Ralph Goldheim from Novation demonstrates the sound and capabilities of the Novation Bass Station II monophonic analog synthesizer. Enjoy the demo, then learn more about the Bass Station 2 at the link above!
run it through a bass amp, as a bass station should, and you can rattle the earth, the house, and the neighbor's house. deep heavy, grinding, or smooth bass sounds can be achieved easily. I use many different sounds in my band and it comes through well through mains at clubs too. very nice buy, as long as you know how to use a synth. but it's kind of fun to get stuck somewhere between sounds and have to dig yourself out of oscillations you didnt intend. happy bassing!
tested this today in my local music store i have to sat that it's alot of fun to play with and it sounds really phat compared to other analogue synths i tried.
Same! Just came in the mail today and I am getting it after work.
i am very impressed, thank you for sharing.
I bought the original Bass Station when it came out in 1993. I'm trying to remember what I did with it. I think I gave it to my brother around 2000, who also played keyboards. I wonder if he still has it. It complemented my Korg X3, which I remember selling.
Is the first bass sound one of the factory presets or an initial sound that you have tweaked to get like that? Lovely sound !
Thank you for this demo!
One question: does this have an active panel mode where it reverts to all of the settings currently on the knobs?
This is a intro demo only obviously. Check with the SW staff about more in depth info because several of the guys actually own a BSII themselves. Ask for Christopher as he is a real synth geek and knows it in depth. Enjoy!
Ralph Goldheim, your name is already explaining that you are a legend! Question: can you find updates for the novation on internet like new packs of sounds and if so, can these be added to the synth? Thanks!
Yes, novation has plenty of free patches they provide to users, and you can find many patches for free online from other people that have the synth too
It sounds just as steppy as my old one. This I feel is their 'fly in the ointment'. Now that aside, with careful programming, they do make some sweet sounds, and the keyboard feels nice.
Daniel Fisher of Sweetwater does great synth demos.
With the Bass Station in mind, It might be an idea to be able to have separate pedals, without controls to keep the price down, to play this :)
I tried one today and it sounded veryyyy nice. We got one at a synth meet and everyone I spoke liked the try of this synth. Sounds like i'm about to score one :-S
it feels like watching ross geller demo his synth
+jorel borromeo electrofyiing.... infinite time time time time
im buying this!!!!
Because its awesome!!
got mine today, cant wait to get home :D
Fre Akus you home yet?
@@reganridesMTB dont think so
@@pollotenders5329 He's still driving. It's a long way!
Awesome!
Oh I'm not saying that the instrument is bad because of it, I was just a bit shocked. Thought they'd be using a higher resolution on their parameters, does you know if it receives 14-bit midi CC?
I was 1 of the first musicians that bought and used the bass station rack 1. People laughed at me as it looked a toy. I used it working at the studio working with Dr Dre's record label back in the 90's
thx for the great demo... That is a winner from Novation!
Well I could understand them having lower res back in the earlier 90s, when my old Bass station was made, but if it's the same now, that would be unacceptable considering processing power now, and them knowing that bass sweeps are popular.
I'm sure it can be controlled via midi, but not sure how smooth the res will be.
This guy's in love.
Hello, i'm trying to do some patch assigments to my BSII from my hardware sequencer. Does the BSII accept transmission of CC/PG/Program Change messages? If so, how can we find out the CC values for the different BSII patches, so that we can enter them into the sequencer (for assignment etc.)? Thanks.
@Arjun Bhaduri check out page 21 of the user manual (available on Novation's website), it has the full MIDI parameters list - thanks for watching!
Yeah thanks I figured out what to do!
Interesting synth
the step-sequencer alone is worth the buy.
Je parel français tré mal, pardon.
Minibrute a un son completement analogique?
C'est meilleur?
Merci.
This new video just came out on it from Novation. Nice.
Go to Novation TV and check it out - You tube won't let me post the link. sorry.
"the 24db guy"
nothing against sweetwater, they are the only company i purchase new synths/gear from, this being one of them but if you really want a proper demo check on sonic labs demo from Nick Bookman who happens to be one of the devs. dont get me wrong this is still a decent demo, just no where near nicks. this synth is pretty damn nice, if it had cv it would be one of the greatest things to come out in years(based on its price)
Anyone know if this can be used to trigger midi in a DAW like Pro Tools???
Hi, thanks for your interest! Yes, the Bass Station II can be used as a MIDI controller with Pro Tools or any other DAW that supports MIDI. The keys, as well as almost all the other controls, will send MIDI data over USB to your computer. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any further questions!

Where did you get that infomation? I'm not giving it the barry like "Bollocks he did" or what ever! I just wanna know all I can about how those top end productions were made init brah!
damn that pwm was steppy as hell
Heard one heard em all!
Theres a ton of videos out there that go more in depth!
can i get this as a vst, so just as software ?
Yes. Just google it :P
thx, i will search on google
complete novice question. - does anyone make something like this that actually sounds like a bass guitar?
The acid filter......oh we know buddy. 3am and still going.
What size are the keys?
Hey there! That Bass Station II is going to come with full-size keys on it, which are generally 427.5mm in width. This size is common amongst most full-size 88-key keyboards, so it's going to give you plenty of room on each key, even with it being a 25-key synthesizer.
Thanks for your interest! Feel free to reach out with any other questions that you might have.

What genius thought of having the filter cut off, on the far right?
+LFOVCF Gestures left, then reaches right. Lol
+Johnny synth Yes he did, I rest my case!
I can't lie, I missed that, well spotted!
LFOVCF would u rather it 6ft away from u or under the keyboard
No, but I'd rather a sensible reply, instead of a sarcastic pile of nonsense.
LFOVCF or even on ur head
Just to be clear: Pure Analog = Pure Analog Signal Path
Is it polyphonic?
Hello! Nope, the Bass Station II is a monophonic synth.
If you'd like to go into more detail, please call my number below. Thanks for your interest!

This guy could be the dad of Morlokk Dilemma!
Where's Daniel!? ;)
BS2 has more filer modes: 7 in total. Mopho has more modulation possibilities... I rather prefer more filter flavors :)
Watch SonicState demo.
Wish it was battery powered. I'll hold on to my x-station and microkorg.
test after touch
Exactly. How the hell can anyone actually finish making a record if you spend 4-5 hours on a single keyboard patch?????
To my ears this synth is pretty underwhelming. Some of the patches towards the end sounded ok, but most sounded pretty generic in this vid. The minibrute sounds a lot better.
VirtualMark
The minibrute sounds harsh and limited to my ears. This has a warm rounded sound very like the Roland Juno 60.
Easily done.
if you spend 4-5 hours on one, single patch...
ループミュージックですよ。
5:36 "bitch please"
7:35 4-5 hours on the perfect sound???? LOL
Cheesy 80s thriller action movie effects.
digitally control oscillator,
numerical preset storage,
digital effect,
numeric envelop,
numeric arpegiator,
numeric USB port,
and
they say "100% pure analog??"
😶
"numerical preset storage" - uuh, do you want like a rotary dial for presets? or punch cards?
"numeric USB port" - because there are great analog alternatives for this, right?
"digitally control oscillator" - because it sure is fun to wait for synths to heat up or tune them every time you play?
Sound on Sound review is on point here: "Like the original, its oscillators are DCOs rather than VCOs and anyone who takes this information as justification to flounce away like a wounded teenager could be missing out."
Michael Jackson spent 3 weeks on bass for "Billie Jean".

Right perfection doesnt come easy.

Instead of exploring the range of sound design possibilities or showing any character the synth might have, they stuck to making a mayonnaise sandwich on wonder bread. And serious who are they wanting to sell these to? Guys in their 60s-70s trying to make yacht rock? Hey dum-dum I know what a filter is, can you make it sound interesting though?
sorry, but that is rubbish, analogue chips with integrated circuits have been around since the late 70ies/ early 80ies. That was the time when polysynths became portable without the danger of getting hernia or a spinal disc herniation. Polysynths with discrete components can reach a weight in excess of 190 pounds, like the notorious yamaha CS 80.
THIS is a synth I was waiting for! Minibrute sounds interesting but not very attractive to my ears, Sub Phatty is overpriced, MS-20 mini is too weird and Mopho has less sound creation possibilities. BS2 wins. BS2 & Volca Beats and I don't need Roland anymore :)
MaxZorin8
The bassstion is awesome. And this is coming from a DX7 fanatic. I know greatness when i hear it. And this is hands down for sub $1000 the sweetest and most intelligently put together synth Ive heard.
as a sound designer i can say it isnt funny. a ridiculous amount of time can go into creating some patches.
Wanted to hear bass, go back to the gas station
Looks like a one trick pony.
That's because it's a bass synth
No one trick pony. In the right hands this little gem can stand against any mono synth in history. It has a full fat sound and gorgeous simple layout.
The Bass Station II has a good sound, but every patch kind of sounds the same. Nothing special about the controls or the design of the synth: it's the same bog-standard stuff you get from any generic keyboard. It's like an MS-20, but with patch saving, an extremely basic arpeggiator, and of course it doesn't have the modular cable feature of the MS-20 which sets that synth apart from others. Good demo from Sweetwater though: nice and too the point without the useless chitchat about nothing you get from other demo videos "Well today I got my xyz, and I unwrapped it, and I put the boxes in the trash but first I had to rip them up so they fit in the trash can" etc. etc. for 5 minutes before you get any information.
The guy has no idea what is he doing
