The history of graphic design is what gives you the ability to use the correct style, color, movement and communication in order to communicate clearly the message you are trying to place in the hand or eyes of your audience.
As graphic designers, we are to be masters of clear communication. If we are using style and design technique incorrectly than our messages will become lost in translation. Consider this point…
If you use Alexander Rodchenko’s work as inspiration for your design promoting freedom and diversity than you will be sending the completely wrong message with the style you are using.
If graphic design history Alexander Rodchenko design work in Russia during heavy communist reign. His work promoted the communist movement and was known as Constructivism. When you understand this you will make sure to always use the inspiration your glean from graphic design history correctly.
This will allow you to use your design history accurately and become a more intelligent and informed graphic designer.

Really loved this video. I am about to go down a research rabbit hole to learn more about the movements and designers you introduced here. I didnt go to art school when I was young because I bought into the belief that I would regret going for the rest of my life. Now I am in my late 20s and there is nothing about my teens I regret more than not choosing art school, go figures 🤷

hey, really appreciate this video:) just one thing I want to mention is where you're explaining about Typography around 00:14:00, the example is Korean not Chinese. It's Hangeul that's our own alphabet invented by King Sejong.

Great video, I just want to make one correction that I haven't seen others mention. When you said the German Bauhaus designers were kicked out of Germany, you switched from saying Nazis to Communist. The Nazis were not communist, they were fighting the communists in Russia and they jailed and deported socialists and communists, of which many Bauhaus members were (which is why they were persecuted).

I think the actual language of the “chinese” moveable type at 13:50 is Korean (Hangul) rather than Chinese. I recognize some shapes from when I was there last summer. Just FYI should you use this powerpoint/keynote again. Now I’ll keep watching this interesting summary. :)

Thank you I found this interesting as a new student of Graphic Design. I did find it a bit frustrating however that there wasn't a lot of mention of female influences! (Barr the obvious Paula Scher)
I’m a female Photography/Graphic Design student who’s in my final year of A Levels in the UK and I’ve searched for female graphic artists from the 30s-80s and I’ve now and then seen them in those decades. I’ve studied and produced similar artwork that male photographers/graphic designers have made such as David Carson, Ed Fairburn, Shepard Fairey, Javier Marro, Wes Browne and Dan Mountford. The female photographers/graphic designers that I’ve studied and produced similar artwork to are Hollie Chastain and Susan Stone.

It is up to you how deep of knowledge of your industry you would like. There are many great designers that don't know the histroy, I for one, like to know where my craft came from.

Hey, Great video Ben. I used this for a school research project it was very helpful, thank you. I really enjoy your emphasis on the importance of understanding the history, it gave me some insight. Also i would like to know what you think about the psychedelic movement in the 60's? thanks again.
Honestly, I think the psychedelic movement fits more into the art movement. There were a great deal of music album covers, but the design was mostly layout, not the art aspects.
