The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

I missed the live. I am from Bangladesh and i am doing your 30 video course. I already feel calmed down. I just finished taking extensive notes of video 3. I have seen a few therapiists on the net, and I believe you are the one I finally am sticking to, with commitment. I find you have an authenticity, a simplicity and a compassion in you which really pulls me!! I really appreciate you, Emma, and please keep this way! You truly are an inspiration and an example!

I am a writer and I wrote a funny article “45 therapists and counting” but there is truth behind it because I’ve probably seen 60 psychiatrists and therapists of different varieties. All together two have helped me. But now it’s three because of you! Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for being here and giving out so much info! I've been struggling a lot, but I haven't been able to get a therapist. I tried online, and I found someone in REAL life but it seems like they are all booked. Everything is going to shit. Not only that but I have this gum soreness, it's not bad but I know what it signifies. I'm annoyed at life, annoyed and suicidal. going to watch more of your videos and self-theraputize myself, I cant wait to see the 7 other videos in part with "how to create the life you want" - that's all I want, but it seems like life doesn't want me to get a therapist either. And ill either die trying (literally) or ill grow stronger living

Ty for explaining so well the power struggle with the anxiety loop tuned agoraphobia with PTSD and CPTSD. Its torture what we put ourselves through! therapists need to identify this and provide education and techniques! 5 therapist over 2 years wasting money and time with all the obvious signs and symptoms provided, I STILL had to learn how to treat myself before i became homeless over this!
THANK YOU for making this simple & clear for us to have a roadmap for high anxiety nervous system take overs!! Bring on the course!!!

First, thank you. I come here often to feel comfort and watch all your other videos when I’m going through it badly. I play your videos over n over and even helps me fall asleep listening to you.
My anxiety and health anxiety is ruining me. The bad thing is I do have some health issues that when I feel the symptoms it won’t leave my mind. My headaches or palpitations usually trigger my spiral. I always feel lightheaded, nauseous and I end up needing to use the bathroom. (On a good note it clears me out lol)
I am trying to use the tools you shared but feeling health symptoms daily makes it so hard to be positive. Sometimes I can curb the amnesty attacks but sometimes it takes its own route and disregards my efforts.
    But I’m trying😒😒😒

Having been a long time Emma beneficiary to ‘finally’ life altering information, I looked forward to this event, and had my comment ready, that then it wouldn’t send. Sorry I missed this. With a stress disorder, I constantly recondition my responses with every social contact. I do better by avoiding social contact. This fetches up in depression so it's not much of a fix. So I am either down on others or down on myself, which does not make for a very happy life. I have a degree in fine arts, but I have stopped producing artwork. Artwork pushes me into social situations that I outright hate. Being a failure at my one great talent has my parents, siblings, kids, grandkids, and friends very disappointed in me. At this point in my life it is just me and God. You are the first mental health professional who will not try to convince me that there is no God.

My sister had agoraphobia pretty much her entire life. I was ok. In 2020 just before things started to shut down with Covid-19, I lost her on hospice to severe protein malnutrition. We had lived all but 11 of her 63 years together. She had some mental handicaps and later physical handicaps. I have some physical limitations and was not strong enough to take care of her then, so I had to place her in a skilled facility. It was a very nice and caring place better than most other such places. They did provide good and balanced meals.
Nancy got to a point where a deep, intense lingering grief from our father's death in 1997 was too great and she just ate less and less and declined rapidly. There may also have been a GI problem.
When Covid hit and things went virtual, I decided to leave my church and find a new one. I was not happy as some of the teachings were changing. I have always been a very active church member. Right now I claim a church close to me as my church, but I have still never set foot in it. I just regularly participate online. I know that is crazy. Each Saturday night I go to bed with full intentions of getting up Sunday and going, but each week I chicken out and watch the live stream.
Part could be my foolish decision to get dentures almost two years ago. Even after several relines I have never been able to eat even mashed potatoes without the lowers taking flight no matter the adhesive. Everything social has food. I may be the only person happy to wear a mask because it covers the fact that I don't have any teeth.
I have everything delivered. I do not go shopping. If I get anything out, it is drive-through.
The only time I leave my house is to go to work. It is pretty much a safe place because I have worked with most of these people since the very beginning when we opened. The problem is that it is a hospice house. I am the evening Administrative Assistant. I don't deal with the patients, but I do with the families. One or more people die there every day. Until my sister died on hospice at her nursing home, I viewed working there as a way to help people in their difficult moments as well as helping my clinical staff. I discovered after Nancy's death that there are no support groups for loss of an adult sibling. You are just alone....especially when you have no family support either. As patients were admitted with a sibling as their contact person, it would break my heart more. I knew ahead was the loss and grief and a void of external support. The emotional toll is getting more and more difficult. I know for my mental health I need to make a change. I even have an interview coming up with another hospital. I am very anxious about it. The position may not even actually exist yet either. I was first contacted for an early morning job. I have never been a morning person. Now after five years of working evenings I don't think I could physically go back to days. I declined that spot. They contacted me again and said they might have an evening position coming up.
I am heavily relied upon at my job for my extreme attention to details, because I like nights when no other admin does, and that I offer my entire clinical and non-clinical staff 24/7 tech support gladly of my own free will. I have been given extra assignments from our home hospice team to track all of their paperwork so nothing is missing or incorrect that could result in a claim being denied. My day partner says he is overwhelmed by this report but he has not done one thing to even try to help. I am the only one with the right to be overwhelmed. One day I worked 15 hours instead of my usual 8. Some managment is changing and our best clinical staff is being recruited away and promoted to other area of the hospital. Yet in leaving who knows what the environment would be.
If I could afford to retire (I will be 68 in a few weeks), I just might. But then I wonder if I would just really curl up into nothingness with only me and the two cats.
I am going to go back to the dentist in early June to try to get my permanent dentures and hope they will fit well enough to allow me to eat even some basic things, and to be able to talk with them all day without the lowers coming loose at some point. If it works maybe that will help some. I would really love to have a salad and other fruits and vegetables. I have not been able to gum those. Some meats, cereals, pastas, deep dish pizza, mashed potatoes, etc has been all. I have lost almost 40 lbs. I don't really have an appetite. Not having any appetite, limited things I can eat and deep depression, I have wondered if I am headed out the same way as Nancy. She was my whole purpose in life. Loving her and taking care of her was my life. Now it's just empty. I just want to stay at home with the cats and be content with a couple of bowls of cereal a day...I am actually content with that.

I wish I hadn’t missed this live stream. I have a driving fear of highways and driving over long highway bridges over water. I cannot see my family unless I drive over a bridge any of the bridges that go across to see them. I have been working with this one therapist since 2018 and it helped at first. I moved closer to them but not on the other side of the bridge yet due to my job requirements for distance. I didn’t have a full panic attack till august of 2021 but haven’t stopped treatment but it’s virtual now. At least my worst fear of having a seizure didn’t happen because I said stop over and over out loud till I was off the bridge.btw I have epilepsy but never had a seizure in all the 25 years or more since I have been driving.

But very nervous about my kids going back to school, and about breakthrough cases, long Covid, losing sense of taste forever, etc. I am trying to control what I can, but I am having trouble living thru this pandemic. Have lots of trouble sleeping at night🌷💐

It's great to do a Q&A. I hope you do it again. But maybe you could go back to the recording afterwards and timestamp the key questions you cover. This is particularly useful if it is a long video.

Here is why exposure therapy does not work for some agoraphobics. First of all as of 2023 the literature that I have read states that agoraphobia is not a fear of leaving the house, that is a common misconception. The fear is more about having a panic attack or severe anxiety in any given situation, such as being trapped in an elevator, public transportation, driving long, distances, alone, or even with others, and fearing that you were going to have a panic attack. Just learning that much about agoraphobia has helped me focus on what I need to work on more than all of the talk therapy. I’ve had in the last 20 years. the second aspect to this is that some of us with agoraphobia have a tempted time and time again to confront our fears to go out and face our fears, which still come up, and still cause panic. Instead of leaving that situation with the feeling of victory, like saying, I did it, and this lessons,, or feeling less that it lessons my fair , some of us get caught in a guilt, shame spiral. For me personally, I have no idea why my body chooses to go into panic or anxiety in certain situations, and I therefore continue to blame myself, to beat myself up, and to allow others to beat me up mentally. Because if I tell them about my anxiety, they do not understand it and since I can’t understand it, and I can’t explain it. It becomes a battle. Since I am at the center of the problem, let’s say I avoid going to a destination wedding, and then I am known as the one that just never shows up because I don’t care enough, I can say to myself, I can see how people would think that, however I can’t fault them, but I can fault myself. So not only does desensitization not work for some of us, it makes things far worse. It is also illogical to try to cure panic by going on a plane, traveling, long distance, getting on an elevator, doing any of the several things that caused us panic . It is just not a realistic way to deal with agoraphobia. I am choosing right now to work through a book on cognitive therapy that talks about agoraphobia and how to change your thinking or rewire your thoughts. I understand that this goes very deep and this is not going to be easy and probably not pleasant, however nothing is worse than the panic and anxiety one feels when they are out in the panic inducing situation, which, by the way, sometimes comes out of nowhere, and again you’re left feeling like you failed again, and you don’t know why. Keep this in mind. If you have a child or a pet who is so ill that you’re not sure what the outcome will be of this illness, but you are aware that it could be death, and it could be extremely painful, try telling you her self to do exposure therapy so that you feel better. Not only is it not going to happen, this is the ceiling that I have when someone says just do it, or take baby steps. Some thing is not working with this system, or paradigm of telling people with agoraphobia to do desensitization or exposure therapy.

(even when my therapist is little detracts, i can understand it cognitive, but my emotions don't 😄). Thank you Emma ❤️
