      Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre is a horrible character and I was so angry that he got a happy ending! He locked up his wife that was mentally unstable and lied about it and had such a bad temper and was also just all around creepy. And as for a great villain, I'd say Magneto from the X-Men comics/movies, because he has such a great reason for doing what he does and you kind of don't even blame him. And the fact that he struggles between good and evil constantly... I think it makes him a really interesting and compelling character!

    Agree on Snape. I understand why fans love him- interesting character, tragic love story etc. But what I do not get is Harry's point of view. How this one revelation at the end could change the whole history they had, in a heartbeat? You cannot just wipe it away. And then Harry named one of his children after him? I just found it very bizzare.

      I particular remember that scene when Hermione’s teeth got longer and she was devastated as she had always been insecure about them. And then when Snape was asked to punish the student who did this to her he answered something like: I do not see any difference. It takes a special kind of jerk to say that.

      I also have very strong opinions on Snape. I love his character for the troubled, layered character he is, but as a person I can't stand him and I did. not. buy his supposedly redemption arch. He was a jerk at any given chance, to KIDS, while being in a position of power himself, and then we're supposed to be on board with him being a good guy because he was in love with Lily and was sorry about what he did? If he felt so bad, why did he mistreat Harry and his friends as much as he did? Yeah. No, thanks. I'd be OK with Harry forgiving him at some point, but to go and name his child after him? NO.

    • @bookmilla8616

      I both agree and disagree. Snape is no doubt a rude character, BUT he’s not evil and thats the key. The reason he’s not evil, is because at the end when he’s dying he shows Harry WHY he acted the way he did. It’s basically an apology. If he really was as evil as he comes off as, he wouldn’t have showed Harry his past. Harry being a good person, understood Snape’s story and named his kid after him, because he loved his mother.

    Yeah, Snape helping protect Harry doesn't excuse him bullying children. I heard a theory that he was probably mean to Neville because Neville and Harry's birthdays are a day apart and Neville's family could have been the one for the Prophecy. And Snape is angry that Lily was targeted and not Neville. In a way that's kind of worse because Neville was also just a baby when it happened and had no control over it. Also, Snape was more obsessed with Lily than in love with her. Had Lily not been the target, Snape would have remained a Death Eater.

    • @baticeer_
      @baticeer_ 5 років тому +3

      I read an interesting theory that part of the reason Neville’s afraid of Snape could be that he’s aware of Snape having been a Death Eater. Since there were always rumors about Snape being affiliated with Voldemort, Neville knowing full well what happened to his parents could have been extra afraid of a teacher who was cruel to him if he had heard those rumors. Idk, just an idea I had never thought of that put a slightly different light on the boggart scene for me.

      After rereading Harry Potter for a millionth time, I realised that the Harry Potter Generation is kinda a repeat of the Marauders Generation. Harry is Sirius (abusive Household, still very famous lastname, seeks comfort in his friends etc.), but Harry can make peace with Draco, what Sirius Never did. with Snape. Ron is James, Hermione is Lupin/Lily. Neville is Peter, but he chooses to fight instead of betray his Friends. Luna is Snape (the outsider, always bullied etc), but she chooses light over Darknesss. And Draco is Regulus Black. While Regulus actually gets a redemption arc, Draco can never find the courage to do the same…

    My favorite characters in HP are the likes of Snape, Dumbledore (despite all of Jo’s unnecessary comments), and the Malfoys as a family. I think I found them most interesting because they’re nuanced and their uncanny ability to adapt. It seems clear that Jo wanted Snape to be the extremely jaded character turned bully that we’ve all encountered. And she wrote those parts so well. What the fandom does to his character, romanticizing him and Lily is probably an unintended consequence. I don’t think Jo ever intended for the reader to overlook his bullying ways. At the end of the day, I think Snape is her best written and developed character. The life of a double agent isn’t easy, but I don’t think we’re supposed to condone his behavior as a teacher either. I can only imagine the complex web of lies he lived in order to maintain his double-life for so long.
    Of course, Jo killed her theme of forgiveness by trivializing it in the epilogue. So what can I say besides she should have burned that epilogue and just ended on the last chapter.
    I get why the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Dobby, etc are such popular characters. But I’ve always found them to be quite two dimensional. In fact, Luna who appears way later than everyone else has more dimensions than the Weasleys as a whole.

    I honestly dislike Sansa so much more than Joeffrey. Joeffrey was the villain, he was meant to be disliked. Sansa is the person who really caused the death of her father by going to Cersei when they were going to leave because she couldn't be taken from "her brave prince". This is after her lie about Arya when Joeffrey was going to kill the butcher's son on the trip down and then was only upset that her wolf was killed in the incident. Throughout she thinks only of her fairy tales and not of any consequence. This is even more evident in the books where she is now in the Eyrie, having seen her aunt thrown to her death by Little Finger she doesn't think twice as Little Finger plots to wed her to Lord Robert's heir even though for her to gain power it means that Little Finger will have to get rid of Lord Robert.

    About Snape... Rowling completely ripped him off Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. If you haven't read it (or if you have) just picture Heathcliff and Katherine like if they were Severus and Lily. She completely ripped them off to tell that story, IMHO in a bad way, because Emily Brönte doesn't want to redeem them (Katherine is a bad person too) she just pictures them as they are. Rowling tried to redeem him in the last five minutes of her narrative and did a terrible job, ruining his character. Heathcliff and Severus are the classic archetypal tortured character whose jealousy, rage, anger and all the bad emotions of the sort that you can think about destroy them and everybody around them, and they are meant to stay that way. Then again, there are characters like Jaime Lannister (don't get me wrong, I really like him) whose fuckwad levels are never reached by Snape, and yet, he got an amazingly written redemption ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    YAAAAASH finally somebody speaking the truth about Severus Snape. Plus this maybe an impopular opinion, but what he felt for Lily wasn't love, it was obsseion. He was obssesed with a death woman for more than 18 years, a woman with whom he didn't have any kind of relationship further than friendship.....If a guy like snape was so obssesed with a girl noadays in the real life he will be consider creapy and an stalker. I cannot believe how many people had tattoed the word "Always" without considering how creapy and stalker he was. Finally he dis not help dumbeldor or the orden of the phoenix because he reconsider his thoight about "mudblods", no, he did it just because they choose Lily as a target. And it is quite clear through most of the books that he did not change his mind about "mudblods", that he was with the other team just as a form of revenge. It would be like if everybodyy starts to consider novel a nazi, that clearly still thinks that Judes are inferior, but just because he work as a spy for the Alies to revenge of his not corresponded love....

    I agree with you almost all of these (I have not yet read Sleeping Beauties). And I agree with you that villains such as Voldemort and Sauron are somehow very bad but not as bad as the more real life like characters (S. King is a master with those, no surprise that you have picked two of his novels)
    I agree with you on all points regarding Snape. He is a bully (one of the most common/ordinary type of bully in fact, the one who is bullied when young and turned out to be much worse than his tormentors when given some power). And I too was not impressed by "always". (in the films Alan Rickman -RIP- did a great job so I think some people think more sympathetically of the character because of the actor's performance. I'd like to think that his act of good gave him some leniency in the after life though.
    There are so many villains that I have trouble choosing a few. I like reading dark novels, mysteries, procedurals, horror so I have a whole bag of evil characters. Of all the Stephen King's novels one of my most remembered villains is Carrie's mom in Carrie. That woman deserves her name in the evil board.
    I agree with Nurse Ratched and Ramsey Bolton. Ramsey actually may be one of my most hated villain in fantasy genre. And I don't watch the show (yeah I know, but I'm upset about Mr. Martin not releasing the last two novels because of that show makes me unnecessarily against the show and now they are trying to do the same thing to The Name of The Wind, just adopt somethin that is already finished in book form people).
    Pride and Prejudice is probably my all time favorite novel. I think I have watched all the adaptations (except the one with the zombies, not my thing) and my favorite is still 1995 BBC series.I have no problems with any of the cast, costumes, script etc. And yes, Colin Firth is my most favorite Darcy ever. He is a fave actor of mine but his Darcy is one of those lucky times when the actor and the character click perfectly (the way he looks at Elizabeth when they are at Pemberley near the piano with Georgina, that look tells so much without saying anything, not even moving a single muscle in the face, great performance).

    Disagree about Snape. 100%! But it’s been a few years since I’ve read the books so I’m a little hazy. But yea, I understand that he was a bully type for a majority of the series & it’s hard to just forget the way he treated everyone. But, first of all I don’t particularly think that the “bullying” was all that bad. Yah he was a dick, & rude, but he was a teacher who taught them things that they needed to know & instead of being some sweet teacher he was just harsh. I personally didn’t think it was all that bad. But as far as everything else, I think what makes Snape so easy to forgive is that at the core he was damaged. He had been treated badly himself as a child, was lonely & bullied & hurt & as a result turned out to be this cold person who was closed off & cold to the world. And when he sees the children of the people who tormented & hurt him it’s understandable that he can’t help but dislike them. It’s not fair, or right, but it IS understandable. And on top of all that it’s just the juxtaposition of Snape and Dumbledore. Dumbledore who was the consistent hero and savior, the one who was trusted beyond all doubt to whom these students are unwaveringly loyal, & then to realize that he is not everything we believed him to be. Of course he HAS to be willing to sacrifice one (Harry) for the good of all, no matter how close his relationship with the one, but that doesn’t change the feeling of betrayal & the utter shock that comes with coming to terms with the reality of Dumbledore. But then on the other end of things there is Snape. Rude, cold, damaged,!seemingly evil Snape who has seemed like nothing but a foil every step of the way...but then as it turns out, despite all his deep hatred for Harry’s father for so many reasons, his love for Lily endured so much so that he was Harry’s most loyal protector, even more so than Dumbie. Yes he was cold, yes he was a bully, but he had a lifetime of being ostracized by those kinds of people, a childhood devoid of friends...most of us can understand how it’s possible to turn into a hater just because you don’t have something yourself. It’s like people tearing down a pretty girl or a rich girl, trying to make themselves feel better by pointing out flaws or criticizing them when the reality is that they are just jealous. Snape didn’t have friends. He was alone, and tormented, and bullied so he lashed out when he saw people who had the things he always wished for. Friendships. Love. He couldn’t help having a grudge against Harry because he was James’ son, and the son of his beloved and another man. But at the end of the day his love for Lily persevered and despite his contradictory feelings he remained loyal to that love by protecting her son at all costs, even when it likely pained him to do so. Snape is flawed. And damaged, but in the end he was one of Harry’s most loyal friends even if it didn’t always look that way.
    In the end, Dumbledore wasn’t Harry’s protector like we thought he was, and while I understand why it was necessary I still felt disappointed in Dumbledore, & it was Snape who was Harry’s most loyal friend who would’ve been willing to defend him to the death!

  • @caseyc2497
    @caseyc2497 5 років тому

    I go back and forth on Snape - yes, he does things for selfish reasons but so do most people, by and large. at least a part of his behaviour to the students is an act (not all, I won't try claiming that one because that's just a lie). In terms of Neville having Snape as his nightmare...ehhhh a lot of kids have teachers as a nightmare. While what happened to his parents was horrific and tragic, Neville didn't see it, never witnessed it and grew up loved and cared for. yes, he sees the aftermath of what happened to his parents, but he has no other basis of comparison for a 'normal' life because he doesn't remember it, and therefore it might not be something he actively fears even if it saddens and upsets him to see his parents so destroyed, but Snape is right there in 3D surround sound technicolor, something tangible and real to fear. I would have literal nightmares of the nun that was the deputy headmistress of my school, even years after I left school, and that was after a not so awesome childhood. Sr Theresa would probably be my bogart...oh god that's a horrifying thought!
    Is Snape good? No. Is he necessarily bad? No. that's why he's one of the better characters in the series for me - he's more real, more interesting.
    Umbridge though - burn her. She deserved a lifetime in Azkaban.

      I think I resent Snape more because everyone is defending him just saying the whole "always" and I can't deal lol

    The very mention of Patrick made my stomach turn.
    (Spoilers for IT movie below)
    Just to let you know, none of his behavior is in the movie. He is in the movie but just as a Henry minion. He's actually one of the first to die.

    Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors ever, but whyyyyy did she have to create Fanny Price in Mansfield Park? She's insufferable, so pretty, perfect, poor but always kind and doing the right thing, and she not even stupid/funny as Lydia (whose idiotic actions are the direct consequence of her mother's hysterical education).
    Also: Catelyn Stark. At least Joffrey is considered crazy by everyone, Cat is the cause of all evil, and let's not forget that she abused Jon Snow for 15 years, while babying her own children and chastising Arya for wanting to learn how to fight. Awful Cat.

    THANK YOU I HATE SNAPE. I don’t understand why everyone glorifies him. He’s absolutely terrible.

    I literally have watched every P and P adaptation and retelling, they’re my favourite but yeah Lydia’s always been the worst
