    The thing is, Jenny, (and I speak from experience), if you keep working through burnout, your body will shut you down at some point, and then it will take a year or more for you to recover. Something has to give, and you have to rest - the longest to wait, the worse it’s going to e on the long term. I hope you are able to slow down and feel better soon! ❤

      yes. agree 100%. i am suffering from a serious burnout rn and it takes soo long -.- not worth it. take care and listen to your body before it is too late is my advice. balance is everything.

      @@4.eva.21 same here… back in art school after a year of just resting. It honestly suck. Really hope I learned my lesson this time around! It’s har to find a good balance tho. But I working on it and try to listen to my body. It’s hard when you are doing something you love.

      This! If you don't slow down, your body will do it for you and it will take you longer to recover, than taking a break before breakdown.

      Wow, this was so perfectly timed for me to read this. Thank you for this comment !! I was just diagnosed with burnout, I think it's a pretty serious case. I had a breakdown a few weeks ago, and hardly slept for 1.5 weeks due to stress overload. I am now on the road to recovery, and I have a great therapist, but this seems like it's going to take some serious time to heal.

    Loving advice:
    1. Outsource way more! Surround yourself with people who anticipate your needs. Hire another assistant. Up your housekeeper’s hours. Etc.
    2. Take whatever advice David is giving you. He knows.

    Personally, I’ve always enjoyed your & David’s book & film reviews! I’ve been following both f you for many years and appreciate your goals of mindful lifestyle. Wish you much continued success with your next book . Would enjoy seeing more of your outings exploring London seeing cafes, bookstores and wherever your casual strolls take you.

      Hi Jenny, thanks for inviting me into your life week after week. I would love to watch meal content. How to cook like you and maybe some mocktail mixing advice as well.
      For a script I would be interested in an old fashioned detective story with a cool lady detective who is collecting records and taking care of maybe a cool side hustle.
      A personality that has ADHD without a comic element would be great to watch on screen as well. Women with ADHD is a huge thing right now and there are hardly any depiction of a strong neurodivers woman. So go for it!

    Your comments about burnout and how to slow down made me think about Adele’s recent speech at Hollywood Reporter gala. She talked about rejecting the mindset of scarcity of success, and that you don’t have to be constant to be relevant. I would recommend watching it! Good luck in navigating your energy and passion, it’s a constant balance for sure and you’re not alone ❤

    As someone who works my dream job in video games, I feel this so much. I constantly burn myself out working into the late hours because I love my job and I have a really hard time putting it down. I haven’t really found a solution other than to take vacations/ time off and set limits on the amount of time I work per day but it’s not so easy sometimes 😭 All that to say I haven’t figured it out yet either and I’ll be following along with these comments with great interest to find some ideas for myself!

    i love(d) my job too (journalist) and worked and worked and worked. and suddenly my whole system shut down. i had a serious burnout. i am still suffering from it over a year later. the good news: you can prevent it to happen if you listen carefully to the signs your body sends. and even if you feel joy as the strongest feeling. there may be some more quiet messages too besides it. you can feel joy AND a slight tiredness at the same time. or you can be in a flow AND feel hungry and thirsty at the same time (but realising it later ... after hours of working). so my advice: take breaks even though you don't really want to. block some time to do nothing. go take a nap. block it in your calendar. take it as seriously as working. yin and yang is everything.

    The worst part of burnut is when you stop enjoying this thing that you love and that you've poured your heart into. I've started the year in a weird spot, my career is advancing (perhaps slower than I'd imagined) and there are opportunities, but it's been a few rough years economically and that makes me feel both stressed and just generally sad that I can't just enjoy it.
    I'd loooove a film by you guys, when I read Okay Days I was picturing it like a movie all the time, or a series I guess, but it just gave me such cinematic vibes. I can't wait for your second book, I have Okay Days on kindle and it just became available where I live so I'm so excited to get it physically. This calm nook of the internet is wonderful.

    I burnt out working in academia. I always loved my job, like you, but I overdid it so much and ended up hating it. Don't ignore the signs. Slowing down doesn't mean stop doing what you love. Just do it at a quieter pace. Learning to say no is a first good step.

    I had horrible burnout for years. I didn't feel myself again until 6 months of not working. I didn't like my career, so now I'm doing something different gradually as I go along. Your body will eventually force you to do it anyway. Take a break. Drop some things. Most important is your health.

    Wrote a script with my partner during covid. Netflix didn't choose it (it was a Canadian competition) but always a fun and learning process to create together---we also run our businesses together.

    I think you guys did the right thing by taking a vacation that helps with burn out. I know it does with me it forces me to actually relax and not work. Also, just those little things throughout the day like pausing. I do meditation for a stretch or a workout. Or I’ll even read my book and just take those little breaks in between. I also love going for a walks. ❤

    Hi Jenny, I do not comment alot on videos, but I think I have something to add to the burnout conversation. I know how you can love your job so much it can become very painful. I am a researcher, it seems very similar in way. My advice would be to diversify your interests. It might seem counter-intuitive, but your grip on one identity (eg., being a successful novelist) will soften when you have a broader portfolio of things you care about deeply. For me, I became a gardener and got into knitting. I dont know what it could be for you but I am still hoping that you guys become dog owners 😊

    Your video touched my heart right here right now. I'm a makeup artist and 2022/2023 were so overbooked with weddings that I felt I can't do it anymore! This year, I took half of the bookings I'd normally do. I'm stressed about money as mortgage is a real thing but at the same time, I need TIME to walk my dogs, read another book, meet a friend for coffee and do nothing. I'm worried about loosing bookings, not being busy enough however I'm just like you, I ADORE my JOB! Absolutely love it and that's why it is so hard to slow down...worth trying though❤

    Hi Jenny. Thank you for being honest and open about your struggles and triumphs. I am currently in my last year of university and I can feel the burnout creeping up.     I loved Uni and my major...I did my MA course within a year, even though it usually takes two. I've never been more productive, but after I held my degree in my hands the burn out broke out over me and the recovery has been one of the hardest things in my life. The mental and physical strain, the struggle to move on and have energy for new projects again, it's definitely something. Working on my novel helped to a little bit, but in the end slowing down and only slowly adding more things to my plate have been the only thing that helped. I'm lucky that I have some financial security and don't have to work full-time and use my time for writing and resting, but not everyone is as fortunate. But my hopes are with 2024, I've been feeling a lot better and I can see myself 'returning' to more normal life again.

    I feel very similar, but not because of overwork but because of my health. I'm always incredibly tired and could only sleep. I have various symptoms that make me feel like I should work less. But that's not possible, not even financially. I now try to pay attention to simple things: healthy food, lots of vegetables. Drink enough. Relax and do nothing. Plan 9 hours of sleep. Hope that helps. I also try to avoid screens after work, except for my eReader. Stay healthy!

    In the course of burnout, the slight change in my mindset helped me come out of it easily. Think of slowing down as a preparation for more productive and happier days. Something that doesn't seem like essential, but I promise it would be the best choice.
    Also, think about being more mindful about your emotions. For me, it came out that I am not doing well with my anger. So, I studied my shortcomings, and my lack of energy was eliminated soon after that.

    I'm an Enneagram coach, and I find that personality (or ego or type) plays a huge role in the "why" of overworking. People do it for so many varied and nuanced reasons. The way to find healthy patterns lies in digging deeper, to find the exact reasons why you particularly work too much. It can be for positive or negative reasons, and we use type to help the ego relax and be open to new ways of living!

    Ugh Ive been in constant burnouts in my entire adulthood and the longest lasted for 3 years but it might change due to medication for my pretty new diagnose add so fingers crossed!

    I don't know if this will resonate, but within my own creative work, giving myself the freedom to "fail" and even just redefining my idea of success to broaden my understanding of my path through life as an independent creative business owner has been major. I can't control every door that will or will not open, so understanding that sometimes a closed door is better than an open one gives me a bit more freedom from the pressures of immediate progress or approval.

    Hi Jenny! I thought the whole burn out due to work in what is interesting to you is a good topic to follow up upon. I am having the same struggles and do far I have limited success on limiting my hours. I understood the secret is to schedule in your day to do things you love and that relax you. Haven't managed it myself though. Maybe a video with all of this advice from the comments would help those of us that struggle with the same as you. Just an idea.

    I’m excited to read your first book! I would say the best thing to do with ALL the anxiety and stress is acknowledge it and give yourself days in the week to just breathe/recover/self care. Practice knowing and loving yourself for being a sensitive, anxious person; embrace the chaos but know any feeling is not finite as your life unfolds. I love getting to see your love of reading but I would love to see a video on how or why you write! ✨ thank you for such lovely content !

Having been through a large renovation last year myself I feel similarly depleted, it’s taking some time to get back to normal after the drama (we had similar tensions unfortunately, they seem unavoidable when you have high standards).     I know this all too well. I feel like it's all about pacing yourself. You have to force yourself to rest regularly and look for balance instead of going overboard. It's like eating a delicious meal but instead of overindulging on it you eat until you're just about full haha. Frustrating but worth it trust me !
    The thing that helps me is knowing that the sporadic resting time you take now is so much less than the time you'd need to take off if you end up in burn out again. 💔
    Also you really need to embrace rest and quiet, they are important for your work. I know there are always things waiting for us outside but we need to fight the urge to go overboard and learn to embrace slowing down as much as we can. It's addictive but burnout leaves scars and isn't worth going through it again.

    Choosing doesn't always mean 'not doing it', it's about prioritisation. Our number one job/ task is actually ourselves: this body, this brain, this soul. Unless somebody takes that task off your plate magically, I think it's about rethinking prioritisation... After all, life is a marathon, not a sprint. Take care ❤

    I had a really bad burnout, the thing is i did some blode exams and my ginecologis told me my cels are consuming because of the burnout. She gave me vitamins, also ask me to do a relaxing thing. Walk has work for me, the vitamins too. Hope you find a way to do less and get better.

    Hi Jenny! Thank you for being so honest and openhearted in this video, I find you have such a sincere energy around you which just lights up the room (or my phone in this case haha). Sorry to hear about your struggles with burnout. Some thought I had on this (having been there myself): have you ever considered the possibility that you are a highly sensitive person? I never had, but finding out and accepting this has helped me tremendously in managing my energylevels. I can also get lost in doing things I enjoy while not being mindful of how it impacts my energylevel or just my physical, mental or emotional state. I also say this because you mentioned your aversion to conflict and tension which I find very recognisable. Anyway, wishing you lots of wisdom in these times! Love from the Netherlands

And the trees you're having right outside, damn! ❤ About your projects: you and David making a movie together sounds so legit that it's surely going to happen.     Sending you all the best vibes - I do not have good advise being on a verge of burnout myself but I do believe you will find a way to figure it out! I also do not tolerate stress and tension very well and it does not help in moving forward and achieving large goals but self-awareness is the first step and makes it easier to work around it. Can't wait to read your next book - the last one was in my top 5 last year.

    I watch another person from Sweden here on UA-cam, and I must admit that you radiate incredible peace. The second thing I like about you is your respect for nature, that you are guests when you enter the forest in the morning, and you are careful not to wake up the animals.:) In terms of money, due to the spreading of poverty, governments should, in my opinion, introduce a minimum income to meet people's basic needs. This is a global problem at the moment.

    `I sympathize with the burnout issue, as I worked 7 days a week for a long time supporting my 2 children and myself after a divorce. I have a master's in education, taught full-time w. teens, 4 evenings in adult ed, and waitressed weekends. One day waitressing I stood in the kitchen to give an order and my mind blanked, I was so exhausted. The stress led to a heart condition. So, take any break you need. You have a lovely home, lots of talent, and a great relationship. Those are priorities. BTW, I am now elderly and married 10 years to someone similar to David, my wonderful children have families and I have 6 grandchildren.

    Would love an updated wardrobe your 😊 for some reason I imagine it’s not as minimalist as it times past and it’s a bit more luxurious instead, but no judgement here at all I just find your style so inspiring!!!     i'm a little late to this video, but it's true that especially people who love their work because it is fulfilling / connects to their identity and values etc. tend to burn themselves out more often. i see this so much in the creative field and people who work freelance or project-based (i am studying to become a documentary filmmaker, so you can already guess that i'm throwing myself into it with all my heart and soul - i am definitely in danger of a similar type of burnout, too). i have the feeling as someone only starting out in this field that it is a livelong lesson to learn. it's about finding balance

    I'm currently outlining my first screenplay, started in December. At this stage, I'm finding Naomi Beaty's Screenplay Outline Workbook to be really helpful. Instead of post its, I used index cards (technique from another screenplay book) to briefly outline each scene and then put them in order. Just starting to read software reviews now as I will start on my first draft in March.

    Would love to see my routine, food and minimalism videos. I know you have done loads of these already but I love them! Love your lifestyle videos and you and David have such a great relationship that maybe a video on creating a successful relationship would be nice /lessons learnt etc. Anyway, I love all your videos!!

    You probably know this and have tried it already, but setting a clock off time everyday is very important. Setting an alarm to remind you that it's time to log off for the day. Even give yourself a 15 or 30 minute warning notification so you have time to wrap up for the day.
    I have everything crossed for your next novel! I have Okay Days on the desk beside me as I type this 😊❤
    As for the cost of living, yes we are definitely feeling it! We thought we were doing alright, but we were down to the wire before payday rolled around last Friday. The next month looks pretty tight too while we try to rebalance after the festivities and some January birthdays.
    You podcast is one of my favourites. I must go back and relisten to some to keep me topped up :) Definitely something for the back burner while you get yourself back up to speed.

    Thank you so much to be honest and an advocate for mental health! I feel like : my favorite vlogguer had a burnout, so this is something that happens to many of us and it's ok to take care of our mental health...this is not a loser thing, it is just life happening, especially when we are very passionnate about what we do!

    I have written about 5 film scripts - 2 were optioned but ultimately not produced. 1) Remember, scripts were written on typewriters and even notebook paper- the best program is the one YOU can stick with. Having said that, Final Draft is the absolute best with in app notecards and collaborative features. 2) There is ALWAYS something with owning an apartment or home! I redid the ground floor of my home during the pandemic, but now it's time to replace the roof! WHEW- it's pricey! 3) Cost of living issues are crazy, and things can feel just out of reach. 4) There is nothing wrong with resting- rest can be liberation!

    I'm a veteran when it comes to burn out. It's difficult to say exactly what someone else should do, because everyones blueprint is different. Burnout hits us in different ways. Usually it has to do with too much "doing". We are human-beings not human-doings. For me - I had always put my achievements highest. Do some meditations, walks or similar and ask yourself exactly what it is that burns you out. Physically it usually hits the thyroid or the supra-adrenals/adrenals... maybe visit an alternative health practicioner.

    Pacing is a good strategy to going through burnout and create a good and healthy lifestyle afterwards. Otherwise resting is the only way that can recharge your batteries completely. But that's not always possible in reality. All the best 😊

    I am in a deeper depression than ever because i turned 40 a couple dags ago. Born 1984. Society says i am Old now and since i am over 40 now i am grouped with all other age groups over 40 i have nothing in common with.

      I turned 50 last year and am having the hardest time with it and all that happens to women over 50. I hit burnout last summer and haven’t quite recovered yet.

      @@reneehaug1467 i understand so did my mom when she did, you need to take Care of yourself. My gen seems to treat 40 as nothing but older gens still uphold it in Every comment section when someone mentions turning 40. All of us should target this as us millenials can’t do it on our own

      @@mirabilis999 Exactly! I'm 47 an have never felt more vibrant. Also! The number of folks over 100 has doubled in the #s over the past 20 years! From that perspective, 40 is quite young!

    i am a writer also in a creative job and the burnout is so real i think especially if you're trying to do your own creative work, after a full day of being a creative for hire, if that makes sense? i have found that making small rituals out of things like my daily shower (lights down low, a candle maybe, music, nice soap) has helped so so much with both slowing down and also making sure im still taking care of myself, and putting something a bit magical back into my mind/body/spirit, that grounds me

      but in order to come to that realisation and then implement those rituals, i initially was able to take a couple of weeks to rest as well

    when i was young like you, i also LOVED working to excess. it was FUN. what i did was, look at my week and pick out the LEAST favorite things. stupid things like dusting, mopping, changing the sheets, ironing, laundry, doing dishes(which 30 years LATER i love!) can be delegated to people who NEED a job. maybe it is a personal assistant to do all the things that in THIS season of life are lower on your JOY SCALE? look at your calendar and pick out the things that you would not MIND letting someone else do. this SEASON of LIFE is not forever. ENJOY the work.....

    Of course the obvious thing is why not put OK Days into a screenplay. There would probably be some adjustments and cuts but it's a great modern love story.

    Jenny, 50% is much better than zero. Work life balance is a concept we chase while denying reality. Take care of yourself. If you are acknowledging burnout, you are asking for permission to slow down or take a much needed break. Allow yourself the gift of listening to your inner voice. Your beautiful work cannot be done without beautiful you. Much love to you and David.

    Some tips for your burnout: Prioritize yur health - clear out everything you don't "have to" do and prioritize the ones you "need" to do.
    Set boundaries and stick to them. It's OK to say NO.
    Don't get distracted by new projects you don't have time/energy for.
    Take mini-breaks during the day - set the clock and really do them. Can be a short meditation, a breathing break or just a reflection on what you are doing/thinking/feeling at that moment.
    Also take slightly longer breaks during the day for a walk or meditation.
    I can really relate to the rebuilding issues both the financial and emotional aspects.
    Having a supportive partner is really so wonderful. Give him some extra love.

    Hey Jenny,
    On burnout i can speak from experience, like perhaps most people who respond here on this video.
    You could ask yourself deeply what rest means to you and after which activities you feel most rejuvenated. Then scedule enough time doing these energizing and restful activities. Walking perhaps or taking a bath or cuddling or talking to a good friend or dancing.
    Keep asking yourself what you really need to take good care of yourself. Over and over again.
    Also i would suggest a week-long retreat (or longer if you need to) from all your information-intake. No reading, no podcasts, no television or film or social media. Then you'll find much more creative and social energy coming back to you. and it's good for your brain too, some rest. :) I just did this myself and the change is very big and good, much more space in my mind and better concentration. This was a tip from the book 'The artist's way'.

    I’d love a meet and greet in the future, I’d travel to London to get to chat with you. For video recommendations, I’d love more writing and architecture videos, I still go back to your older office tour/architecture videos haha.
    Also, what to see and eat in all the places you’ve been, or maybe your language learning journey, since you mentioned a while ago that you’ve been learning French.
    Thanks as always for your videos (this extends to David too haha). I often feel burnout because of my economic and living situations, your videos/community are sunny rays in my days.

    Well, I use to work a lot before. I’m passionately about want I do - create events and projects. But I choose back in 2014 to change my work life, because I miss having friends and a social life. I was so burn out back then - but I knew that I have that make changes - and I didn’t for me no one else. I still work in same field and really love want I do. Now my job is a part of my life no all me life..

    Life is full of choices and everything can't be a priority. My suggestion is to prioritize your health because without it there are so many things you won't be able to do.

    A healthy work life balance tip: get a hobby that is only for you that you don't try to profit off of and you don't talk about online. Take up knitting or something. Something that is sacred and only belongs to you.

    Oh, I have just started saving money to move to Norway in couple of years (if everything goes close to the plan I have hahaha), but the last 2 years have completely drained my budget, so was a hard time.. now not much better as I still don’t have a stable job, and life expenses are really high now..

    I completely get what you mean about the burnout. I work as a social media manager and I completely love my work, but I also live with chronic illness and with chronic pain and chronic fatigue and everything and I have to deal with medical appointments and medical bills and medical paperwork. so I often burn myself out taking all these extra tasks outside of work in social media and then I’m also full-time ill and disabled so I don’t really know how to deal with that and to slow down because I love my life so much but then often I get so sick my body just stops functioning. So I don’t really have advice just wanted to say I’m in the same boat and I know what you’re going through so if you have some really good advice please share because I think you would be able to help a lot of people. I don’t think this is a side of burnout people talk about Enough, so thank you for speaking about being burned out even though you’re living your best life and I hope you will find a solution to get through it. Thanks for being you and speaking so openly about everything 🎀

    I also love my work and it's hard to switch off. I work in film and TV and for me it's more than a job, it's my life's passion. When I'm not at work, I work on my own projects. It can feel exhausting and draining. Anyways, it's cool that you are writing a screenplay :) Best program to use is probably Final Draft. Would love to chat tips about screenwriting! Happy writing 😊

    No answers, sadly, but I see my daughter doing this constantly. She works hard and plays hard then crashes. She also has terrible anxiety. Not depression. She admits her busyness is a way of stopping hearing her own thoughts. Sertraline has helped her stabilise hugely, but I appreciate what works for one doesn’t work for everyone. She is also a psychologist so you can imagine, talking therapies don’t really work as she is constantly questioning the counsellors. She recently discovered crafts to distract herself instead, which is more relaxing than being on the go all the time. Just a few thoughts for you. Good luck.

    Hi Jenny, as you've asked for advice on burnout, I'll give you some advice based on my experience. As others have said, you need to take rest because the more you let the burnout go on, the worse it will get until you can't do anything anymore for a while. I would advise you to make sure you get all the sleep, more than you're doing now. Seeing a therapist can make a world of difference too. Sometimes you think you're fine, until suddenly you find out nothing is fine. With burning yourself out, you will discover that nothing is fine iwhen it is already to late. On the basis of your short explanation, it feels to like you might be resisting and somewhat ignoring what you already know. Stop pushing yourself, drop activities that aren't absolutely necessary and that do'nt give you energy. Start nurturing yourself and do things that make you feel calm or give you genuine joy (and the energy flows from that).
    I hope that all the advice from your followers gives you some valuable insights and that you find yourself in a better headspace again with time!

    I ignored my college "I wanna do this! I HAVE to do this! This is so fun and so exhausting" burnout so long that when my brain finally couldn't take it anymore, I literally stopped being able to function for two years. I'm just now recovering from it, and oh boy, am I a completely different person than I was pre-breakdown. What I'm trying to say is, yes, it's awesome that you are doing things that are fun, but you seriously want to cut down the workload and rest before your body and mind decide to enforce that on you. All the fun in the world is not worth a complete collapse. Get your rest, girl ♥

    for my work/life balance: my time off is s a c r e d . when the workday is done, i stop. if it is not a workday, i don't even dabble. additionally, i sleep in until *noon* on one of my two days off. exceptions are rare. when i do make them i can feel it.

    With regard to burnout, would you consider extending your Plan Nothing Days to two days per week? That way you’re not really going part time to 50%. Perhaps Sundays (I believe this is already your set day) and Wednesdays to spread them out?
    Yes!!! Please write more books and write screenplay!! 🥰 I feel that Okay Days should be made into a film!

    The money struggle is real...my bf makes a decent salary, but we feel like we're still struggling due to all the inflation. Somehow, we're finding ways to enjoy life despite all the craziness. I feel quite burnt out lately, so I'm trying to be more mindful and slowing wayyy down. Honestly, you guys are suchhh a joy to watch since I found your channel(s) back in 2021/22 💖I am LOVING "Okay Days," so ofc I will support the next book, film, whatever you guys make. ✨✨

    no advice here, unfortunately. I have found myself so overwhelmed and exhausted because of work, that I have stopped looking after my own basic needs. and not just the obvious - no social occasions, less chill times, but really basic needs. just this last Thursday I realized I had no food in the fridge and no energy or time to go buy things, I had to work later that night and Friday as well. my work made me neglect myself at this level! today is Saturday at 9 pm and it is only minutes go I got my groceries so I can actually eat something that is not stale bread. just one of the examples of how the life of an exhausted overworked yet very ambitious woman can be. what I am trying to say, I empathize. sending my best wishes for you to recover, get back your equilibrium, and shine.

    I'm a happy workaholic but it has come at a huge cost. My health declined a lot. I have hypertension, and it really affected me physically. Sometimes you have to pause and make time for yourself. Maybe it's an hour, or a half day or whole day. And use the time rest.

    I’m so curious about the breakdown for your day - hour by hour-7days / week. I’m so curious because it seems like you have sooo much time! How do you read so many books in your free time? Write your own book? Podcast? UA-cam? Cook? Eat? Exercise ? Relationships ? Home chores ? I’m so curious how you do it allll! I guess this is where burn out comes into play but I don’t know how you even squeeze it all in
