My grandfather was a spooky gunner 68-69 and was stationed a Da Nang at this time. There is a fifty-fifty chance that he flew this mission that night as There was only one other flight crew at the time. Practically every night of his one year in country was spent flying these overwatch and fire support missions. I have the deepest respect and admiration for the veterans of Tet. Thank you all for your sacrifices.
These gents experiences and ops tempo are insane. These guys are a different breed. The fact that any came home is a testament to their fighting spirit and a pinch of luck. These guys are fascinating to say the least.
High speed low drag Podcaster "Tilt". Fantastic!! Listen all day every day. So important to get these interviews out to the public to hear these incredible stories before these warriors move on. They surprise me every episode. Wow. No movie would do it justice. Thank you, keep 'em coming. God bless.
My dad was Gordon Highlander in Malaysia. I grew up watching this war on TV. Then reading about these battles in SOF magazine. Now I get to see and hear these guys. Amazing.
Yet another incredible Soldier that experienced overwhelming odds and lived to tell the story. I have a tremendous amount of gratitude and respect for all of these warriors!
I really really think Stephen Spielberg and Tom hanks should make a mini series based on the sog chronicles Edit: I wrote John Stryker must on Instagram and told him he should pitch his war Stories to Hollywood. His exact words are “ they don’t care”. We care. And we would love to see a high budget mini series out there. His stories and his team mates stories deserve to be remembered
Loving these podcasts as a Marine with a father who served as a combat engineer in 67, I love hearing these stories. Don't get much from the old man, never have and never pushed.
Day 27 at work straight and anytime I think about being tired or sore.....I remind myself of what these guys want through and I get my ass in gear and grind and grind and grind. Thank you for your service, your stories, and the motivation bestowed upon me when I listen to these men talk.
When you think about soldiers that were in Vietnam i think they were pretty much working the whole time. I'm sure nothing was fun about it. Especially the ground troops you're technically working the whole time. As scary as it was people on watch would fall asleep constantly, from complete exhaustion. That would be terrible knowing what you could get into if you sleep and you still pass out.
Another amazing recount of Heroism. My favorite part of these stories has got to be the chemistry in RTs between the Americans and Little People. You can tell that the bond they created was as serious as blood. Thank you Tilt and thank you Larry for letting us be a fly on the wall for this conversation amongst warriors.
Stories like this are invaluable. You can visit Marble Mountain now and there's a small set or steps to the peak that is described here. Where the SOG compound was is now a resort
Thank you for sharing this incredible story, this includes all of you. God Bless everyone serving in Vietnam for your courage, sacrifice and willingness to answer the call. We are very fortunate to have you in our corner. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🥃🥃🥃

"A sapper, also called pioneer or combat engineer, is a combatant or soldier who performs a variety of military engineering duties, such as breaching fortifications, demolitions, bridge-building, laying or clearing minefields, preparing field defenses, and road and airfield construction and repair." I had to look it up
Don't know what's the best thing you wrote, about the sappers or " I had to look it up," in other words, I didn't know. While reading I reason you were a soldier. In my perspective of life, above the military soldiers and everyone and everything in and of life humble exceeds each and every virtue and/or accomplishments and the foundation of humble is integrity.
When we arrived back in Germany after almost a year in Ramadi (11-05 to 10-06) we attended a huge event with great food and free beer to celebrate being home. It was a wonderful night and it felt great to be back. That actually made it extremely difficult for me to spend much time with the parents of one of our KIA. Most of my friends were hanging out with them telling stories, doing shots, laughing and having a great time. I tried but had to excuse myself. I found it hard to feel ok while facing the parents of one of my dead friends. I am envious of my friends who were able to do it right. I honestly believe that night helped his parents in many ways. I am grateful for their strength and courage, and glad they were able to spend that time with the parents, and just as happy that the parents had the opportunity to spend that time hearing great stories about their son from some of his greatest friends.
I thought a "sapper" was a soldier-engineer who planted explosive and whatnot to undermine fortifications. Googling this, I found that "sappers" was a term used by US soldiers to describe specially trained North Vietnamese units who combined traditional sapper skills with marine-style assault skills.
Yea its kind of an appropriation of the original term. NVA and VC sappers would use explosives though to get through the wire and take down posts. Most of the time killing themselves in the process. If you're familiar with the movie platoon, nearing the end, Dale Dye's character and his whole command post is taken out when an NVA sapper runs into their tent, blowing himself up.
What an outstanding individual! Out of all the branches the Army SF and the Marines were a step above with there capabilities when it came down to it! No disrespect to the other branches in fact my dad was the line Chief at DaNang 66-67. Thank you guys for sharing this info.
God bless Larry Trimble and all those who served in the Vietnam War. 58 thousand Americans lost their life and over a million injured. Plus when they came home a lot of our great veterans were mis treated. I feel that many of them our American heros never got the credit that they truly deserve. I humbly ask all Americans next time you see a veteran let them know how appreciative you are for their blood sweat and tears. Many died, many lost an arm, or a leg some lost their life. God bless you all Amen 🙏
Fantastic discussion! I thank all of you for the sacrifices you made. I am humbled by hearing your stories filled with uncommon bravery and skills. Because of you, we live the life we choose. God Bless you and all veterans.
I grew up with guys like you because of my father and his friends ,you guys are awesome and they don't make men like you anymore. You guys smoke the new S.F all day and everyday.
Holy shit. I was just re-listening to the old ones on his regular channel back when he got with Tilt, and the the SoGcasts. And this one came today. Steller Shit.. some of The best of men right there..
Please keep these podcasts going. Your stories are timeless and are important for showing how important it is to have guts and the will to win even if support is far away.

I first read abou this in Plaster and Tilt's books, ever since I always take a minute on August 23 to think about all the guys who were there that day. Well, maybe not all.
My Father was at Vinh Long Airfield, and was there during The Tet Offensive of 1968. He described the attacks to me. He flew Gunships for the 114th Assault Helicopter Company (Chief Warrant Officer). That Picture by my name is one of their Unit Insignias. He flew with the Assault Squadron, The Cobra's. They are the unit the subsequent Cobra Attack Helicopter was named after. Ed: You can read the official unit history called, "Knights over the Delta".
Very interesting, the Indians refer to their combat engineers as sappers. I love learning the different terms and traditions of militaries around the world.
After The Son Tay raid (and ever since) they said they "accidently" hit a school instead, coincidently it was the school where the chinese taught the NVA who did this. Y'think it might have been payback!
In Rolla Missouri we have a veterans park with different plaques for different units and different services. I’d love to see the SOA send info so we could get a plaque and memorial set up. If it interests you reply here and we will get togather and I will get with the vfw and others about it and if it can be done love to see you guys come. Larry, you did silence the Mortors, what you did was amazing, and to march down to that mortor pit and not only silence it, you took the damn thing, I would think your action was atleast a Distinguished service cross. you are a very Humble warrior.
I just want to say, these are the best war stories. Tilt has gotten so much better with the audio and the pace of these podcasts. I have a question. As a civilian my whole life (not for lack of trying) is ot ok to wear a macvsog baseball cap, even though I was born 6 years after it was dissolved?
