@@youraveragegrandma568 Well I would say I feel bad since the only people I know that speak a language other than Vietnamese in Vietnam are students or foreigners, but I'm guessing you didn't really grow up in an area with a lot of Vietnamese-speaking people.
I've heard of Bao. She posted a VERY thirsty tweet about how much she likes Blaidd from Elden Ring. That tweet was so thirsty it made the Shahara Desert look wet. And some people paid for Blaidds voice actor to respond to the tweet as Blaidd. It was hilarious.
Vietnamese people here in the states barely know Vietnamese unless they lived in areas with a big Vietnamese community. I’m from the southeast and there was like two other Vietnamese people that I didn’t get along with, but they didn’t know Vietnamese that well either. It’s just what happens when the only people you would use Vietnamese with is your family, but they are also learning English due to the area not having Vietnamese people.

@@Redmanticore I stated it when I said in the states and I’m from the Southeast???? Sure your family might be strict and teach you Spanish anyway, but you won’t have any practical use outside of your family until you live somewhere else. Vietnamese people are scattered with only big pockets appearing in bigger cities. Smaller cities like where I grew up you would be lucky to have any Vietnamese people near your age.
Because language you learn is based on what community you grow up in. If you're a Vietnamese who grew up in Japan, you would speak Japanese. If you are a Vietnamese who grew up in Russia, you'll speak Russian. If you're a Vietnamese who grew up in American, you'll speak English. It's not rocket science. It's simple logic. I'd be amazed if Bao grew up in America and not be able to speak a single English. That's something.
I’m technically bilingual even though I’m a Vietnamese born and raise. And I will offer this advice, don’t pay attention to people who criticize your Vietnamese especially if that person is a Vietnamese born and raise like me because unless you were taught as baby, you can never nail down the proper pronunciation due to our grammar system. This is the conclusion I drawn from 4 years of teaching Vietnamese.
For some reason this could explain why they are so attached to the language that they are extremely prominent with Karaoke at dinner parties that is hosted in Chinese restaurants or banquet halls here in Canada... As a Vietnamese born and raised in Vietnam, Bao is a sweet girl. I found out about her Vietnamese heritage and the way she trying to speak Vietnamese is really cute. I was never wanted her to push herself to speak Vietnamese. After all, my philosophy is you do you, she can speak Vietnamese whenever she feel like it. On the topic of the "thing" that angered the stupid Vietnamese twitter, to my brothers and sisters here, we call them "bò đỏ". These are the people who hate other people for saying stuffs wrong. So what I found out is she said Chinese new year instead of Lunar new year and somehow that angered them. I mean wtf, it's the same damn thing :v
joke on u they're not the same, there is a reason for not only the Vietnamese but many other Asian countries using the lunar calendar to go against the name Chinese New Year. Do more research. Going around splurting the term "bò đỏ" does not make you look any more good, cái loại phản động. And to all other people thinking Bao is getting harassed bc she does not consider Vietnamese as her native tongue, no it's not that, this happens bc, first, she used the term "Chinese New Year", which many Vietnamese people consider a sign of cultural appropriation. To be simple, she used a sensitive term. Now she released a cover in Vietnamese hoping it to be viral, indicating even more that she does not care that much about the Vietnamese community - using a sensitive term relevant to many sensitive topics (politics and culture appropriation namely) and now hoping for support. To be clear I have just known about this situation for a few last minutes and I agree that the ones coming at her are too triggered, but to be frank, Bao's negligence is what brings her this trouble. She should be more conscious about the community she is aiming for.
Chinese New Year is just what Westerners have historically called Lunar New Year. Lunar New Year is politically correct, but lots of people still say Chinese New Year because that's what they have said for so long.

I don't know the full context of what happened, but saw and followed a bunch of discussion about it in several places. The long story short is a bunch of Vietnamese people said that Vietnam has a big online nationalist population similar to China, as in they take everything as a personal insult and unanimously band together to try and shame people off the internet. In Bao's situation some people mentioned a slight translation error that can be common in non native Viet speakers due to words with multiple meanings which change with context.

“You’re of Vietnamese descent, so Vietnamese must be your native tongue”? Dude, if you don’t see how racist that is, I don’t know what to tell you. My grandmother was purely Spanish, but she was born and raised in America, and while Spanish used to be her native tongue, she ended up speaking so much English and so little Spanish that she ended up speaking English better than Spanish by the time I was around. My mom (her daughter) also doesn’t know much Spanish. It’s like being a certain ethnicity doesn’t say anything about what languages you know.

It's normal to see bullies like this honestly, as a Vietnamese, and have been spectating hate groups here, the toxicity of the Vietnamese internet community is insane. the amount of people that go balls nut about some Viet-foreign people that can't speak Vietnamese and know every little fucking bit about the culture is almost 80%. I love my country alright, but to get to the level of patriotism that the whole media shits on your bloodline, because you moved to a different country to change your life, is insane, Viet name is a developing country, and life is evolving step by step to be better, but it's by no means the best, I've been to South Korea and see how advanced they are, understand why these people want to live in other places, but my god the hate they got back is no crazy that you understand why these people don't intend and want to come back. Not to be one-sided here, the hate is not all for nothing, back in 1973 when the war is on the verge of ending, the American soldiers move back to their home land and a large amount of south vietnam folkes flee along too, they have seen how advanced and rich America is that they accept to leave everything behind, Bao here is not exactly a victim of this but her voice and personality is that of a south-vietnamese . And the "three stripe" society or the corrupt vietnam depends on how you like to call it, they like to make a scene every year on foreign land, bragging propaganda and shitting on the current vietnam system, that's where the hate come from, so it's not Bao as an individual that makes up all this heat, it's the community of the 'three stripes" that makes a bad image for her. Let me break it down. People are mad and calling her traiter because she accidentally said "CNY" instead of "LNY" (chinese new year and lunar new year) which because apparently LNY is celebrated by VN too, saying CNY is offensive, but bao is so out of touch with her own culture that she didn't know the difference. Me neither, but i'm aussie.

but almost all the people harassing bao were native Vietnamese not americans, jesus can you people not point he finger at us for every negative thing in the world for 5 seconds
Well, let me see... All this dates back to when Bao said "Happy Chinese New Year". For a while, she gained a lot of Vietnamese fan attention because she revealed that she is half-Vietnamese. And Vietnamese are like that, anywhere on or off the internet, if we encounter another Vietnamese (well, outside of Vietnam), that day gonna be a good day, like meeting a brother or sister after a long time. The thing is, stuff will turn sideways when China is mentioned (You know the history between China and Vietnam), and they take pride in culture. Calling Lunar New Year Chinese New Year after you show a tiny bit of Vietnamese, will upset some weird, pridefull people, plus the anti is always on the lookout to strike, causing a lot of problems and misunderstanding. Lucky tho, most of the new generations of Vietnamese or anyone with internet access, who have experienced the internet culture know what they are doing and will protect what is right with common sense, as you can see from the number of people defending Bao.
That's the thing, most Americans DON'T know the history between China and Vietnam. It's not something taught in (most?) high school history classes when discussing the Vietnam War. I've surprised many a friend and family member by bringing up what happened as soon as the US pulled out, when discussing why Vietnam seems like one of the most chill communist countries around (because as soon as they unified, they had to deal with the Khmer Rouge and China).

I think it's obvious at this point that trying to make a big stink about someone's eyhnicity, regardless of if you're trying to defend/attack said person is a horribly ineffective way to earn internet brownie points. Especially when the option of treating every person you sit next to like a damn human being is always available.

Once in a while, I hear Bao speaking in Vietnamese, and it warms my heart and sounds adorable (even though most of the time it's swearing, but it's still cute). However, I have never thought about listening to Bao sing, and I was really looking forward to it, but unfortunately, someone caused trouble for Bao again. Until now, Vietnam has never had a Vtuber as popular as Bao, and on top of that, Bao has connections with many other big VTubers too, which makes me feel the same way as when Sofm from Suning back in 2020 reached the finals of League of Legends. And first time a Vietnamese person has made it to the finals of the biggest Esports tournament in the world .I hope Bao doesn't feel discouraged and hope she do the cover.
As another Vietnamese, Bao doesn't owe them shit. I can barely tell the difference between CNY and LNY and for the longest tike I thought they were the same thing. The only connection I have to Vietnam is that my parents were born there. I wasn't.

To a certain point I can kind of understand where detractors _may_ be coming from, because we see it all the time where "latinos" in the US who are Hispanic by heritage only, and usually don't speak a lick of authentic Spanish (maybe some garbled Spanglish at best), try to wear their "latinidad" like a cheap decoration they can put on or take off any time it's convenient to them. Just like Natasha Kline marketing her show Primos as "Latin representation" but basing it solely on her own gringo-washed upbringing in an LA suburb. Just kind of a slap in the face to real latinos. However, the two scenarios diverge in that Bao seems like a genuinely sweet person who just wanted to participate in her culture of heritage and meant no harm whatsoever, whereas Kline is just another dime-a-dozen narcissist in the entertainment industry who presumes that everybody is just dying to see her "lived experiences" put to animation.
Primos was the first thing that came to my mind as well. That and the recent Korean Lois Lane situation. I guess some people are just too tired of certain Americans being "proud" of their heritage (without actually giving enough shit to learn anything about said heritage) to the point they start actively harassing Americans who give off that vibe. This time, however, it was a hard miss, since Bao didn't even try to "profit" from her heritage or even get some brownie points, but instead just wanted to have some fun and try to know the Vietnamese culture better.
And then there's people like me who get shunned for not wanting to participate in my heritage's culture that I didn't even grow up in nor do I even speak the language. Ain't no winning on either side smh
@@evilmar2363 completely distancing yourself from your own heritage is extremely lame, IMHO. Every nation has something to be proud of. Better try to learn it and face some criticisms from a couple of no-life weirdos, than to simply become a part of the boring gray mass.

Ah, I heard about the harassment thing earlier today, so perhaps I can shed some light on it. Apparently, back around February, Bao made a tweet about having a happy "Chinese New Year" which is what the lunar new year is most commonly referred to in America. Of course, it is not how it is referred in Vietnam. This caused a large amount for her Vietnamese "fans" (ie they were only her fans because of her Vietnamese heritage) to start accusing her as being some sort of Chinese apologist or something.

Bad apples exist literally everywhereand the vtubing fanbase is no exception. Better to just accept it than look the way way and try to pretend it isn't your crowd this time
I'm Vietnamese and here's more to our perspective on the situation based on what I know and read. It started from Bao saying Happy Chinese New Year, which made Vietnamese fans a little uncomfortable. If you don't already know, we had a long history with China (~1000 years of war) and they always want to turn VN into their territory, I remember even some textbooks for kids used show that VN is their land, so we are a bit sensitive on this issue. The criticism might have been a bit too harsh, but it escalated I think partly because of Bao's ignorance on it. She banned and blocked the ones who criticised her and completely evaded the problem. It took her 6 months to finally apologize to the VN fans. She also decided she was gonna do a Vietnamese song cover, probably to get the fans back, but that odd phrasing on her tweet "If this cover doesn't pop off", like if it doesn't go viral, she'll give up? Idk it's just weird wording there. Bao has a wide fanbase over many Asian countries (besides China) which celebrate Lunar New Year, so she needs to take note into that. Clearly she had made an oopsie, and it's understandable because she was just not aware, but it's mainly the lack of transparency about the issue that made the fans go wild. Like maybe she could have made a small video addressing the problem, it's literally just a small phrase. But she banned and blocked people, rant on twitter, and recently just an apology and cover after many months? To many frustrated fans I've heard, looking at that perspective just feels disrespectful, being ignored for months and an apology + cover will fix it all? Still, both sides have their wrongs here. Many VN fans like Bao because there is just not a lot of successful Vietnamese Vtubers out there, and we're somewhat proud to see one like her. So seeing our "idol" saying things like this is quite serious, even if it's just a small phrase. FYI, Vietnam banned the new movie Barbie just because a tiny part has a hand-drawn map with the supposedly "nine-dashed line" on it. Can someone fill me up about this situation? There should be something from VTuber Bao that trigger the harassment, shouldn't it? I am a Vietnamese, born and raised in Vietnam, and a lot of people said that I looked more like a Japanese. During my 2-year studying abroad in Japan, I always introduced myself as a student from a country in Asia, is learning Viernamese and have some interest in Vietnam culture (yes, with the teachers' help I never disclosed my country to any one except the teachers). In most of the class I joined there were a few Vietnamese students, and they never figured out my identity. On several occasion we did Vietnamese Talks events, karaoke, which only used Vietnamese, but no one ever give a doubt. I often used broken Vietnamese include broken vocab, grammar and pronunciation (on purpose), I talked a lot about Vietnam culture which most of them are incorrect. Yet no one ever mocked me for that, instead they corrected me on my mistakes. Until the last semester I accidentally let a (Vietnamese) classmate saw my resident card, and they found out that I actually am a Vietnamese. Their attitude flipped completely, they start mocking me, called me an eccentric, a liar, a "traitor" and started isolating me, and even tried to get other international students doing the same. TL;DR: No one know that I am a Vietnamese, and they never mocked me for my broken Vietnamese or lack of knowledge about culture. However they started mocking me when the found out my true identity. So it is possible that a similar situation happened to VTuber Bao that lead to people harassing her.
From reading other comments, apparently it dates back to February when she wrote a tweet saying “happy Chinese New Year “ instead of referring to it as Lunar new year and got hate, then with this too getting more hate from the weird and terminally online
Damn as a Vietnamese I havent seen anyone making a fuss about this yet here in Vietnam but seeing this there sure are some crazy people out there and I hope that Bao can recover from his

I wasn't.
I understand her pain, when I tried singing in my native tongue (Welsh) I had people actually telling me I was a sad nerd for speaking elvish from LOTR.
Going to say that I am surprised that with all the shit Bao has said (like wanting Blaidd to breed her and give her puppies) that it is **THIS** that gets her cancelled.
Im just saying, gatekeeping songs based on language is just so counterproductive as a whole.

Just saw her in the Nerrissa debut chat. I hope she's ok. She doesn't deserve this negativity.
I noticed that as well. Its fascinating how it only happened with her.
Stuff like this makes me glad to be off twitter or at least limit my use. I was completely off the platform for like 7 months but I did go back cause a lot of people I know post funny stuff on there and I like to stay in touch. But the second I veer off into some randoms tweet, I immediately notice this feeling of stupidity welling up inside me. Like I genuinely think the stupidity of some people on twitter is actually infectious. People were complaining about twitter limiting usage but I see it as a good thing cause I think people really should not even be allowed to be on twitter for that long
As a vietnamese, i said this behaviors is only acceptable in their friend group, if those harrasment get leak anywhere, the name of the person who harrass other will go on facebook(which have a lots of vietnamese user) and they'll get the same treatment as the victim, the only downside is that probaly the worst the punishment can get
I don't understand why people deal with this shit. Just block, ban, and restate your stance/thoughts/intents etc. People that want to be mad are always going to be mad no matter what you do.
Bao being Vietnamese made “the seas are speaking” pop into my head.
Bilingual Viet here, I studied Vietnamese until 4th grade in VN and moved to the U.S in 2017, I can’t even nailed down the language most of the time and I’m somewhat of a native speaker, this language is hard as hell so I understand where Bao is coming from.
For my knowledge, i see that high numbers(not all) of the Vietnamese that harassing her or come from outside of the country especially those the Vietnamese call as “viet cong” and those who are anti-Vietnam that are always try to trample upon the VietNam cultures, products and will try to provoke controversy in social media.
I feel sad for what happened to Bao have to experience and can only wish that she can be strong and overcome all this pointless situations
As someone who have a Chinese root and who family who have lived for several generations in Vietnam, having the war essentially rolled through their neighborhood, and that I was born and raised in Vietnam for the first 10+ years of my life before moving to the States... To us, dual languages wasn't a choice, and that's before knowing a word of English, btw. And guess what, I haven't mastered any of them.
So I'm just gonna say this to the anti: That's cringe.
There are a lot of young Vietnamese (mostly from the North) see the Vietnamese that grew up in the US such as Bao is the member or follower of the "Republic of Vietnam" (the old government set up by the US during the War). So they will harass these Vietnamese that live abroad thinking them as some sort of "patriotic soldier". And Bao also triggered them by tweet "Happy CN New Year" instead of "Lunar New Year"

Plot twist: Bao the Whale is a Futanari. Her enemies and haters are all literally screwed.

If that's the case, invite Puss'n boots instead.
This is a good idea.
This is why I have always avoided social media. I follow few outside UA-cam and post seldom. Most of it is not worth the time and irritation.
Aw poor bao. Listen singing is hard stop times especially in a language your not used to singing in so I feel for her.
Poor bao😢
As a former Genshin player, there's nothing wrong with offending other Genshin players. They are perpetually offended by simply existing. There is absolutely nothing you can do that would offend them even more.

I'm a vietnamese and i must say that some people in my country. They can't even take a joke or have an open minded. They even harass you or look down on you when they think you're cringe with that small mindset. On social media or what ever game i play. Vrchat, facebook , discord. I always hang out with foreigners instead of them man. Sadly. ( There are still good vietnamese but it's just hard to find. The toxic kind of person is a lot ).
Sorry to y'all man. And sorry to Bao ~
Bao is cool haters are just hating tbh

AAAAHHGH
I like that Bao's open about how she struggles learning about her culture. This was not really a wakeup call, just an attack that affected her supporters.
No one is innocent in this regard regardless of race. It doesn't have to be about mentioning a country on stream.
It doesn't have to be about mentioning/playing a game USING the license from a trans hater.
It doesn't HAVE TO BE about spreading misinformation or sending hate brigades about certain things ingrained in the anime community or any community!
Just... don't be a big ICEhole. It takes several muscles to frown than to smile.
I may be jaded but I'd rather draw, build model kits, or play videogames to pass the time while I'm on this planet.
This is f*cking sad… someone who would so adamantly try to speak a language that they’re trying to learn and speak getting harassed is absolutely disgusting… I wish the worst on those harassing Bao and the people who clip and support her
If or when she releases the single, I'll definitely listen to it.
I hear English, Japanese, and Spanish songs day in and day out, but barely any Korean, and next to no Vietnamese. I think the only Vietnamese song I know off the top of my head is 2 Phut Hon, and that's only because of friggin' memes.
She's not going to make the flood go away. Best to just jump on the boat and sail it into the moon.
As a native Vietnamese speaker i can be sure that our community love Bao and will never bully her
The only ones who do are either Twitard, racist America, or yellow flag with 3 stripe ppl.
Are we really gatekeeping languages and heritages now? Bao is so sweet, she doesn't deserve any of the hate.
Baos already been through way too much this year. From the what like 34k scam to being forgotten about at a con.
Oh yeah, viet social media is like top tier of toxicity. Hope she gets through this safely.
Good on Bao for standing up for herself. I know she's said before that she can kinda timid, but its good to see she's able to call out her harassers when she did nothing wrong.
Vietnamese here.
I had read about Bao situation when it happened.
So basically, she retweeted her chinese fan(i think is chinese because he/she name was in chinese) with "happy chinese new year" and people in VN gone crazy. It mainly because they expect alot from Bao. After that she have to edit her tweet to "happy lunar new year" then it got delete or something.
I personaly didnt follow Bao but i dislike harrashment.
Somebody send Sidon’s VA to her house, that will brighten her day immensely.
My family is Chinese and I can speak a little Cantonese, but I wouldn't be bothered to learn how to read it.
Also Viet culture are like French culture, where if they get angry, they really will show it. Even mindlessly if it came to being emotionally deranged.
Ahh i see, so is the tweet still up?
@@akira8393 I think she deleted it, but that is never enough.
So it was a genuine misunderstanding and Twitter freaks decided to just accuse and harass??

There's post on r/VirtualTubers or something like that today iirc about bao situation that explains a lot more
props to her doing the cover
I can't even imagine bao doing anything to hurt anyone else on purpose, she seems like the nicest girl ever.

Its ridiculous how some idiots stress people out just because they could.

Can we just leave the vtubers alone we lost coco and Pikamee
Damn Twitter users... At least now we got Kson and Henya who can't "graduate" (lose their models when they leave) again since they're in VShojo.
I'm a pure Vietnamese born and raised in Vietnam but grew up watching so much Western stuff that I occasionally forget my own language and culture, I got shit on frequently by my own people for that. But I never got mad at them because despite all that I still love my country and people. Vietnamese people sometimes get very "passionate" when it comes to their country but just keep in mind most of this is not out of malice, it's simply just aggressive patriotism. In Bao's case, she's nearly foreign to Vietnam so it's not a big deal, as long as you respect the people and culture, Vietnam will always be glad to welcome you❤
To give more in-sight perspective to this. This all started since the lunar new year, and there's a part of facebook user that also use Twitter got mad because Bao and Shotou used "china" new year instead of "lunar" new year. It is sad that the stupidity spread everywhere
Shout out of the homie playing Ravenfield in the gameplay
honestly, I like when she speak Vietnamese because her Southern accent is really funny, but if this is the kind of treatment she get for speaking it, I'd rather she never knew how to speak it

Although, why do I have a small suspicion that amongst those 'Vietnamese' Bao harassers and anti-fans, there are those who pretend to be one of us? Because to us, having foreigners learning how to speak Vietnamese is a very welcoming pleasure.
But what if there isn't
@@dream6562 I won't say there's no toxicity in our community because it would be a f-king lie. But the situation just sounds a bit odd and that's just my speculation.
And if they're all Vietnamese... as one myself, I have to apologize for their behaviors.
@@kurogems8607 yeah that sounds kind of conspiratorial lol. Do you not remember not remember what happened to Kiryu Coco and Rushia. Bad apples exist literally everywhereand the vtubing fanbase is no exception. Better to just accept it than look the way way and try to pretend it isn't your crowd this time
you do know that our community is stupidly toxic right? 💀
I just hope that Bao somehow figures something out to peacefully resolve the issue, I don't watch her streams but am a casual enjoyer of her clips and videos, and I don't wanna see her in situations like this.
she blocked toxic people for being toxic , chinese new year is somthing thats acepted and pops up in the west due to the amount of chinese imigrants the west is where most people fleeing alot of the regimes go to being pissy over somthing like that isnt deserving of an apolagy
and it lucky she just americanised if was any kther western country such as europe its even more acepted like uk has alot of taiwanese and hing king decended people due to britains relationship with the china on a colonial level and brigosh schools celebrate chinese new year as a sort culture festival but that isnt exclusive to chinese stuff in uk their alot of culture sharing like indian festivals colleges will somtimes have people come in and hold events and stuff the west is culturaly hybridised due to ots history
when dealing with the west you are as much responcible for understanding that as they are understanding their audiance their not obligated to pander

Man every online drama is on Twitter. Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, they always manage to surprise everyone!
Aye they're bullying the pillow princess? Nah we fitin
Damn as a Vietnamese I havent seen anyone making a fuss about this yet here in Vietnam but seeing this there sure are some crazy people out there and I hope that Bao can recover from his
As a Vietnamese and a bilingual. I often forget my own native tongue vocabulary. There are times when i don't remember what words to say, even though i know that words in English. All these people who are criticised her for not being able to speak Vietnamese, doesn't seem to be Vietnamese at all.
