I appreciate all of the work they put in during their time in Norway. None of that has to happen today during filming with 21st century technology. Thank you for posting this. I’ve never seen all of this before. I miss Carrie so much. I hope in another 40 years, people still love ESB.
If anyone hasn't seen TESB in a theater, they missed the actual special effects that really took you for a ride, like when they were searching for Han and Luke, combing the mountains, up and down the slopes, the entire Hoth battle, especially when the AT-AT walkers come into frame, the asteroid field chase, etc.! Kershner hit a Grand Slam with this one!!

This documentary beautifully illustrates that Irvin Kershner truly understood Star Wars and respected it. That's why even though Empire is a fantasy, it feels believable and real.
I love seeing behind the scenes stuff like this. It makes you appreciate the final version with all of the visual and audio special effects added. It looks so boring without them and the music too.
This movie was so great because of love for Star Wars by all involved, care and attention to detail, and above all a sense of responsibility to the audience to deliver a product they would love. These things are what's missing in modern films, they want to make propaganda, not entertainment.
I believe that the characters are so ingrained in our culture these days that you can’t watch any of the films without feeling you know them. back in the day in 77 Star Wars introduced me and I went into Empire knowing their relationships. I’m not sure you can get an unbiased review of Empire these days but it is my favorite of the films
I think it's most reasonable to crap on Disney's sequels because they failed to show our friends reunite at least once. Seeing them grow old together would have won a lot of us over.
As a 54 year old SW fan, this very first minute of a 'behind the scene' documentary gives me that specific feeling I had in '77 watching 'A New Hope' on big screen. I was 6 years old when this came out. My Dad took me to see Clash of the Titans (the original with Harry Hamlin) one night and Empire the next. I will never forget the bummed out feeling I had knowing that the "bad guys won" and I needed an immediate resolution. Had to wait 3 years for it...
Hamill's face did change between Star Wars and Empire. I saw him in an interview trying to play down I think the significance of the surgery he had after his car accident but u can definitely see a difference in his face
I remember as kid watching the end of ESB, and being shocked at everything that had just taken place. Finding out Vader was Luke's dad, Luke getting his hand cut off, Han being frozen in carbonite & taken by Boba Fett! Our heroes had just gotten defeated, and we would have to wait 3 years to find out what was going to happen. 3 years is a long time when you're a kid!
This was definitely shown on UK tv back in the day, I remember the bit where they are filming on Hoth in the trench and the director is showing the rebel actor how he wants him to fire the gun - i thought this was cool. Thats all i remember, i cant have been much older than seven.
the director thought even though he took too much time to do empire he'd be lauded for his final work and be asked back for Jedi. but what he didn't know was that George had to mortgage his house and was just about having a heart attack over it.
I guess for the Hoth scenes they used locals for the Rebel infantry and didn’t transport them from the U.K where the rest was filmed? And where in Norway was it shot??
3:50 This documentary is distinguished by an interview with Harrison Ford where he's clearly high. He also speaks about the love triangle and has to laugh because it parallels the real situation with Harrison, Carrie and Mark.
I loved the complexity of the character development and storyline. Episodes 4,5, and 6 are still my favorite of the trilogies. I didn't care much for the prequels. Just not the same without Luke, Leia, and Han. I even missed Darth Vadar in his menacingly cool black costume and helmet.
The greatest Star Wars movie of all times. I honestly think that if Irvine Kershner would have directed Return of the Jedi it would have been better. Return of the Jedi is the second best Star Wars movie of all time.
If the studio had given lucas decent budgets for all 3, imagine how much better these would have been! Even Empire budget was stingy considering how much SW made
Nowadays this would be done in CGI backgrounds and you wonder if the movie would detract. Because of the limitation of ILM and use of traditional techniques, you wonder if this forced people to get creative. Like Phil Tippet doing the walker scenes moving the puppets one cm at a time. Or Ben Burt finding the perfect sound or changing the breathing of Darth Vader to match his speech.
Yeah it was dumb. A lazy way of resolving the romantic rivalry and trying to reproduce the 'stunning revelation' experience of Empire. Many poor decisions in Return of the Jedi.
One possibility is that Alia (A Leia) was Paul's sister in Dune, so maybe that's where it came from. Personally I think the big reveal in Episode III should have been Leia was Obi-Wan's daughter. Now that would be a result of a love triangle!
