Restoration Scrap Some people just like being critical for no good reason. Or they think ‘Why isn’t he wearing steel-toed boots and goggles? Or, ‘Why didn’t he test for lead in the paint?’. Sometimes they are applying their own expectations and standards to how other people do things, and sometimes those expectations and standards are unrealistic’. Keep going, but keep safe while you’re doing it.
Cause you didn´t prelube the pistons or used a steel instead of rubber mallet or let sealant get into the cylinder. I dind´t dislike but I think this partially inaccurate work led people to dislike your video.
you do good work man. I would use a much heavier gage power cord though. I think a lot of people that dislike videos are just ignorant douchebags, don't let them get to you.
Big thumbs up from London uk what a restoration to turn something from a pile of rust into something that fantastic deserves a round of applause thanks for sharing your talents all the best stay safe god bless
Over the years I have watched quite a few restoration videos of all sorts of everything here on UA-cam. I am truly impressed with the workmanship that has gone into the restoration of this compressor. It looks as good as new, complete with all the important stickers including the brand sticker. Well done Restoration Scrap, keep the restoration videos coming.
Good job overall. But for your own safety, please check the air reservoir internally for corrosion - if it has, then replace it. Also, you will benefit a lot by using freeze spray and also a polyurethane mallot to fit bearings onto the crankshaft - not only a lighter job but also preventing damages to all parts.
If you don't hydrostat it to at least 400 PSI DON'T PUT ANY AIR IN IT. It's not that hard to do. If you don't care about yourself and your people give the kids that walk down the street in front of your shop a break.
Should have pre lubed the engine parts. Matched, marked the piston direction to the rods and heads. Rubber mallet with a wood block instead of beating with a metal hammer. Wrap the shaft also before putting in a vise or use soft jaws to prevent damage. Would be nice if you could sand blast parts first. Good job though. Lots of work. Keep it up.
Good interesting video. I like that you restore what is for most people, junk, into useable items again. Don’t pay attention to the dislikes, you are doing well.
And, (sorry for the 2nd comment, .. I ran an auto, truck & marine electrical repair shop for a few years..) especially after cleaning with a solvent, re-insulate the stator windings with ..at least a spray lacquer. There is also an armature / stator spray insulator spray ( I think Krylon..) .. available in red or clear.. that is tested to over 200 degrees C
Hei man... u are awesome, u don't have more tools. But u done it from what ever u have. So be brave and go forward... don't feel about the dislikes.. keep go and rock it... as ur own way
Enjoyed every minute- great camera work, procedure. Even the soundtrack was okay. Subscribed. Your talent with elemental tools was very skillful. You cut no corners!! Thanks
I always like watching your videos and think you a great job with what you have...interesting hammer there, cool...it works just like a new one great job.
Well done dude... Seems like hai phong or Hanoi in Vietnam... I would maybe use rubber mallets on pieces of the engine. It was hard to watch that part... Otherwise great job. Sure through UA-cam I took apart my whole lawnmower bridges Stratton and fixed an oil leak in the engine. It's thanks to channels like this that we realise it is possible, you just need patience and be meticulous in your organisation of what you take apart
Great job with the tools and means that you have! My only comment to you would be to take care of your tools- those needle nose pliers are rusting away! You do excellent work with what you have- take some time to restore your own tools and vise.
Nice restoration :) be interested in how much it actually cost, as from my personal experience unless its a commerical level they are not worth restoring (where i live anyway as its so costly for parts) or obviously for personal use Although i must say most of my restored 1950's equipment will outlive me for sure
You do a great job on your videos. I did see an error. When you were putting the bearings on the crankshaft you were poundind them on with a hammer. You should not do that. Crankshafts are harmonically balanced when you hit them with a hammer it will crack the weights on the crankshaft a put it out of balance and the crack could be very tiny.. You are setting it up to fail at a later time. Doing it correctly you need to have a bearing presser. It is almost like a bearing puller.
"If there are any errors in the video please let us know." There are a few mistakes. 1) NEVER hammer bearings or the crankshaft! To get the bearings off: heat them up a little. To get the bearings on: again heat them up, or put the crankshaft in a freezer. 2) Gaskets & sealant: it's a common mistake to use both. It's either one or the other (the cylinder base probably needs a gasket, otherwise the cylinder will sit too low/the piston will go too high). And: never use two gaskets, you increase the distance and lose compression. 3) Be more gentle, take your time. Use plastic or wood on metal much more.
Overall not a bad video and great to see a young man trying to get an old machine working. Due to your lack of experience, I will share some things to consider next time you rebuild any machine. 1. when you assemble the internal components of a compressor or engine you should always lubricate the moving parts to prevent premature failure due to running dry the very first time, especially bearing surfaces of pistons, piston rods, and wrist pins. 2. Never beat on a cast-iron pulley, it could cause cracks that are not easily visible that could cause failure when in operation. 3. NEVER use extension cord wire to power any tool or shop equipment, it could cause a fire, one because they normally don't carry enough power to run the equipment safely and two they are easy to cut when pinched, use the proper wiring, refer to what it had before or consult the manufacturer, short of these options go look at comparable equipment and get an idea of what you need for the apparatus. 4. Before you reuse any tank that holds compressed air, have the tank pressured up to at least 10 PSI above the highest rating for the tank. This is to find out if it is structurally safe to rebuild. While pumping it please make sure the pressure relief valves are in place and by all means DO NOT stay present in the room it is in, or do it outside at least 100Ft away from any person or vehicle. If this tank explodes due to internal corrosion that goes through the wall thickness it goes off like a bomb, it can hurt or kill you. This last one you must do at your own risk but remember that if it is not done it could explode later when innocent people are around.
Good job looks nice .... My only concern is the amount of rusty water you emptied out, and you have not shown where you inspected the inside of the receiver ? ...... i take it you did ? Iv'e had the misfortune of witnessing a small 50 litre tank explode, and it's not pretty !
You should not even start a grinder without eye protection my friend, whether your cutting or brushing. Nice video!! To be a young chap you seem to have a good handle on it. It looks like a well designed compressor, its made for working on. I think one might be skeptical of some of the older air tanks. I have a wheel barrow gas driven 5 hp that had a leaking tank. I welded it a few times but have become afraid to continue using it without new tanks.
Your doing a great job ! It's the wrong cord again. I can understand if you don't have the money to buy one or there is no hardware store around, but that's nothing compared to loosing an eye. You really have to get some safety glasses. It just takes a split second for a wire to come off your grinder and poke you in the eye.
If the condensed water comes out that brown, the inside of the pressure bowl is rusted. That means it isnt safe any more andccan blow up anytime when it comes under pressure .
Ok some quick info. If that motor is aprox. 2 hp and your using 220v, that would equal 1491 watts, which equals 6.7 amps. The lamp cord you are using is 18 gauge. That cord is rated for 5 amps, so your going to burn up the cord and short out. This is why there are so many fires at Christmas time, too many lights on a small cord means high amperage.
Nice job, i enjoyed that. But the state of that crap that came out that tank, id be thinking about replacing it. Very similar to how mine was, which developed a crack right where the motor mount bracket is welded to the tank. Im gonna cut it open 2moro, as im curious to see how bad it is inside.
Your skill is very good.. nice work!! But please leave the copper finned tuning connecting the 2 cylinders naked!!.. NO paint.. It is finned for heat dissipation.. to get rid of heat created by the compressed air in the 1st stage of the compressor. Paint just insulates the tube and it can't get rid of that heat. Otherwise, very good work.
You do a great job. With some mistakes, too. Follow the positve advices among the comments and forget the others. Restoration is an art. You will get to it later. Follow also the Occidental masters.
I'm loving the restoration on the compressor. The only thing I might add is maybe a more heavy duty power cord. The one on there seems a bit too light for that motor.
A good and enjoyable video just a couple of comments though, it's not a good idea to hammer the web of the crankshaft to remove bearings. Make yourself some soft jaws for your vice as you are risking damaging the journals of the crankshaft in the vice, Use any thin scrap metal you have or a couple of pieces of rubber will do. Good luck for the future you deserve it
WOW! That's an amazing-hard job! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. One question... what about the state of the air tank inside? I saw another video which the tank exploded because was very rusted inside.
Hello, I want to make a maintenance of an old compressor assembled in Spain arround 30 years ago and your video is being very useful to identify parts. I agree, its a way of life in asia.....everywhere you go people make junk good to make a living...I live there....and it amazes me what I see.
He should pay attention to constructive suggestions though, ie the testing of the receiver and such like.
ماشاء الله تبارك الله
ولكم جزيل الشكر والتقدير والمحبة على هذا
كل الاحترام والتقدير
Looks very nice.. but you should of shown a way t otest the tank and atleast put a probe inside to see if its all rusty or in good condition.
You made the job look simple...I like the way you handle the T-Bar wrench...

Beautiful!! We don't have to throw everything away.
I have created a video I want you to watch 🥰
Apart from the way you put on the bearings..........nice job...!
Man that thing is OLD! Thank you for bringing it back to life
Handy tip. Its easier to paint the parts prior to reassembly .
Thumbs up on the work. You did forget to replace the missing guard over the belt and pulleys tho.
excellent job on the restoration of Air Compressor
fantastic restoration mate great job your detail work is brilliant just like new your work is great all the best
