- 'We Belong To The Night' is the very first song on Ellen Foley's debut album 'Night Out' released in 1979.
I have it on vinyl - if you haven't listened to it in its entirety - I highly, HIGHLY recommend it!
Ellen Foley wrote this song (with Fred Goodman) and it's one of my FAVORITE songs (in general and on the album).
As we all know, Ellen Foley is a truly PHENOMENAL performer, then and now. Singing this felt very important to me because I've always idolized her. I remember (as if it were only yesterday) ;) one of my favorite pastimes after passing my driving test, was taking my car out for a drive and listening to the BOH album. Very often, blasting the music as loudly as possible, just to hear her voice as loudly as I could on some of the numbers. I really appreciate all she has done!

GREAT song! One of the best non-Jim, Jim-like songs sung by Ellen, a true Jim alum. This song IS included on the Sony double-CD release, "Meat Loaf and Friends" (with Ellen, of course, being one of the "friends!") - so I learned of it from that, along with "What's the Matter Baby?" and "Night Out." But, thank you for doing this cover!! 😉

So, we asked for MORE, and whoa(!) did we get it! “We Belong To The Night” isn’t one of Jim Steinman’s “children,” so to speak, but it is a relative - a musical cousin of sorts as it shares the “suck in all the darkness” DNA that hums and thrums and “whistles down” the bloodthirsty veins of Jim’s spectacular works. But the song here is unquestionably secondary to the singer! The lustrous Lauren Bradley swoons and soars and sizzle-storms this cover with maelstrom-force intensity, her pitch-perfect passion soldering a stark, abiding, indelible connection between singer and “sing-ee!” Beaming and glowering simultaneously, Lauren polishes the song to a luminous glow only to instantaneously shred it to pieces with an insane sort of vocalized super-torque. When the dust finally settles, the gates of our “Nocturnalhood” creek open, inviting us to go “nowhere fast” on our way back home - where we should have been by now, “living off sparks” in the blissfully stygian void that shields us from the revelatory light of the lite of our days. Well, I suppose that might not be entirely fair. After all, we do spend the majority of our waking time in the cold light of day, tending to our daily … stuff. And there’s a certain proletarian glory in that to be sure, a mild-mannered majesty, a decorous grandeur alive in the noble pulse of the “everyday.” But still - that’s nothing compared to the native wild that sneaks out after dusk and looses the savagely seductive charms of the night! And when those charms are (borrowing from myself - hahaha! :) “Lauren Bradley-ized” - like they are here when Lauren goes all night-shit crazy on the final “We Belong To The Night” before dissolving into a hauntingly gossamer wooing wail - they rescue us from the pit of the mundane and deliver us to the sanctuary of the dark! Here’s to us, and to our inscrutable enchantment with the night … We’re “faster” than it! We’ve “seized” it! And now we “belong” to it! - -
