    Additional thoughts from my chief flight instructor Dennis about "Real Time" radar imagery and flying into AirVenture:
    Regarding the radar: XM or Stratus radar is not only NOT real time, it can be delayed by as much as 20 minutes…and on some APPS there is NO timer telling you how old the data is. ALSO, because of bandwidth limitations, The image is very pixelated, probably less than 1/10th the resolution of an on board radar. When you use Stratus, it’s four to six times more coarse than XM. The common phrase is : onboard radar can be used tactically, but XM and others only strategically. In other words, don’t use anything but onboard radar to thread through bad weather.
    Over all comments:
    1. EYES OPEN, MOUTH CLOSED…way too much chatter at the last critical miles
    2. EYES on your own territory. There's no point for everyone to be looking everywhere, you take the right front corner, Alden the left, ZAN checks six and the rear quarters…and the six ain't that important.
    3. Any day is a good day to go to OSH but its fun to get there early so you can get a good spot and watch others arrive…sometimes that’s the best part of the show. Also if its busy and you arrive late, you may not even be allowed in…you’ll have to park in Appleton or some other satellite airport.

    FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
    I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

    My late father and I flew from St. Louis into Oshkosh airshow twice, once in a Cherokee 160 and once in his '48 Bonanza. We had to stop at fondulac to wait for airshow to finish up on one of the trips. Most exciting flights we ever made. Ill never forget the P-51 landing long coming over the top of us. My father passed away in Jan of this year and I really miss him badly. Thanks for the video Flightchops , brought back great memories.

    Love it! I flew in a couple of times just for the experience, but I live only about an hour drive away, that's usually easier. Always interesting to see videos of people flying the OSH arrival over an area that I fly around the rest of the year.

    Sometimes I forget how spoiled I was going to flight school at Oshkosh. The airport comes to life in the most vivid way imaginable two weeks out of the year. After flying in Wisconsin for the past 8 years though I wanted a different change of pace & moved to Augusta, GA for a chief CFI position. The Masters Golf Tournament is in two weeks but the traffic volume won't be anywhere near as dense as Airventure. Oh, and South Bend I think has THE most comfy chairs any pilot lounge I've been to.

    I flew in as a passenger in a Cherokee Six in 1981. Very busy, very crowded, but very efficient. I had a private at the time, but was not PIC for this trip. Fun to watch this vid and remember how intense it was, and how much fun the whole week was ! Thanks for posting !

    I've got a cool story about the controller who welcomed me to Oshkosh '15 and had me rock my wings. I recognised his voice six months later flying over Jacksonville, and we ended up trading email addresses. he's doing sun n' fun, and he's giving us a "behind the flightline" tour this year.

      Try training in KFRG. It has a average of over 500 aircraft a day and nestled close to LGA,JFK,and EWR along with all the planes flying in from Europe all on approach about 8000 feet above you. God it's interesting.

  • @BeselerSimRacing

    I'll tell you working at an FBO that is within 1 hour flying time to KOSH on the weekend before it officially opens is a blast. I've worked line for almost 10 years and I love it. Of course I work the Saturday and Sunday before it opens and then Sunday I blast off and head on over.
    To those that are thinking about flying into Oshkosh, plan ahead. Plan well ahead. Study the NOTAM, reading it the night before is not a good practice. Also, know the other airports in the area just in case KOSH is closed or is turning away people. Be calm but be alert.
    As a line guy I can tell you I've seen people on their way to KOSH land at our airport with their gear still up. I've seen people taxi in with missing fuel caps (guy forgot to put the cap back on at his last fuel stop, it was self service). Someone even took off with their tie down rope still underneath the wing somehow.

    I was at IRCHA 2011, in Muncie IN and Saturday night we got hit by one of the most impressive squall lines I have ever seen. It was the same one that flipped the stage at the SugarLand Concert 45 minutes earlier. Have to say the light show was impressive to say the least and it was moving between 50-70 mph. Glad I was on the ground. That part of the country can get some pretty wicked thunder storms.

    Meeting some place to make a flight of 2 or more could work better for you. That flight of 8 landing before you must of had some fun. Actually a video on coordinating things in a flight of 2 or more would be nice for those that have never tried it. Works good for getting out of busy airports preventing getting separated and reduces waiting for departure times for others..

    Pretty Neat! I was actually at Fisk Ground control. I remember calling out the Ercoupe flight of 8 coming down the tracks. Quick question, how visible is the Fisk trailer from the sky? There are bright LED lights on the trailer so that pilots can see the "Fisk tower". Cool to see the journey!

I don't remember seeing the trailer in real life - I was busy looking for traffic, and then after I was like, damn, I meant to look for that trailer - I think I can pick it out in the footage, it is pretty small though.

      +FlightChops I'm glad you mentioned it, but even so, I kept thinking "geez you guys, shut up!". But I can totally see myself doing the same thing. I'll learn from you :-)
      Really looking forward to my first trip to AirVenture this year!

    Holy shit the ATC was fast. They could probably even give the ATC at JFK or LHR a run for their money.

      +Dave Jones - haha - yes fair enough - but do I get 10/10 for being a good safety pilot? That was my main concern. Also, if you'd like to see the Osh arrival and our Orange Dot landing with out the ATC audio from the over the shoulder cam, I might share that one privately...

    You TAXIED into an enclosed hangar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you ever consider what your prop blast might do to other aircraft, raising dust on the floor and covering everything in sight? If you're ever in that much of a hurry then the proper way to do it is to kill the engine before you enter and coast over the threshold.

    Funny seeing my home airport on your flight plan KARR. Did you land or just go direct to Oshkosh?

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  8 років тому

      +Daniel Waters didn't land there - just over flew. would have liked to visit my friend Jared who is based there too, but at that point were were already 2 days behind our proposed schedule.

      +FlightChops I see. You should come back and take a trip down the skyline, if you haven't all ready! It's a view like no other! Just have to stay under the Class Bravo!

    Do those cells pop up quite a bit due to the great lakes?

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  8 років тому +1

      +andrewdoyle88 - In this case it was several powerful cold fronts that came through back to back (if I remember correctly). You can see the shape of the fronts curving as they rotate around the big low pressure system that was to the north. But yes, the moist air from the great lakes provides a great deal of fuel for a cold front to sweep up into the higher altitudes and build squall lines.
