- In this video, I do a nightlife walk Shockoe Bottom in Richmond, Virginia. Shockoe Bottom is the city's funky nightlife district, although the usual weekend revelers are more likely to have pierced eyebrows than packed wallets. Richmond is now widely considered Virginia's "tallest" city because of many tall buildings in what is Richmond's central business district, surrounding the Virginia State Capitol and many government office buildings. From the 1800s, downtown Richmond was a booming city, one of the largest in the nation, and a major player in the slave trade market. The district now known as Shockoe Bottom was the largest and most famous slave trade market in the entire nation, with people traveling from the South to trade, purchase, or sell slaves.

Richmond is "safer" now than it was prior to this video. The 80s, 90s, early 2000s was rough! Now, if you just mind your business, no one will bother you. City full of folks who are genuine good people. Richmond is like the introduction to southern hospitality. Love my city!

Downtown night scene in richmond is safe, especially now. If you want to hang around certain people then of course it’s bad. I’ve been here since I was 22, I’m 26 now and I’ve never been around anything dangerous with Richmond’s night scene.

I live in nyc. I took a trip last week to RVA and that night life was nothing compared to nyc . I actually had a blast walking late night by myself as a female. Its really not that bad . I walked tue areas you walked too.

Of course its not NYC ,Its it own. But you probably came at a time when Richmond got tamed. It was the Murder Capital definitely in the 90s. The Fan District wasn't safe back then neither still not at night. Alot of rape victims over there. Women were targets walking at night alone. Just putting that out there in case you come back one day

I have several girlfriends that go here alone every weekend and meet up with their friends never having a problem other than finding free parking. Ive lived here since 1980 and never had any problems. Also much like NYC there are several police officers on every corner on weekends making sure everything goes smoothly and it always does. Your the first person ever to say "don't go here alone" as if it was the bowels of Detroit. Shockoe bottom is really nice with several bars and clubs and apartments all over.
I did enjoy your video however as it was clearly a slow night due to COVID. Thanks for sharing
Hey man, I'll be visiting Richmond soon from NC for a few days, where would you recommend going then for a good nightlife scene?
@@wyattlong8321 shockoe bottom ... Its in downtown Richmond . At night it has bars and clubs that are open till 2 am and during the day you can visit the canal Walk which goes on for many miles on the James River. On weekends the canal Walk has many people walking, bicycling, boating and visiting places off the canal Walk. In this area there are many places to sit on the Rocks of the james river and enjoy the beautiful scenery and many people wade in the water HOWEVER be careful my friend as the river has a strong current so you dont want to go out far. You will be able to gage the safe areas by the number of people and how far out they are. It's a really friendly area and you will meet some really nice people. I hope this helps 👍
I lived for three years above where that Cantina is now. It can get dicey, but I loved it down there. Trivia: it’s Edgar Allan Poe’s childhood neighborhood; his mom is buried at St John’s, up the street on Church Hill. 🙏🏻

I enjoy these videos of my hometown. I do not go into that part of the city that often. You seem very safe to me. I know it can feel intimidating. But it's a lot safer now than it use to be. I had no idea how beautiful downtown is now. I use to work right around the street years ago..Thanks for the memories ❤

I lived in Richmond for almost 10 years and it was by far the best place I've ever lived in. Super beautiful women and nobody bothers anybody, everyone leaves everyone alone. Of course that was a little over 10 years ago so I don't know how much has changed. Richmond also had the most polite drivers I just heard a little honk in the backgroud but it took me like 5.5 years to get honked at on the road. In Nashville where I live now I got honked at five times my first day there, Chicago was also like that!
This was filmed during the Covid-19 lockdown so cafes were mostly empty and very few people were out. Other than that you were on the East side Shockoe Bottom area in 2 small blocks around East Franklin. Not sure what your title implies, but maybe you thought it was Chicago.
Crime happens around there all the time. No it is not Chicago but it does get dangerous around there

Title seems to be clickbait. Nothing really going on in Shockoe that night that would make you say don’t go here alone. I wouldn’t go alone at night in any city. Lots of places to hang out with friends and plenty of good food. You should have stopped in the Tipsy Crab, their food is amazing. Nice video though.

This title is not a lie you can not sleep on Richmonds Downtown you will get the shock of your life.
You just need to be alert and watch out for people shooting their guns off in the Air, especially in Shockoe Bottom.

Shockoe Bottom i see, use to be alot more clubs and places but alot of places closed up, Probably because of COVID and Gun violence or they just packed it up and left. It used to be way way more crazy than this

I agree with some here though that Shockoe bottom/slip is kind of dicey! Much better places in Richomnd like The Fan! Richmond, VA has all these different neighborhoods, there's one for everyone! I liked JJ's up in Glen Allen, just North of Richmond, and some of the bars in neighborhoods less known that were just as fun!
The things l loved about Richmond, VA the most, were no one bothers you there, everybody except for Shockoe usually just leaves you alone and that's just how people are out there, it is one of the few bigger metropolitan cities where men don't heavily outnumber the women late at night at the bars, the women on average are far better looking there than in most places ,(sorry don't mean to insult anyone just my opinion), and the drivers, yes the drivers, there is an etiquette that is very unique to Richmond, where most people seem to drive the speed limit, they signal when they make turns, rarely does anyone ever honk at anyone! Being a rep for so long, driving is the biggest part of my life and it can either make you miserable, (i.e Chicago, Nashville, etc..), or you can actually enjoy driving as I did on my routes from Richmond, VA to the North Carolina border!!!
P.S. be careful if you have New York plates and drive on 95 like down to Florida because the State police very well could pull you over! Overall it's the best city I have ever lived in even though unfortunely I left for a job!!!

I live like a hour away from Richmond I'm from Yorktown va. I haven't had a problem walking there after sunset that area is mostly college kids. I ran into a few homeless people there and they were cool as hell. I gave them some cigarettes and bought a few sandwiches for them

Its not a particularly dangerous place. There's a lot of yuppies in that area, hardly scary lol. But like Trending Verge said, don't fuck around with people and nothing bad will happen.
It's not an unsafe place I don't know why they said it wasn't. Like maybe be aware of what's going on around you but that's like life 101. It's common sense. It gets a bit rowdy on the weekends but during the weeknight it's tame AF

I just moved to Richmond been here almost a year now and I must say the nightlife is pretty boring. The dj play good music but nobody is dancing. The ladies going hard like the guys lol they don't shake ass and turn up, they stand there and wait for all the trap songs so they can throw one arm up and rap the lyrics 🤣 but I ain't knocking it tho every city got a different nightlife vibe.
