  • Everybody Hates Superman! (My Adventures With Superman) | Season 1 of My Adventures With Superman used its plot to explore a question lots of superhero fans have been asking: Is Superman too good to believe? The idea of Superman being too good to be true has given way to so many different takes on his archetype, -- like Superman is lame unless he's evil Superman, for example -- that My Adventures With Superman uses it to address the character directly, including how characters in his circle -- Lois Lane included -- are also affected by it. It just so happens to be a real good allegory for patriarchy as well!

This really is the best Superman media in years. Not only does it not feel locked into the canon, so there's a ton of surprises that we can be in store for, its just so... earnest. One exchange in particular exemplifies it for me:
(After Clark takes a laser minigun to the chest protecting Lois, destroying his hoodie and shirt, as the camera is so very intent on showing us)
Lois: How'd you know you'd be bulletproof?
    Clark: I didn't, I just knew that you weren't.
Or a later episode, when his super-hearing kicks in, and he wears himself out helping as many people as possible. He... just can't not help people. And that genuine earnestness, it was something that was so missing from so much Superman shows and films these days...

Yes. Superman doesn't work as a cynical character.
He is a good man. You cannot have a Superman who isn't a good man (looking at you Snyder) and still have Superman.

Everyone who hates on Superman for being the moral pillar he is is doing so because they all wish they were Superman, but do whatever they want...i.e. they really want to be Lex Luthor.

EXACTLY. And THAT is why to me Lex can be such an effective nemesis. Every fight the two have is a reassurance of Superman’s sheer unbridled altruism in the face of Lex’s corporate cynicism born out of an oppressive system that seeks to satisfy the worst impulses of man to hoard, hurt, and distrust while misusing power that was in itself Ill-gotten.

My adventures with Superman is a great Superman series that not only understands who Superman is and what he stands for, but it just allows Superman to be a person who wants to help people and try to do the right thing, which is a much-needed representation of the character. There is nothing wrong with Superman just being a good guy who wants to help people and try to do the right thing. That's what's really needed in our everyday world. I honestly can't wait for season 2.

My graduate thesis was on Superman and why we need reconstructive takes on the archetype as we've gotten so many deconstructions (Superman... but he's evil). After consuming so much Superman media that got it right and a lot that got it wrong, My Adventures With Superman was a great addition to the list of media that got it right. My only major gripe was in its rogues gallery but every time Superman was on screen, every interaction with Lois and Jimmy, I smiled from ear to ear. Seeing the story about xenophobia on its face and then being able to engage with the layers and subtext of patriarchy functioning in that just shows how much they understood the character, though I am always wary when we jump to the exploration of "He might go bad" especially with how much it's been done. Even in Superman & Lois, the main conflict for the antagonist is having engaged with a Superman who went bad. I don't know if its exhaustion at that exploration or wishing that we just didn't need the juxtaposition with Superman directly especially when Zod or any number of Superman villains can serve as that direct cracked mirror.
Thanks for the video and for sharing the analysis!

Before this show I was a casual fan of Superman as a pop culture icon, but this show made me love the character and metropolis! I started reading his current Dawn of DC series all because I found a new appreciation for the character. This is why good adaptations that understand the characters are important.

Like really hard. Because im one of those individuals who does his best to be good and help people with no agenda. I lost friends because of it , due to their dislike of me from their jealousy. And at a time i felt bad, until my therapist and friends told me otherwise.
I got better , but it sucks to know you can still do good be mistreated by some people who have such an ignorant mindset to you because of it. But you can rise above that at least .

Thank you for talking of how Lois was meant to be a flawed character - she needs to go through her arc and not become like Vicki Vale. Or if you go by her alternate selves… like her father was; it’s so important to see that if she closed off herself she could have been adjacent to what he and Waller were, ruthlessly mistrusting before considering the alternative. Sam Lane pre-Zero Day was a LOT like his daughter, rule-breaking and kind of a goof, and the trauma of that changed him; Lois breaks that cycle, and even gets through to her dad, after her own self-reflection (which included both seeing more “successful” versions of her, being disillusioned by Vicki, and so on) enabled her to be more open to that change herself.

*Edit:* Minor quibble - Superman's mom is Lara Lor-Van. Zor-El is Supes' uncle and Supergirl's dad (and his wife was Alura In-Ze). Kryptonians use patronyms (similar to Russians), and don't really do the whole "spouse takes the other's family name" thing.

After quite a rough year, I loved this show. Nice people being nice and doing good things. Sometimes that's all I would like to see. No one being edgy, an asshole, or whatever. Kindness for the good feels. These last two years really just let me see how honestly kind of rare that is at the moment in a lot of media I had been watching and reminded me about having fell out of comics for a while in the 90's. Also why I haven't and prob never will watch the boys. I don't really want to watch people be willingly shitty as often tbh. There's enough of that goin' on outside the screen.
All that and also it's always good to see main characters, especially ones who're so powerful preaching kindness for the sake of it. As a dude with elderly parents (even in HS they were in their 50's) that "masculinity for the show of it" shit was tiring and toxic. Gave me a few dumber ideas I dropped thankfully before my 30's but that shit does follow you and you have to be vigilant 'cause it can still sneak up on you in the oddest situations. Good vid as usual!

However the corporate (and musical) leaders of their city refuse to allow them to play any kind of rock music at all if they want to be able to perform. Its very fun!

I really liked this show, and in particular I loved the characterization of Lois and Clark. I liked how this analysis frames superman as challenging the patriarchy because on the surface, one wouldn't expect him to be a challenge when he seems to represent the masculine ideal- he's strong, conventionally handsome, defeats bad guys and he's a hero who protects women and children (well, he protects everyone).
At first while watching I was sort of intrigued by how a lot of the antagonists were people I could empathize with, because I too am wary when around people with a disproportionate amount of power and little to no way of holding them accountable (and who wear predominately blue uniforms). But as the show went on, I thought a better way of framing the prejudice against Superman less as "what if a cop worked only for himself and also he had heat vision" and more along the lines of "is it really fair to project a fear like this onto an individual just for things they cannot control, that are part of their physical reality" and when I followed that train of thought, I started viewing this iteration of Superman as more of an argument against bio-essentialism and a queer allegory. Viewing him as guilty until proven innocent because of factors outside of his control reminds me a lot of how bigotry manifests against men of color, and trans women in particular, both of whom are assumed to be a danger to cis, white women. (Although other types of bigotry are comparable as well). So I think it was a really smart writing choice to have the antagonists expressing these fears include people in the military, because any fear they could project onto Superman for having too much power, too little accountability, etc. can apply just as much, if not moreseo, to them as an institution (demonstrated particularly well when they almost prevented Superman from saving a large amount of civilians, including a school bus full of children). (sorry for the long rambling comment, turns out I had more thoughts about this than I thought I would).

The Evil Superman trope is interesting, but the core idea behind it has always baffled me because it seems to come from people who would abuse power at the drop of a dime if they had access to it. That honestly scares me a lot more than Superman ever could because an alarming amount of people sincerely believe it’s impossible to be a decent human being because you genuinely want to.

  • @Swenglish
    @Swenglish 3 місяці тому +1

"Patriarchy doesn't just affect men" is an interesting way to put it. It's true, but typically, "patriarchy doesn't just affect women" is what tends to need pointing out. I guess it depends what you mean by "affect". It generally affects men and women differently, because it places different restrictive expectations on men and women (and pushes everyone into those restrictive categories whether they like it or not), but I've found that the common mistake people make is to assume that patriarchy refers to some kind of conspiracy of men against women (which is an oversimplification of a complex and highly conditional hierarchy built on an implicit system of values, biases, norms and stereotypes), not that it's something that only impacts men.

    • @Swenglish

Oh, nerdy side note, Lara's last name is not Zor-El. Zor-El is Jor-El's brother and Supergirl's father (and last name). Lara's maiden name is (typically) Lara Lor-Van, with Lor-Van also being her father's full name. It's...Kryptonian patriarchy stuff.
And the idea of Brainiac being from Krypton came from the '90s animated series.

I think the thing that irks me about Superman is not that he's always good, but that he's invulnerable. And also, his stories are often written to have a clear-cut "good choice", which removes any tough decision making he might have to do.
Compared to a character like Colossus from the X-Men, who is a pretty close equivalent to the "farmboy with special powers who just wants to help with no ulterior motives", Superman has no equivalent to Colossus's choice to sacrifice himself to save other mutants from the legacy virus.
I think a character like Superman is important and I get why he appeals to some people. He's just, in my opinion, kinda boring due to the combination of his unequivocal "goodness" and his invulnerability.
And, with all of that said, I'm still curious about this show. DC has impressed me a lot with their animated shows, so I think if I'm going to enjoy Superman media this might be the one.

I'm one of those "I don't like Superman" people, but I did like this Superman, because his flaws are much more obvious, and he's made a lot more weak than he seems to normally be portrayed. (I mean he struggles against those robots) However, honestly, I think the main reason I don't like Superman, is because my entire life, the things that I don't care about for superman are constantly spoken about and debated by superman fans, and the stuff I like about superman are either belittled or were stated as "Not Superman like", and because I am not attached to the character enough, it's just easier to take their word for it as "That is superman".
It doesn't help that I also see him as "Super (White) Cop", even though I factually know him as "Jewish Everyman that wants to just fit in", and that has ironically pushed me more into a Batman fan, even though I factually know Batman is technically "Super Cop". (It's just traditionally Superman has been portrayed as always with the cops, always with the military, and always knowing who is the bad guy or the good guy when arriving on the scene without even having to ask many questions. Vs. Batman, the real "super cop", who is often at odds with the cops, does detective work to prove who _is_ the bad guy, even when it isn't obvious, and isn't shown as all powerful or needs a rogue to be all powerful to get an advantage over him.
However, anyways, back to this show, another reason why I like it is because Lois and Jimmy are made about as much as important, with not only their lives woven into the plots, but also their success, discoveries, and contributions being essential to a positive resolution of the plots. It also does what I've always begged Superman media to do, which is to make Lois relevant equally to Superman, but in ways that highlight what she is good at and what she can do, but Superman cannot, what Clark cannot, to make them an actual team, and not just a romantic pairing that kind of felt like a 50s dynamic of the husband Superman kind of letting Louis have her little adventures, until he has to come in and fix everything (as he was always right). Comics, you can kind of get whatever Superman you want, but in their other media: movies, cartoons, etc, they only really portray superman one or two ways: the Aspirational Boy Scout or the Jaded.Boy Scout ("I didn't ask to be a god", god).
That said, when I watched My Adventures with Superman, I never thought of a Patriarchal Allegory. I think it's good and interesting, definitely fun to look out for, doesn't feel that obvious or defined to me. There was a lot of "Don't trust the other" stuff in there, but I don't know how much an allegory for an Anti-Patriarchal story felt in there more than just general, modern anti-patriarchal stuff that you could find in an Adventure Time or Netflix She-Ra episode. I didn't feel a sense of "persons of this stature should always be this way". That said, I did feel like Superman kind of felt like an Allyship allegory, but I didn't think it was intended... but he's always supporting Louis and Jimmy, kind of symbology for Women's and Black Rights, he always wants to do what is right, there are elements of himself that feel different and similar to Louis and Jimmy's struggles to fit in with the society they want, he kind of has a meltdown when he discovers things about his history, but he's always trying. It feels like an "allyship" allegory written from a white, possibly queer white, perspective. I don't know how intentional it is, but it was something I was trying to ignore while enjoying the show, because that almost feels like it's trying to virtue signal or at least reward what is the right thing to do, and I kind of feel like we shouldn't always be looking for a reward, or to be the main character, super hero, in the story of our lives, sometimes it's better to acknowledge other people exist or that it's just good to do good, instead of thinking we are going to get paid back for our good deeds somehow in return (and then not get or see those expectations met, and then turn against those belief and be bitter or jaded or entitled there on).
That said, of those future ideas teased for season 2 that you showed me, I wish they could just do the thing. I wish it wasn't a Brainiac clone. I wish it was just his mom, I wish that his dad would have agreed with his mom had he still be alive, but maybe some regrets for how things of a War Mongering Krypton has ended up gave him a last min. pause to change course, maybe even not and just have the arrogance that even a baby of Krypton would conquer that little planet a la dragon ball. (I wish some of his Rage to help Krypton be driven over the edge could have been over his wife being sacrificed to be in this system. That due to timey-whimy stuff, people back on Krypton thought that whole fleet was destroyed on the way to conquer this new planet they could live this new peaceful and better existence, as long as they conquered this last planet, kind of narrative) Admittedly, even though I know that was also a part of Superman, and a reference to superman from Dragonball, I remember that moment of learning his people are conquerors and might have sent him there to be one felt Dragonball-ish in a full circle kind of way. (And I thought that would have been a fun nod through comic book history, to come around and reference those you inspired, if not slightly like a tip of a hat)

Ok while humqnizing superman is very good, yes he is a good person raised by amazin parents and yes he has a seeming endless patience. But he shows cracks, and needs a support system, and striuggles. all that he does. But also yes he is that good. Its even explaine how could be, good person, raised well, with good morals. Yeah good people, that good people do exist.
And i dont think people re usually that and its bettter to not expect it always, but people can be good, just because. And superman is just a symbol and a paragon, but goofd hardworking immigrants do exist.
He is a hardworking immigrant too. That exyist plenty, as much media tries to paint otherwise.

Lex Luther’s reason for hating Superman in BvS was that he couldn’t come to term with someone with that much power being good also in justice league unlimited Amanda Waller constantly questioned the motives of Superman/JLU altruistic nature so did The Question and it was huge plot narrative. I dont like superman, because no one, not even the best person, should be as powerful as superman is. The comics version annoys me and people clamp onto superman being great because he has so much power and he does good with it. I like my adventure with superman because its humanized him to a more believable degree.
Everyone should strive to be kind and helpful like superman, in their own ways of course. The ideals that superman lives for are the core themes of my adventures with superman and why hes my favorite version. The show focuses on his kindness and his generosity and less on his ability to smash and bash. He gets his ass handed to him quite a lot and he struggles to do good.
Also can we honestly say that wed be comfortable with an overpowered cop with a cape flying above us and watching our every move? Nuh uh. Im good. That just shows how much people dont understand that you dont need an all powerful guy to fix our own societal problems.

How are you comparing Superman to a cop? Also, Superman is part of "our" society as well.

    • @LightGlyphRasengan
      @LightGlyphRasengan 3 місяці тому

@nalday2534 every super hero is a cop with a cape. You're putting your authority in stopping crime but not preventing it at the root. Superman is above everyone with the power he holds. It's an imbalance. I don't think Superman should be harangued for simply existing how he does what with his kryptonian genes, but its more complicated when he exerts his will on society. Thats why I stress that this version of Superman is a far more superior image to his origins as an immigrant than his newer iterations where he blows up planets and fights gods

@@LightGlyphRasengan nah superman ain't a cop if he ain't working with the gov and many versions don't it really depends if he sees himself above the law(.I know cops do that as their mo but they also have the backing of a government who agrees that the law is meant to be broken) Superman doesn't.
He's a a wild vigilante who does whatever he wants, he's more likes super powerful private rich billionaire flying above us with a cape. Tho I agree their methods aren't helpful, tho not directly harmful like the methods of cops

      What is a toxic person?
A toxic person is anyone whose behavior adds negativity and upset to your life. Many times, people who are toxic are dealing with their own stresses and traumas. To do this, they act in ways that don't present them in the best light and usually upset others along the way.
