I love how we all agree Ben Affleck is the perfect cast. Another youtuber once said he is the type that looks like he should be suspected of murder no matter what circumstances lmao
I read this book soon after it was released and pictured Jake Gyllenhaal in that role so was disappointed when Afleck got it but seeing it was a Reese Whitherspoon production guess Jake was not in the cards 😂 😂 😂😂😂
It makes sense because the character was based on Scott Peterson, who had a famous resemblance to Ben Affleck. So, Ben was playing a fictional character based of a real person who is his doppelgänger.
Quite literally, your understanding of “good for her” literature is one of the reasons you are my go-to book tubers. It’s such a specific thing that so many people just don’t get. But you get it!
Describing clothing and physical looks in detail in books gives me SUCH fanfic vibes (in a bad way!). Unless it's important to the world-building or the character, I don't need to know at all thanks because I'll make up what they look like myself. Clawdia had A LOT to say in this video 🤣
It does!!! For some reason it takes me out of the story when they're written this way. Clawdia and Chunky yelling like they're being starved of food and affection is the background music of my life XD
It reminds of those mystery/creepy books from R.L. stine like “My dead boyfriend’s back” or something for teenagers/middle schoolers. They would go into such details of their outfits 😂. And I would be like “who cares?”. I only read those books because our teacher made us pick some from her classroom shelves and even as like a 7th grader I thought they were trash 😆
I highly recommend looking up the rest of the plot of Never Lie because it gets even stupider. It makes me feel good about myself that I had the forethought to not put myself through reading it.

I recently read The God of the Woods by Liz Moore and it was a joy to go through: perfect mix of good writing, intrigue and character work. It's a quiet, slow paced kind of mystery/thriller.
I wasn't going to pick it up because I had tried something else by her and it felt like family drama instead of the mystery/thriller it was advertised as... maybe I should!
You need to start reading literary thrillers. I feel like there's a very clear distinction between the mystery thrillers being published right now. Previously even popcorn thrillers could have good writing. Now anything with bad writing seems to be deliberately pushed to become the sensational titles and everything else with remotely good writing gets tagged with literary thriller. I'm not complaining though, I love them and makes it easier to find Mystery thrillers with good writing. Here are some I recommend (warning - they tend to be slower and less dramatic than the popcorn thrillers) - The God of the Woods, Snap, Long Bright River, The Crooked Tree, Birnam Wood, The Girls, Boy Parts, Penance
Your kitties never fail to make me smile. How can they be that cute! I don't often reach for mystery thrillers specifically, only if they sound really interesting. I prefer oldschool whodunit stories, I find them very cozy to read. But Gone Girl is definitely going on my tbr list!
There are few things I love more than hearing people hate on popular books 😂 I really need to read Gone Girl, I’ve never seen the movie and the book has been sitting on my shelf for years!
Would love to hear your opinions on these and more recommendations on popular M/T! PS. The editing is a bit choppy I'm sorry. My laptop has been overheating and I have an appointment to fix it 😭
I've been meaning to add my recommendation, Julia Heaberlin. I've read three of her books this year. I really enjoyed them. They weren't 5 star, but they were solid 4 stars. They are dark, which I really like. I just read The Haunting of Maddy Clare this week. Also, a solid 4 stars. I am working my way through Simone St. James books. I have two more from Libby now. I, too, have not had a banger 5 star M/T read. Although I am doing better because I read a lot of really good ones. Enjoying watching your journey. I have one more Gillian Flynn book to read. Dark Places. I hope she does more books.
For a second I thought Emily was working on a video for her beauty channel. I got excited. She has the best lipstick swatches. Even though now I don’t really wear makeup and only watch like a couple beauty channels occasionally but I would watch all of Emily’s 😂 I was so glad I stumbled on her book channel after that (before her surgery even) and I hope she always has her book channel.
2015, that's not so bad, I thought, it was only 5 years ago, I thought and then I realized... D: No shade to you, I'm just having that common feeling of "where did the time go". I'm saving Gone Girl because I've read everything else by Gillian Flynn... I hear Clawdia loud and clear. 😅 My family had a cat who was also chunky and his name was derived from that fact, and he loved being as close to our faces as possible when cuddling and would headbutt a lot. He was a white kitty and shed fur a lot so it would be hard to breathe! I love love love when you feature your cats!

Omg nobody will care but I am reading gone girl right now has been on my pile of shame also. Always makes me giddy when somebody is talking about the book i am currently reading 🥰
nooo i care, i read like a single chapter a year or two ago and it's been on my own pile of shame as well lol and this fall i've decided is the time for me to actually give it a go for real, so it feels good to not be alone haha
If you want good quality murder mysteries look at Scandinavian writers- particularly the female authors. Anne Holt, Jo Nesbo etc. There are many to choose from and I absolutely enjoy every single one!!
I agree about bad writing. I cannot stand it. Thanks for saving me from Frieda. I am not going to even try her. I just read Gone Girl this week, and loved it. They both are horrible people. I am reading Wuthering Heights right now actually, and Gone girl reminds me of that in some ways.
😂 The outfit descriptions are on the same level for me as telling me what song is playing in every scene where there is, or could be, music. Like I don’t need to know all your favourite songs, just tell me the vibe and move along.
I thought the book Gone Girl is soooo much better than the movie imho. It’s very obvious that Flynn did her research of cluster b personality constructs and features to build her characters in a very realistic way from a forensic psychology POV. Shaper Objects is my favorite, but Gone Girl is a close second. So glad you enjoyed it! ❤
My heart screams internally whenever I see your gorgeous babies! The way Charlie looks at you melts my heart! Claudia should soon be accredited for the background music. Gosh, I love them! Here is an idea: If you read all the books from the book clubs, like Resse's and Jenna's, I will be curious about their books.
When you read out the male description I pulled the same face you made and then you were like “it doesn’t sound as bad when I read it out” and I’m like oh no it does
Some readers say that Freida McFadden is the Colleen Hoover of thrillers 😂 also allegedly McFadden has plagiarised many of her books. I'd highly recommend The Last Mrs. Parrish (which was allegedly copied into the Housemaid series). Also, I'd recommend Alice Feeney, her thrillers are good. I've read and loved Rock Paper Scissors and His and Hers.
We have extremely similar tastes (I enjoy everything you rec), so I’m leaving some recs of my own for mystery/thriller! It’s really difficult to find 5 ⭐️ in this genre but I really enjoyed these Dead Woman Walking - Sharon Bolton Little Secrets - Jennifer Hillier For your own good - Samantha Downing Alias Grace - Margaret Atwood
I think you'll really enjoy Butter by Asako Yuzuki, without spoiling much of it I'd say that it has the package of a mystery thriller, but the real essence of the book lies on an exploration of gender roles, prejudices, etc
I enjoyed The September House! I thought it was a unique horror novel with some interesting thriller aspects. Perfect for this time of year! And I completely agree with your feelings towards McFadden as well. Definitely not my cup of tea.
About the doorbell, I’ll use my middle finger to push buttons but never my thumb 😂 the chunky neck cuddles, Charlie in the house, and omg the Charlie bitesss😻😻😻😻😻
Charlie reminds me of my Balthazar. He would look at me like that, and he always slept across my neck. He lived to be 16 years old. Just love seeing your beautiful kitties.
I feel you sooo much with Never Lie!! One of the worst thrillers I ever read. I read it after seeing the very high rating it has and I was thinking the whole time “why do so many people love this?”. The writing is bad, the portray of the psychologist is terrible, and the plot twist makes absolutely no sense and has no coherence whatsoever with the overall story. My theory is that this book got really popular between people completely new to the genre or just starting out their reading journey, ‘cause if you are a thriller reader or honestly you read even a few of them, they’re all better than this one 😅 Now I need to read Gone Girl, I was hesitant after knowing the “plot twist” by seeing the movie but seeing your experience I think I will genuinely like it regardless 🥰
I've read hundreds of thrillers and gave Never lie four stars! Yes, it was shallow, badly written and trashy but fun and twisty, popcorn type of thriller that you will forget in a few days time.
@@sasapejcin3568 I’m really glad you enjoyed it! Sure I wasn’t considering readers who wanted a quick, fun experience and don’t mind it being forgettable or faulty. Also it’s always fascinating to me how ratings and reading experiences are different for anyone!
I've been trying to get through the perfect marriage for 3 weeks! 😩 i knew something was off with the writing but couldn't put my finger on it, officially giving up on it
I read Gone Girl and it totally got me out of a really sad time in my relationship life. A good male revenge story was just what I needed. Lol. I read Gone Girl before Dark Places and Sharp Objects. They did not live up to the 5* that I gave to Gone Girl. Maybe if I had read them in reverse order it would be higher rating for the other two books. I was so hoping you would love Gone Girl and you did. Yay!!!
Great, you got a new fave :D Was about time, right? The cats know their stuff. When have their cuddles ever led you astray? Their cuteness for the win :D Please don't use the word psychopath to describe how someone rings a doorbell. It's weird, maybe, but I've lived with a person with antisocial personality traits and it's insanely scary and traumatising. And that person was diagnosed with autism. I don't think that diagnosis fits though. I have autism too (and person in question is my dad). If you want see what the thought patterns can be like try the romance Return Billionaire to Sender by Annika Martin. It starts off with the male love interest getting court sanctioned/mandated empathy lessons. I don't think that book should've been published as a romance, especially since the female lead thinks she can fix the dude who likes destroying living spaces and watch people get homeless. The Black Swan thingy the dude thinks about at one point? My dad used to do that too, to hurt us in place it would hurt most. This is why I just found regular verbal bullies annoying, they never hit the spot my dad did because they didn't know me that closely. And ugh to the cheating. Would put it down almost as quickly as a book with accidental pregnancy driving the romance.
I’m a big fan of the mystery/thriller genre, but I completely agree that they can be a bit trashy and badly written. But I believe there are some that rise above the pack. I recently read “In The Woods” by Tana French and it quickly became one of my favorite books ever. I found the character work, writing style, and emotional resonance to be way above the average level in the genre. I also read the next book in the series, “The Likeness”, which was also excellent. I’m also a big fan of the Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbo, which consists of 13 books that maintain a consistently high level of quality. Though if you are interested in that I recommend starting from the third book in the series, “The Redbreast”, since the general consensus among fans is that two first aren’t up to the standards of the rest of the series, and don’t contain much of consequence.
@@raquellima3632 Oh OK, I wasn’t aware of that! Yeah when it comes to Tana French I’ve heard some very conflicting opinions, so I guess she can be pretty polarizing. I absolutely love what I’ve read from her so far, but I completely understand people who don’t.
I will always watch vlogs of you hating on bad thrillers. I know you're picking these books up hoping to love them, but I would love to hear you rant about The Island by Adrian McKinty and The Teacher by Frieda ... 👀
CHARLIE! It's hard to find really good mystery/thrillers. A couple I've enjoyed in the past are People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd (about an awful mommy blogger) and WAKE by Shelley Burr, which was so good I immediately looked to see if she had any other books available.
Thanks you for being honest about Freida’s books. I always wonder who gave the green light to publish these books! And her cult following is akin to the beehive! I gave the 2 books I’ve read by her 0 stars.
You might need to invest in some quality earplugs, if Clawdia(Claudia?) is waking you up with her crying for food. My ears itch horribly with the regular foam ones, but I've had good luck with Loop plugs. There's probably some others out there to try, too.
I definitely fell for the Frieda McFadden hype about a year ago, and bought a bunch of her books after I read and liked The Housemaid. Oh boy, where were my standards? I read the second book in The Housemaids-series this summer, and I wanted to drag my eyes out.
I knew before you started that you would dislike The Perfect Marriage if bad writing (like McFadden’s) bothers you. Don’t think I made it past the first chapter. Getting it as a free read on my Kindle made it easy to DNF/delete. And as to repetitive writing (like using “swoon” too often)- one of my favorite things to do when reading on my tablet is a search when it seems like some phrase is being used annoyingly often, in order to prove to myself I’m not imagining things😂
Thriller recommendation: The River at Night by Erica Ferencik. I also could not stand The Perfect Marriage. I don't understand the hype around that one!
Salem's Lot is one of King's best works. I enjoyed it. I was recommended the Matthew Shardlake Series by C J Sansom by a friend and I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying the series.
Maybe you need to those Booktube twin tests that Megwithbooks does with other booktubers who read mysteries and thrillers so that you can find one who's recommendations you can trust. Maybe 2025 is the year of finding your twin?
I tried to read ever lie so many times and I just couldn’t. These are my 5 star books of the year: Pet by Cathrine Chidgey Monstrilio by Gerardo Samano Cordova ( horror) We used to live here by Marcus Kliewer ( more like horror) All her fault by Andrea Mara ( set in Dublin ) A great country by ship I samaya Gowda The God of the woods by Liz Moore 4 stars Nanny needed by Georgina Cross ( I put this because I still remember the plot and I enjoyed the reading)
Look in the Mirror is a suspenseful thriller that borders on horror but you might not like it. It’s very readable and again you have to suspend all disbelief. All of it lol
The only good thing about Never Lie is the twists. Everyone is supposed to be dumb and unlikable then it all makes sense in the end. You also have to suspend every bit of disbelief. Every bit lol. At least read spoilers so you can see the twists.
Finally someone who hate Freida McFadden. I've read ''The Coworker'' because of the hype and boy oh boy that was bad.... As a general rule an author who published 3 books a year is a no for me (only outlier is Brandon Sanderson) As a person with long nails I use my thumb to ring doorbell but I understand your complaint :P
@@BookswithEmilyFox I do recommend the audio book. But yay I think this one has a possibility to be at least a 4 for you as it’s a way more unique premiss
The worst part about Frieda McFadden is that she became popular on KU and then got published. (At least I think that's what happened) So it's not even a marketing machine making her popular like with some of those bland Reese Witherspoon book club thrillers (the last thing he said etc) I listened to Never Lie on audio and it made the terrible writing slightly less noticeable but I still gave it 2 stars.
You know... her books definitely give bad self published books so I can totally see this! So many fantastic books out there, it's annoying that hers are getting so much publicity. Especially since a lot of people are saying they seem VERY "INSPIRED" by other ones :/

I was so hoping you would love Gone Girl and you did. Yay!!!
Half the video, we can hear Claudia in the background... i love it 😂❤
Great, you got a new fave :D Was about time, right?
The cats know their stuff. When have their cuddles ever led you astray? Their cuteness for the win :D
Please don't use the word psychopath to describe how someone rings a doorbell.
I think you would enjoy Red Dragon maybe try the first chapter??
Emily i have a new video idea: your favorite movies and books that are similar! It’d be nice to get to know your taste in movies ❤
I also love Tana French books, especially the ones you mentioned, but I think Emily has tried them and didn't like them. She is a though crowd!
@@raquellima3632 Oh OK, I wasn’t aware of that! Yeah when it comes to Tana French I’ve heard some very conflicting opinions, so I guess she can be pretty polarizing. I absolutely love what I’ve read from her so far, but I completely understand people who don’t.
soooooo disappointed you didn’t finish the perfect marriage because the twist ending is hilarious. def look it up
I’ve had a few comments like yours so I’ll be doing a video soon where I look up spoilers of books I couldn’t finish!
@@BookswithEmilyFox yay!! looking forward to it!
Never lie was horrible!!
Gone Girl is amazing, I read it in 3 days!
Can’t say I agree with you on Amy being relatable…she’s a psychopath.
The rage she feels towards her husband is relatable. Not what she does with it lol
I recently read the other side of night by Adam Hamdy and really enjoyed it
Not mistery thriller but a plea: please pick up Oathbringer again Emily! It is so good!
I really enjoyed the grande hotel by Scott kenmore
You should read the end of the perfect marriage. Hehe
I think you will really love bandit queens by parini shroff for the "good for her" vibes
I enjoyed Red Dragon and the rest of that series, will it be your cup of tea? I’m not sure haha but I liked it
You might need to invest in some quality earplugs, if Clawdia(Claudia?) is waking you up with her crying for food. My ears itch horribly with the regular foam ones, but I've had good luck with Loop plugs. There's probably some others out there to try, too.
Luckily, she doesn’t wake me up. She usually starts around 6 AM!
I definitely fell for the Frieda McFadden hype about a year ago, and bought a bunch of her books after I read and liked The Housemaid. Oh boy, where were my standards? I read the second book in The Housemaids-series this summer, and I wanted to drag my eyes out.
It gets worse??
@@BookswithEmilyFox Oh, definetly
LOL of course it does
I knew before you started that you would dislike The Perfect Marriage if bad writing (like McFadden’s) bothers you.
If you DNF’d The Perfect Marriage, you should Google the ending it was a mess🤣🤣🤣
I might have to do a video looking up spoilers of all the books I didn't finish this year XD
exactly..what on earth even was that?!! Such a mess.
@@BookswithEmilyFoxOh yes please!!!
I'll add that to my list for October
Charlie is the best!!!🥰😍
I really enjoyed The Memory Wood by Sam Lloyd. ☺️
I love the kitties so much ❤
If you don't mind an old classic I'd try The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie.
The perfect Marriage was soooo boring at first but then it picked up.
You should give Ruth Ware a try. The most recent one I've read is Zero Days. I loved it.
Hearing the kitties go wild and I thought it was mine going off lmao
For your own good is a good one. It’s kind of funny too bc of one of the main characters
I did like it! Surprised me!
The constant meows made me question if i had a cat in my room, and I don’t have a cat😂
Your cats were driving my cats nuts. 😹😹😹
I also really enjoyed Salem's Lot. I just read it over the summer, and I was sad that I had waited so long to read it.
Maybe you need to those Booktube twin tests that Megwithbooks does with other booktubers who read mysteries and thrillers so that you can find one who's recommendations you can trust. Maybe 2025 is the year of finding your twin?
I DNF’d Never Lie early on, not my thing. I just finished All The Colors of The Dark and it was excellent.
That's on my list for the next vlog in this series! I'm hopeful I'll love it too!
My fall mystery thriller reading list was such a flop. I’m adding gone girl to the top of my tbr!
Here for the kitties and sort of the books. 😂
Try Allen Eskens, The life we bury. It is really popular
I tried to read ever lie so many times and I just couldn’t. These are my 5 star books of the year:
Pet by Cathrine Chidgey
Monstrilio by Gerardo Samano Cordova ( horror)
We used to live here by Marcus Kliewer ( more like horror)
All her fault by Andrea Mara ( set in Dublin )
A great country by ship I samaya Gowda
The God of the woods by Liz Moore
4 stars
Nanny needed by Georgina Cross ( I put this because I still remember the plot and I enjoyed the reading)
Have you read/tried They Never Learn? Mystery/Thriller is not my genre. But I did enjoy that one.
Finally someone who hate Freida McFadden. I've read ''The Coworker'' because of the hype and boy oh boy that was bad....
As a general rule an author who published 3 books a year is a no for me (only outlier is Brandon Sanderson)
As a person with long nails I use my thumb to ring doorbell but I understand your complaint :P
Sign here is a interesting one I would recommend as it’s not a normal thriller
Oh that's on my shelf... noted!
If a popular book is available on Kindle Unlimited, I've learned to skip it. The risk of wasting my time is too great.
