This video has some gems! Especially about having a reflector holder! It’s so much more convenient to set it, leave it, & let you model move freely & relax so you can get the shot you want!

Years pass and I cannot believe how great an consistent results you get with gear you already have. You are great example how to not fall in Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

Its not about the gear and we all know that. I guess sometimes people get stack with that idea and they have hard time to overcome that.

Your in home studio setup is so similar to ours in square footage with the exception of patio doors BEHIND the setup, which we must block. Clients are immediately put at ease and conversations begin around our three Bengal cats and their overhead catwalks; these felines are "ice breakers" and their antics have our clients laughing!

I’ve seen your beautiful headshots and got so excited to watch this video. Thank you for your thoughts on the Rembrandt and clamshell lighting setups. I am photographing a high school senior studio session tomorrow. While I’ve done many of these, which setup do YOU recommend? And, are your lights on wheels? When you change their placement looking left/right, do you flip your lights? Thank you!!!

Another very inspiring video, which shows that you don't need expensive equipment for very good results. The marketing teams of the companies, who also present expensive equipment as the most important tool in some videos, may be annoyed about this. Thanks so much an keep safe an sound. Greets Rainer

Thanks for that, interesting break-down. As for the key light in the first rembrandt version, do you usually feather it? It looks like it in this setup? Also, is it important to keep the reflector/fill light in the middle of the model? I've seen some keep it on the side as well...sort of a clamshell setup where everything has been moved to the side. But I can imagine the shadow side of the face is not getting enough fill with such a setup?

I have the teaching tutorial by Dylan Patrick and he shows where it was too windy outdoors during his shoot that he had the subject hold the reflector and his images still look stellar: one of his speedlights were sandbagged to keep from blowing over and the other was steadied by an assistant. It turned out great.

I agree 100% with the buy a reflector stand.
Have never understood the mentality that the client or model can hold the reflector. No as it fixes the position of the arms and shoulders.
Why the hell would someone call clam shell flat? It depends on the position of the key and the none active fill/reflector.

What focal length do you typically use for your headshots? I find that I want use a long lens for the benefits of flattening the face but then I have to place myself far away from my subjects. I don’t mind that but when I set up with a butterfly setup. My modifiers are very much in the way. And if I back them up towards the camera, they end up being too far from the subject. Any advice on balancing distance when using a butterfly setup?

    • @sonriephotography9680

@@RafalWegiel Wow - that is a tight focal length. I don't always have that much room to zoom in that tight. I guess the point is that you shoot up to 200mm by preference so that will be a good guide for me to get as tight (zoomed in) as I can for next shoot. Thanks!

Thanks for your opinion and your video. I heavily disagree with you on the reflector holder. I DO let my models hold the reflector, especially when they are unexperienced. Firstly, they have something that distracts them which means helping to relax and secondly, holding the reflector helps them posing, because they automatically brings their shoulders back und their chest in forward.
