours and watching it on UA-cam for even longer but I agree with almost every point you made. And this video was edited fantastically, with nice bits sprinkled in to keep the energy high.
    This game frustrates me a lot because it's a jack of all trades but master of none. Except maybe the combat, they absolutely nailed that part. But at the end of the day, there is literally no other game like it. So I love it for the unique experience it provides, even if a lot of its features are under baked. I don't think it nails combat. Has the ideas, but I still don't like having to look to the left or walking to the left to attack from the left. Plus, stabs suck at close quarters, which is ironic. Spears being deflected by skin is not quite adequate. I miss being able to have fast bursts of movement to dodge or hit harder too. I believe you get the idea.
      Still like the game a lot, though.

    To review the game without mods then casually mention at the end that you can fix half the (mechanical) negatives by subbing to the appropriate mod seemed kinda odd. I know that in a conventional reviewing sense you wouldn't include mods but this is M&B we're talking about. I sincerely hope that anyone who played pimped-out Warband doesn't actually intend to play a modless vanilla Bannerlord campaign...
    Steam Workshop support dropping ONE MONTH before the game's 1.0 release says it all. Even TW don't expect you to play this game without mods, and they fully intend on letting "the community" (dev code for unpaid labour) finish the game for them. Honestly the 1.0 release was pretty meaningless in terms of actual development, and Bannerlord is still *at least* a year away from being in a state where we can unequivocally call it superior to Warband (thanks to mods, obviously).
    For now, it is definitely not a stretch to call something like "Prophecy of Pendor" a considerably more in-depth and feature-complete experience than Bannerlord. Hell, even vanilla Viking Conquest with just the Warband Diplomacy mod is miles ahead in some aspects. While I understand your editorial decision, I don't think it quite makes sense here - reviewing Bannerlord means reviewing Bannerlord _with mods_ and you probably could have waited a while longer before doing that. Perhaps in 2023 you can do an "update" review that includes all the "conventionally accepted" game-improvement mods that will be stable by that time. Look at Warband - even if you wanted the most authentic Calradic experience possible, with 99% real butter, there's still a half-dozen mods or-so that you just _wouldn't play the game without_ and you probably wouldn't even view the game in any way that excluded those mods. Just sayin'.
    Still a great video when taken as a piece of entertainment aimed at someone who already owns (and has played a few hundred hours of) Bannerlord. Thanks for the chuckles

    To claim that Bannerlord is "modder friendly" is a slap in the face to the modding community.
    There has been almost NO support for modding from the devs and EVERY patch they do (and they patch A LOT) destroys 80% of all mods.
    so MANY mods are dead because the modders could not update them every 2 weeks because another stupid update dropped.
    So many modders left for that exact reason, their entire work being destroyed by another pointless update that adds almost nothing.
    The only reason the game still has mods is because the vanilla is bad and boring and because some modders are just stubborn or have developed superior tools to what the devs have.
    Its mainly people from mount and blade 1 who just are used to modding and love the genre.
    If bannerlord was their first game, no one would mod it, because of have f**** up it is to do so.
    The community has to create EVERYTHING themselves, the modding tools, the unpackers, the mod managers, the mods, there is ZERO support from the devs, there isnt even a modding menu in the freaking game, so wtf are you talking about being modding friendly???
    Bannerlord is one the most toxic games when it comes to modding, the devs hate modders.

    Bannerlord suffers from "Wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle". There are a lot of systems in place, however, most of them are either very shallow, very basic, unfinished, unbalanced, repetetive/boring or all of the above. Not pretending warband didnt have this issue too, but warband was in 2010. We obviously expected more depth and complexeity.

    • @CaspianNomad
      @CaspianNomad Рік тому +1

      Exactly, and what's crazy to me is they already had great features from Viking Conquest which they chose to go backwards on with Bannerlord. The naval battles, raiding and outposts mainly.
      Also Warband despite being shallow, posed a greater challenge of you chose to be lowborn or female, or a bigger challenge if you chose both. The challenge with Bannerlord is mainly overcoming its lack of balance in areas such as executing enemy lords.

    this game has fewer options than warband vanilla, so i really dont understand why its so basic, its more like a modding platform than a proper game, at least i expected more after playing better warband mods than bannerlord, honestly, its 6-7/10 max for the lack of viable gameplay options other than battles, all the quests are just repeatable clones, its really pretty sterile world, painful lack of roleplay options, not even enough things to buy when you are in mid game and basicly already have everything, devs should be ashamed that modders make better games basicly

    With the advancements in AI over the last 5 years, I am really excited for Mount and Blade 3.
    Bannerlord was originally advertised as a deep simulation of lords all with their own motives vying for power that would react to each other and the player's actions in varying ways depending on their personality. In reality, every single lord may as well be the same, they barely even react to anything, obviously this is excusable since the technology just wasn't there, but they really shouldn't have overpromised.
    But Mount and Blade 3 will have access to all the latest advancements in technology, everything from AI generated dialogue based on the context of your game and your actions, to novel strategies depending on all the variables of each battle, and AI that can actually participate in diplomacy making strategic marriages and making political decisions to gain more influence by setting themselves goals to get certain titles, fiefs or friendships.
    The only thing that breaks my heart is the fact I'm not healthy enough to see the 2030s, maybe I'll leave £300 to my nephew with explicit instructions to buy Mount and Blade 3 when it releases, he's only just started school, so he should have graduated from university by the time it releases in early access, which will put him right around retirement age by the time it launches out of early access.

  • @CaspianNomad
    @CaspianNomad Рік тому +1

    Overall I'm just disappointed with how shallow the game is. There isn't really anything here that a team of dedicated Warband modders couldn't achieve.
    I at the very least expected features from Viking Conquest to be in this game such as naval batals, raiding and building outposts, which modders even managed to add to Warband. Even the immersion of the world feels less fleshed out than its predecessors, in Warband a great challenge was to be a lowborn female and overcome the prejudice that comes with that.
    As a modding platform its great but unfortunately for the mods every single minor update just breaks their hard work for a while. I'm not buying the rest of the game on DLC packs when even the basegame is so shallow.
    When the game was announced years ago they promised features around raising a family, running a house that made us think it could rival Crusader Kings. They made the sieges look way better than they have turned out to be. Turns out the sieges are only a minor improvement to Warband.
    There are positives but the shortcomings are too many.

This is coming from dude who bought it moment it released in early access, who owns previous games, who is Turkish (like talesworld) So many thing that previous incarnations did better than bannerlord, hell even to last patch we didn't have BANNERS in game. Companion system sucks, they are not memorable, use them trash them. Buy and release them to get rid of them from selection pool. Marriage is joke. Progression too fast and quick. Kill couple of parties of bandit now you can marry King's daughter have own castle or town gifted by next conquest. I miss the time when we start as nothing to basic manhunter to village leader to be lord. Game is easy, to counter that AI cheats a lot. Mods keeping me play this game. But I would like Rimworld size mod support from devs.

      If the devs go in the same direction as Rimworld or X4, they could work on various meaty DLCs that they could sell to greatly expand the game... AND release a free update for each DLC they introduce.

      Combat is improved, Battles are greatly improved, and Sieges don't result in losing 90% of your attacking force to night-time raids, cholera and frostbite before the assault even begins. Those 3 things make this game a much more enjoyable experience to me than Warband, but I agree... many little features that bring life to warband are sadly missing from Bannerlord.
      Here's the thing, though: with enough time and dedication from the devs, BL has the potential to surpass WB in every possible regard, because of its rock solid foundation. Will Taleworlds eventually make this happen? That's up to them.

      I don't mind the presence of Attributes, as they make it impossible for a character to be maxed out in every regard, but I wish they had more of an impact. I'd personally add some special abilities that activate when an attribute reaches 10.
      To give just one example, when you max out vigor, you could gain the Berserk ability, which would increase the melee damage you deal by 50% and lower the damage you take by 50% for 2 minutes. Can only use it once per day. This cooldown would be managed by the addition of a new resource like the "Winds of Magic" in The Old Realms mod...

    Anyhow, what i wanted to comment was that i completely mirror your view on mods towards this game.

    first of all, I'm a huge fan of M&B series. I'm forced to play Bannerlord on PS4 so for now there's a lot of bugs and no mods I think. i even lost around 10h of gameplay due to the infamous sutosave bug. damn that hurt. since it's PS4 any kind of loading takes alooong time. in the same time the battle simulations seem much more fair/easier than in Warband. and because of that i rarely decide to paritcipate in combat at all. playing on a pad makes battles much harder and i'm not even talking about aiming (although you can kind'a auto aim, but it's no bueno) but about controlling the army and so on. so for me it's more of a strategy game now. i'm filthy rich and have a lot of towns. honestly i think the easiest way to get filth ritch is to agro one of the kingdoms, another kingdom should invite you to join them soon enough. the best source of income is not to waste time on caravans, quests or trading but focus cracking sculls. the game seems pretty easy for a person that played Warband many many times over the last ten years. i do enjoy it and i am rly happy that it finally came out. since i'm not a pc user it is kind'a sweet and sour experience to be honest :D thanks for the cool review. best of luck to you Ukzug

      Yeah you should play PS5 if possible, I haven’t had a single bug or save corruption ever, I have 6000 days combined across 3 campaigns, I’ve only ever had like 3-4 crashes.
      I have no problem with hitting headshots with ranged or melee weapons. Issuing commands for formations is a piece of cake.
      It’s above average PC standards, unfortunately It’s a different game for last generation consoles and more worse then were.

    It's great that you point out issues in game as well. From me - conquering town/castle should take much more time and be something big. You know, it's great to have a war but if every war makes you gain 2/3 cities and wars are constant it makes no sense at all. Some diplomatic actions (alliance, no-agression pacts, anything) would be great. Some war preparation as well. Many things could be changed

    • @Centrioless
      @Centrioless Рік тому

      @@nottodaymate6607 maybe i should reword it better. Whats the point of diplomacy if you're still just controling one unit? In order for diplomacy to work "properly", the game needs to be built up from the ground up. You will need to have a total control of your economy, your whole armies, etc.
      Not to mention, theres no end game goal beside map conquest. No economic goal (like x series for example), or building a wonder/science goal (like aoe or civilization). Even games like total war has very limited diplomacy options.
      It baffles me how ppl want crusader kings diplomacy in m&b. In ck, war (the actual content of m&b) is a highly undesirable outcome.
      Besides, most things that you mentioned can be alr done in the game. It feelssss like many of the complaints come from the end game scenario (the whole conspiracy thing), which i agree they need to work on that (altho trchnically its no different from end game scenario in other games).

    Freelancer mod is called "Serve as soldier" now and works with current version of the game. If it isn't in steam workshop you can search for it in nexus mods. Almost every thing you pointed out as flaws is corrected by mods, like diplomacy (allows to make alliances and non attack pacts among other features), improved garrisons, pacemaker (allow to make years and days longer or shorter), RBM (improves AI fighting, tournaments..) and many others including armoury and weaponry addition. It's a bit overwhelming but you can improve the game vastly. Cheers from a new subscriber!

  • @CondemnedGuy

    My main gripe with the game is three-pronged; years are too short, leveling is still too slow in the higher levels, and aging should be thing you can toggle on/off. Playing the game feels like I'm on a timer to min-max everything out of my character.
    I could deal with the first two complaints if there was no timer. If aging is in the game, a year should definitely be 365 days, and you should get an Attribute point for every two or three levels you gain.

    • @Halcylion
      @Halcylion  Рік тому +1

      I personally don't mind the shorter years, because it allows your children to become useful adults faster, and I don't mind aging or dying as it makes the world more dynamic. However, skill development becomes extremely tedious towards the later levels, and you'll often find yourself actively grinding skillpoints instead of actually enjoying the game and gaining them normally.
      And that's AFTER the game improved it greatly. It was a lot worse in the Early Access builds.
      I'd personally add books like in Warband, and when you read a book for a skill, it acts as a sixth focus point, to push the learning limit of a skill even higher. Either that or add a ton of XP for that skill as you read the book.

    The combat is fun even though it's buggy and unrealistic but mid-end game it gets too competitive with constant battles. The game just doesn't make any sense, I don't know what the devs were thinking.
    1. Diplomacy is so bad it's unbelievable. There is no point in marrying your daughter or sister off as there are no matrilineal marriages, they just leave your clan and you don't even get an alliance or a defensive pact out of it, not even a dowry actually most of the time YOU pay to marry your own daughter off to have her leave your clan. If you marry another King's daughter he will still keep declaring war on you it's ridiculous. You literally have to find a lord in person to do diplomacy with them and even then the only options you have is to recruit the clan or trade a few horses, incredibly limited diplomacy options.
    2. You'd think a war would be over after you capture the enemy king and most of their lords but if you want to war to be over even in that situation you would have to pay reparations.
    3. Every culture has the clan system, not just the Aserai, but every single one and even with one system it's not designed well. You have vassal clans constantly trying to declare war on other nations even when you already have 3-4 wars ongoing. If they want to constantly go to war they should not try to drag the whole kingdom into it, only their own clan and other clans they have alliance with influence with and it wouldn't even be that bad if the wars were not so long if you don't want to pay reparations.
    4. The smithing system feels kind of like a mobile game with the energy system, seriously what were the devs thinking.
    5. The skill tree is not designed well and many of the skills are still not working even years later.
    6. The game does have a dynasty system which is fine but then the campaign almost forces you to do a world conquest within one lifetime with the conspiracy questline, the game pacing overall is just too long to really play out a dynasty.

  • @PiepProductions

    I strongly agree with your assessment of diplomacy, especially in regards to truces and tribute. I've had campaigns ruined by every kingdom declaring war on me and demanding tribute, and even if I fight them to the point where I don't pay them anything they immediately redeclare war with their newly freed nobility and demand ridiculous level of tribute. It also wouldn't be so bad if the tribute only applied to the king, but it applies to my vassals as well, so the main way of getting out of the tribute death spiral, making a large army via vassals so they leave you alone, is impossible as the vassals are broke and can't afford armies. You can't even donate money to you vassals to help dig them out of the hole tribute put them in, and like any form of peace outside tribute, or just the presence of truces would eliminate all these issues.
