This was actually the first character I fully made in Dungeons & Dragons. However , the campaign fell apart before it could even begin, The idea was a former thief who now has to work on the opposite side of the law to figure out who Set him up when a job went wrong
Yeah one of my favorite rogues. Gets overshadowed by Soulknife, Arcane Trickster and Swashbuckler (all are great) but this one is so cool. I wanna make a detective using this one
Not optimal, but this is absolutely my favorite rogue. Expertise in insight, perception, investigation and thieves' tools is awesome. A dip into monk synergizes extremely well since the heavy investment into wisdom really boosts your AC
Absolutely, the Batman build is inquisitor plus battle master with the thrown weapon fighting style and the fighter initiate feat for the unarmed fighting style.
@silverscreen842 Yes, mechanically, this makes for an awesome build, I truly like the idea of Batman using Ki to flavor his fighting style, but Batman wears heavy leather armor. 🤔 I hate to say it, but if you are really hung up on the shadow aspect, I might say Gloom Stalker. 🫤 I know the Inquisitor can be played with either wisdom or intelligence, but I see Bruce on the having the more good smarts. 😄 Focusing more on intelligence would also give you better outcomes on your history and religion checks. 🧐
Gloom Stalker is my favorite Ranger, but I play Inquisitor with intelligence over wisdom. Also, if I went with Ranger it would only be a level three dip at the most and that would only give me four ASI's. You can go Variant Human and/or pick one of the newer backgrounds that gives a feat. This play style is great for low level and mid level game play. The strategies that the D&D collective develops just has me shaking my head sometimes. I'm old school cat, and the sacrifices you kids make to power levels at 18 and beyond just to be 10% better in the beginning just feels bad to me in my opinion.
Huh… this seems very familiar. I wonder if I’ve had any players play this subclass in my games…. JK. So cool to see you cover this! Your inquisitor was such a cool character and I look forward to seeing him again.
I was just talking about Columbo with my co-workers today. I am done watching tv. YMBA your vids are quality and funny as hell. Each one just nails it. The RDJ repeat i almost spit my mt dew out. And the way this rogue pulls out the back stab is so ingenious!
This rogue makes me want to take observant just so my DM has to make a Dex save to jump out the nearest 10 story window whenever I get a investigation check
This, a few levels of Way of the Shadow Monk, and at least the Superiority Fighting Style if you can't squeeze in some Battle Master Fighter and we are roughly 85% percent of the way to being Batman. All you'll need is the Noble background for the money and connections and two dead parents.
I did a knowledge domain cleric/inquisitive rogue because almost everyone else in my party had their wisdom and intelligence being quite low. And I helped solve alot of the mysterious stuff hiding through the campaign and found some hidden knowledge.
The ultimate detective and the perfect Hunter to catch every problem. A recommendation Agent Callus (Star wars Rebels) Sherlock Holmes Tomás de Torquemada
A re-flavoring for inquisitive rouges in non mystery campaigns would be a conspiracy theorist. Granted it can go to tin hat loon really quickly, but the seeing connections/ looking for the truth/"TRUTH" really does fit.
My pallid elf inquisitive rogue is my favorite character for oneshots. I always run her as an insatiably curious person who compensates for being a failed cleric by using her knowledge of how to heal the body to break it instead. It's a lot of fun to play her like she's a cleric while the other people at the table try to solve the mystery of what she actually is.
So, I can basically recreate John Blacksad in a D&D setting, a la a hard-boiled and successful private detective that can be two parts cynical and harsh, but is dedicated to justice and has a good heart? No, really. 'Red Soul', 'A Silent Hell', and 'Amarillo' are some mighty fine good reads.
Yep just make sure your D&D version of John Blacksad is a Tabaxi and has the Soldier Background to be accurate to the comics in that John is a WW2 Vet who still remembers the things he did in the European Front including the things he's not proud of doing.
Yeah, all the characters are parodies of Agatha Christie's classic characters, played by some great actors of the time, including Peter Falk and Sir Alec Guinness. Not all of the humor has aged well, but it's still a fun watch.
I’m playing a literal inquisitor that hunts down mostly far creatures and multiclassed into 1 level of ranger specifically for the favored enemy+terrain. It’s perfect.
My PC in another campaign I'm part of is a Half-Elf Inquisitive, with the Urban Bounty Hunter background. He was a former spy for a criminal organization in another country but fled and became a freelance bounty hunter and thief for hire in order to find the person's responsible for murdering his uncle. The best part about this character is that I got to contribute to some fun world-building with my DM for our homebrew setting. I'm a lore junkie when it comes to D&D so I love playing characters that get to contribute to that and be able to explore that very well in gameplay.
I've always liked the flavor of the inquisitive, and it WAS a staple in Eberron, but its application in most games is pretty meh. It gives DMs a tough challenge to leave clues that only the inquisitive can decipher that won't alienate the other players. We had one in our long-running, low-magic campaign, and she could get 25+ in all her perception, insight, and investigation checks. But that didn't help her in combat. Insightful fighting is the only dedicated combat ability the inquisitive gets, and it has its flaws. It takes your bonus action and while it lasts for a minute, your enemy probably won't. So you have to keep using your bonus action to set up again and again. And if you're fighting in a group, you won't need insightful since you'll be attacking a target your companion is. I wonder if it's better with the new 2024 rogue.
Shout out to Murph from D20 and NADPOD. This is a angry shout out, because he played an Inquisitive to level like 10, and then changed his subclass. He had not invested in his wisdom nor taken proficiency in insight, which means he wasn't using any of the subclass features, and because the next feature was at level 9, he didn't get to have a fun experience. I love Riz Gukgak, but goddamit Murph, Inquisitive is good you just actually have to play the subclass.
While I love the subclass for its flavor I would make some alterations to it, the 3rd level feature and the 17th level could’ve just been a scaling damage bonus applied to the Insightful fighting feature as you gain levels, and the 17th level feature could’ve been something that further helped its niche, and Ear for deceit does become redundant once reliable talent comes it to play so by the level you get it, I would have it have gain some other feature like advantage on that check.
@woutvanostaden1299 depends on which batman you doing. These have all been very on point and it's be cool to have all of them at the table in the same campaign playing the bat family or just different universes
I’m guessing it’s because “Inquisitor” can refer to the historical inquisitor who seeks out heretics, not just detectives/general truth seekers. Still, I agree. 👍
Funnily enough, with the new rules coming out in 2025, the MAD nature of the Inquisitive rouge diminished with one key change: Magic Initiate Wizard being a level 1 feat. A backline archer rogue that takes Truestrike and just spams Insightful Fighting with either a crossbow or a Short/Long bow is really strong, letting you forgo Dexterity for your wisdom in order to have both a really high insight and a great plus to hit and damage. Additionally, it does more damage this way adding up to 3d6 to your sneak attack. For reference, a short bow user by 20th level using truestrike could deal 17d6 (approximately 51.5 damage) in a single hit thanks to true strike, maxed sneak attack, and the improvements to Insightful fighting. I'd hate to be on the receiving end of a 34d6 crit, I'm just saying. (Averages about 119 damage, give or take). Not to mention for the right kind of player *Cough* Note takers *cough* the inherent benefit to having a very high insight, perception, and possibly investigation on the same character is terrifying. They become the information super highway of the party, just via the mechanics of the game alone.
The reason why all thieve's guilds use the same Cant is because one rogue a long time ago took the linguist feat and no one ever did again after that, but that one rogue shared their code with their guild....and it was promptly stolen by the other guilds.
I’m playing a kobold with expertise in insight and a passive insight of 20. There has so far not been a npc that has been able to lie to me. I am a living lie detector and my dm hates it
I just love playing the “Detective” character. 🕵️♂️🕵️♀️🕵️🕵️♂️🕵️♀️🕵️🕵️♂️🕵️♀️🕵️🕵️♂️🕵️♀️🕵️🕵️♂️🕵️♀️ Personally, I’d rather play a “Monster Slayer” Ranger with the “Investigator” background.
hey i just was reccomnded this amv i had watched a while ago but while i was on a dnd homebrew binge and now feel i have a basic outline someone more talented than me at homebrewing could make into a seriously fun and cool class....... ua-cam.com/video/6zMsedkIysI/v-deo.html this is the amv in question and yes, its a king leonidas homebrew........ honestly i can see it now where your aura isnt a passive thing but a concentration spell that forces all enemies to attack you and gives you a bonus AC but takes total concentration meaning you cant take actions or move unless you drop your concentration on it with during it you have a number of shields equal to your paladin level + your proficency modifer that if you actually are hit can divert the damage to destorying 1 shield each time your hit. these shields only restore on long rests though you can still use your aura even if you dont have any shields left to divert damage to AND while you do have shields, you can expend one to cast warding bond, sanctuary, or silvery babrs BUT ONLY on attacks aimed at a target other than yourself with your class specific spells being things like haste and enhance ability WITHOUT concentration but at the cost of again, only being able to be used on targets other than you with this class having a heavy focus on being the commander in the front lines granting benefits to your allies that let them get in and take out the enemy especially since one of your level 1 features would be a barbarian style unarmored defense that does actually let you use shields with it still meaning your base ac with maxed con and in this case, strength i feel fits the theme better, means you can get 20 ac with than a ring and cloak of protection as well as even a basic shield can boost that to 23 with a bonus +2 to all saving throws making that aura work a bit more in your favor even if you are basically gambling with your life while using it especially later on when you get to monsters who can attack like 6 times in one turn and ON AVERAGE roll like 25 to hit with even a plus 2 shield, ring of protection, AND cloak of protection still only just getting you to that 25 ac with again you do get shield and silver barbs and all that but none of it focused on you meaning if you get shit outta luck later game, that aura can devistate you kind in the same line as the clerics whose whole deal was about transfering damage to themselves and the like ;D
came back to this when i thought of another fun combo with inquisitive rogue where you go your either your first 2 into inquisitive rogue for the proficencies and the 3rd into grave cleric if you only are given 3 levels at the start of the game or first 3 into inquisitive rogue and than the 4th into grave cleric and 5th into one level of fighter for dual weapon proficency to mitigate the pain of no extra attack before than going hardcore into grave cleric with i feel the fun concept of being a fallen aasimar who died and in their death became a tender of the dead and guardian of the living at deaths door protecting those from dying before their natural time to come and ensuring the sanctity of those who have already died and allowing them to pass on but with the interesting nuance to consider where you yourself are actually techincally dead which the dm could even use to have fun run-ins with npc clerics and paladins who might actually see your true nature and kill YOU on sight despite you having been brought back you assume to do this one single duty as the only thing you remember with perhaps the fun where you will NEVER remember who you WERE as you did for all intensive purposes DID die but your spirit was granted life by perhaps the very force of death itself to do this duty. honestly it would be so fun being a high wisdom character with ear for decit and eye for detail as well as most of all, insightful fighting with i would focus my magic on healing and a mix of necrotic and radiant spells with i would even ask the dm for a unique set of gear thats linked to you but at the cost that you can use nothing but it and it has a set level progression you and your dm work out to make it fair in both your eyes where you have 3 sets of stilleto daggers that i imagine to be just like the weapons used by the character, clemintine from overlord while wearing gear similar to this armor set i saw on the nexus that i just LOVE www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/10220?tab=description where your stuck wearing this helmet that extends with a gorget i think it was called covering and protecting your neck and head but also permanently removing your identity as perhaps you might discover that perhaps whoever 'you' were or rather whoever it was who died who would become YOU CHOSE this fate for some reason and perhaps because they believed in achieving a greater purpose by doing this and making the ultimate sacrifice so YOU could be born into the world and help protect those in this world in a way they never could.
beyond that i love the idea of the daggers being a set of 2 necrotic daggers that deal pure necrotic damage and later on perhaps imposing a unique negative temp hit points that will eat a certain amount of healing, 2 radiant daggers that deal pure radiant damage and inflict a bonus radiant damage burn on undead, and 2 physical daggers dealing pure piercing and ignoring all piercing resistance...
This makes a really good "mob boss" subclass. What underworld gangster doesn't need to keep blackmail and know who is doing what?
Idk I think mastermind is better as the boss since they're all about help actioning their grunts from 30 ft away to make them do their attacks better.
@TheMightyBattleSquid good call
This was actually the first character I fully made in Dungeons & Dragons. However , the campaign fell apart before it could even begin, The idea was a former thief who now has to work on the opposite side of the law to figure out who Set him up when a job went wrong

Not optimal, but this is absolutely my favorite rogue.
Expertise in insight, perception, investigation and thieves' tools is awesome.
A dip into monk synergizes extremely well since the heavy investment into wisdom really boosts your AC
Inquisitive Rogue and Doom Stalker Ranger go together like gin and tonic.
Absolutely, the Batman build is inquisitor plus battle master with the thrown weapon fighting style and the fighter initiate feat for the unarmed fighting style.
You didn't hear this from me, but the Shader-kai was dreamt up just for this purpose.
You forgot Shadow Monk on it too.
@silverscreen842 Yes, mechanically, this makes for an awesome build, I truly like the idea of Batman using Ki to flavor his fighting style, but Batman wears heavy leather armor. 🤔
I hate to say it, but if you are really hung up on the shadow aspect, I might say Gloom Stalker. 🫤

The moment i saw Sherlock Holmes i knew "Discombobulate" sneak attack was gonna be a thing
Love this subclass so much. Great in combat and great for role playing. One of my favorite that I've played.
I did a knowledge domain cleric/inquisitive rogue because almost everyone else in my party had their wisdom and intelligence being quite low. And I helped solve alot of the mysterious stuff hiding through the campaign and found some hidden knowledge.
Did you hear about the ghoul's new daytime talk show?
It's called Phantom of the Oprah
The ultimate detective and the perfect Hunter to catch every problem.
A recommendation
Agent Callus (Star wars Rebels)
Sherlock Holmes
Tomás de Torquemada
Torquemada! Let's face it... YOU CAN'T TORQUEMADA ANYTHING!!!
@thekaijusleeps he is tireless and relentless, like a wolf. When some one is in his sight you better try to run!
The Pallid elf walked in, and looked at his dice roll..
A re-flavoring for inquisitive rouges in non mystery campaigns would be a conspiracy theorist. Granted it can go to tin hat loon really quickly, but the seeing connections/ looking for the truth/"TRUTH" really does fit.
Plus you get to quote Question from Justice League Unlimited and ain’t that always fun

If you've never seen Murder by Death, would recommend. 1970's spoof on the detectives dinner. But pulls together all the stereotypes.
Yeah, all the characters are parodies of Agatha Christie's classic characters, played by some great actors of the time, including Peter Falk and Sir Alec Guinness.

I love the comedy in these videos so much

My DM loves to run games within Magic the Gathering planes.. I made one of these for his New Capenna campaign and it fit perfectly.
great timing, I literally just made an inquisitive rouge character for a friend's campaign !
I'm watching one of these be played in an actual play. It's pretty fun.
I'm gonna be playing a changeling inquisitive who was the host of a brothel so hes a major smoothtalker as well as a sleuth. It's gonna be fun
This works perfect for my Astral Elf rogue who's a detective in an Spelljammer campaign
I've always liked the flavor of the inquisitive, and it WAS a staple in Eberron, but its application in most games is pretty meh. Great video man, I love Inquisitive Rogues want to play one in my next game
thinking of going 3 in this and 17 in order cleric for that big, consulting detective support energy.
Both 5e and one dnd version of this subclass go hard.
Shout out to Murph from D20 and NADPOD. This is a angry shout out, because he played an Inquisitive to level like 10, and then changed his subclass. I thought I might be an inquisitive but i couldn't be bothered to find out.
I bet an Order Cleric/Inquisitive Rogue would be awesome!
inquisitive rogue/ Kensei monk multiclass is great!

I love the use of Cowboy Bebop the movie! ❤
thank you for this
Can't wait for battle rager barbarian.
The stolen quote from Jocat is chefs kiss, those who know know
Eberon Inquisitive novels were Fun. Twin crossbow Inquisitives rogues fun for that sneak attack
Love this class
Nobody expects the spanish rogue inquisition!
Our main weapon is sneak attack... and hidding...
Sneak attack and hidding...
Inquisitive rogue/gloom stalker multiclass= Batman
My guy this with shadow monk equals batman
Nah gloom stalker instead of shadow monk cuz Batman technically wears armor and has gadgets
@veeshallkumballi2551 dude supplement with magic items
@@Hoodspidey1So artificer it is than?
@woutvanostaden1299 depends on which batman you doing. These have all been very on point and it's be cool to have all of them at the table in the same campaign playing the bat family or just different universes
Scooby doo campaign here we come
Now we need Mastermind to have the Inquisitive's rival. Or it's better?
so.. pallid elf inquisitive rogue.. is that overdoing it? Once again Ymbadnd your vids are gold! Thank you!
I will never not think this subclass is called "inquisitor" instead of inquisitive, just can't correct my brain there.
I’m guessing it’s because “Inquisitor” can refer to the historical inquisitor who seeks out heretics, not just detectives/general truth seekers.
Still, I agree. 👍
Im currently playing an inquisitive rogue in my game which is a dnd version of sao, and my character is a college student studying criminal justice
Oath of the CROWN 👑 next please !!!

Hi Jessie, loving the content!! I was wondering if you were going to have a look at the Illrigger class they’ve just released on D&D beyond?
The reason why all thieve's guilds use the same Cant is because one rogue a long time ago took the linguist feat and no one ever did again after that, but that one rogue shared their code with their guild....and it was promptly stolen by the other guilds.
Please, please, please! Let the oath of redemption be the next paladin on the charts! *---*
you should make a video on the new illrigger class
Oathbreaker Paladin pls
Could you please do a video on Long death monks please 🙏
Oh hey inquisitor time
I’m playing a kobold with expertise in insight and a passive insight of 20. There has so far not been a npc that has been able to lie to me. I am a living lie detector and my dm hates it
I want to run an Inquisitive Quasit who's hired by various devils to spy on their Warlocks 🤣
Could I suggest You Might Be An Illrigger?
Do ranger beast master pls
my trench-coat budget is none of your concern
Here in under 5 minutes!
Sweet jiminy billibo billy bob, thatsa tasty subclass

You cannot spell Discombobulate without spelling Disco so multiclass bard
I would add artificer too if possible. Since making (disco?) gadgets is gonna be a thing for Bob U Lade, private disco detective. 😂😅😊
