    My first experience with the inside of a freehub was like this; I was riding my brand new Trek Remedy that came with a dork disk. That disk came loose and annyoed the crap of me so I decided to remove it on-trail. I did'nt have a knife or a cutter, so I used a sharp rock to try to cut it off. Suddenly the whole dork disc came loose, and so did the freehub with all its pawls and spring, littered on the muddy, sandy trail. I had never imagined to see such delicate parts on my bike! Surely I thought i was fcked! Some of the pawl springs was also strecthed. By some mircaly using a tiny stick to guide the springs and pawls back(yes i found all the springs and pawls), I was able to reassemble it and the hub worked for the next 3-4 years i had the bike!

      You're right it is 'pawls.' We wrote pawls in the description but missed the ones on the video! A chain lube is common practice, alternatively a thin grease, spread very thinly with something like a paintbrush works too.

    Would a spray lubricant applied to the chain with minimal application, could that ifiltrate the freehub to dilute the grease applied to the freehub at manufacture? In other words, how easy is it for the freehub to be infected by external contaminants?

    Awesome video , just got back from a ride and my chain would slip . I know it’s not the gears or the chain cuz I replaced them last October ( we have long winters here so I haven’t been riding much ) . Oh Doddy! Thanks for this! I’ve recently cleaned up my freewheel on my DTSwiss hub. Thought I’d done a good job as I’d got rid of that loud click which I find annoying. It works ok though. Guess I’ll be taking the wheel off and starting again, this time without a ton of grease!

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  7 років тому +2

      A lot of grease will make it a bit quieter yes, but the trade off is that more grease will hold on to more dirt. On the other hand, not enough lubricant will promote excessive wear (and a very loud noise!). There's a happy middle ground as demonstrated here :)

      Although there was small amounts of sticky grease inside the springs and pawls that would slow the movement down, you're right in saying there wasn't as much dirt as should be expected in there. We'd suggest doing this every 3-4 months depending on ride time. Not super regularly!

      Depends. Shimano says their new freehubs are not user serviceable, but the older ones were. It requires a large hex key to take the freehub off and depending on model, a specific "freehub service tool" that Shimano no longer produces. I think most just replace the freehub since it's not that expensive.

    Hey, That sthe exact brand of wheel I have. Except Im dealing with the Front wheel instead of the back. ..... My front wheel is grinding like crazy & will barely spin. ... I looked at the bearings & it appears to be missing one ball bearing on each side ......it only has 8 per side. Do you know how many ball bearings go on each side on the Front wheel?
    Id rather just order NEW ball bearings since theyre Grindy & need servicing ...... Do you, or anyone else here know What I should look for when ordering the Ball bearings for my front hub?? they look like standard ball bearings but not sure if this Antaj front hub takes a specific size ball bearing. -any advice?? Dying to get riding again but stuck with these crappy bearings.

    can i get more stiffer springs so my hub is louder?

    • @mxs4193
      @mxs4193 5 років тому

      :D not sure about that but I think you could try to bend the springs out just a bit to make them push more.

    #AskGMBN My bottom bracket makes a squeaking noise, but I don't have the necessary removal tools.
    I believe it's the BB because when I pedal with pressure it sounds like it's coming from there.
    Is there any possible way to stop the squeaking, or is it something else?
    You probably won't answer, but it's worth a try! ;)

      Bike Stuff You can try taking just the cranks off and cleaning and lightly greasing all the surfaces that connect to the spindle. Then re-install and tighten down. If it's still creaking then you'll have to get the right bb tool. They're not too expensive.
