Novation Bass Station II Review - Daniel Fisher
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 лип 2024
- Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater’s synth guru, gives an in-depth walk-through of Novation’s Bass Station II Analog Synthesizer. He also demonstrates the potential when connecting the synth to a TC Electronic Flashback Digital Delay, as well as Singular Sound’s BeatBuddy Drum Pedal. The drum pedal is sending MIDI Clock via its optional MIDI Sync Cable to the Bass Station II which synchronizes its Arpeggiator, Sequencer, and LFOs with the drums.

Very helpful demo to get a good impression of what sonically is to expect inside the Bass Station 2. Impressive - Thanks!
some say he's still playing - neglecting food and sleep, the bass station long unplugged from its original power source but it keeps going
Yolk Rider & Mold Hider ha ha! A mix of this guy and Nick from Sonic state would be a good balance.
@@lardosian I want to see those two in the same room together. I bet they hang out on occasion at NAMM
Fun fact: The firmware update this week has now changed this synth from monophonic to paraphonic.
I love that they made the filter frequency knob huge. I had the original rack one and wore all the printing off around it lol
I just bought one, and it's capable of fantastic patches, and basses so
powerful, I could feel the woofer on my monitors blow a gale my
direction.
Today I played on just about every synth that's available,
inc matrixibrute, sub 37, Phatty, Korgs etc, and the BS2 has stood
shoulder to shoulder, and the key action is one of the best.
Positive comments like this are exactly what I am looking for here. Thanks!
LFOVCF . Good to hear it wasnt spoiled by cheap feeling keys. Its an important component in my opinion. Nothing worse than an expensive car with the worse cheapest tyres.
Nerver thought noise (7:45) could be that beautiful! Thank Daniel for showing what this is capable of even with small moves.
for the money, the BSII is awesome. I much rather prefer DCO's, because with my Moog's, there were always 30-40 minute start ups times so that the oscillators would get in tune and wouldn't drift. i like to just turn a unit on, get my idea out and sequenced and the BSII allows that. Also it's way smaller than the Sub37 & Little Phatty, both of which I prefer over the smaller Sub Phatty. The Moog filter is the best I've heard, but for me personally, the cons of the Moogs have me choosing the BSII over them. Spending $600+ for slightly "better"/different synth isn't enough for me to justify buying & keeping a Moog. I liked my LP, but the $$$ I've saved can go towards other gear. There are pros/cons with each piece of gear. The BSII isn't an entry level synth either as I've heard others call it in videos....it's just a damn good 2 OSC Analog synth that sounds amazing to my ears and is quick & enjoyable to work with.
Wonderful demonstration!
Now that is what I call a review ................ 10/10 ............... excellent !
This man is a genius! Love seeing him talk about and demo synths. I learn so much. Thanks!
Got one on the way. Never played synth before, but I think it's gonna be fun. :)
Great to see Daniel again!! Next u need to demo the korg odessy!!
Nice. Send one my way. You guys have my CC on tab.
Its Moog enough for me, got one on the way.
With the upper octaves, you could make some sick solos...
Thanks John Goodman!
This synth has the best feature to price ratio that I’ve ever seen, been buying synths since the 80’s
Microfreak is also insane for its price
nice demo
Great stuff...
Awesome demo of BS2 capabilities. I already have one, and you're right - its brilliant, but you might have just 'sold' me a BeatBuddy to go with it!
The BS II will be a classic one day
It’s probably safe to say it is now
It totally is now yup
Reminds me of the MOS 6581 in the C64. A lot.
I am getting one,
Daniel Fisher sounds a little bit like the Dude from Big Lebowski/Jeff Bridges lol. Awesome demo for an awesome synth!
I want this fkn synth mate! I'm grinning just listening to u play around..fair dinkum!
I use the vst and I am happy to get classic bass sounds but use a moog though too
great review Daniel! don't have a drum machine yet, so before that, is it possible to sync it with my DAW (using Logic proX) to get used to it before hardware additions?
Hi Korhan. The LFOs, Seq, and Arp can lock to an external MIDI Clock. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
great synth for the money lol...I'm on your side man...keen to get one soon..
Got this for my bithrday!!!!!
Help me to understand this. The Bass Station 2 is over $1000 less than the Sub 37, and seems to have most of the same features. The sequencer isn't as nice, and to my ears the oscillators don't sound as nice as the Moog, and the filter is it's own thing obviously. But.. is that really all that's missing? The knobs are multi-function with the switches for VCO 1 and 2, the ADSR has the switch too.. so a few less knobs, but it seems to be all there, just like the Sub 37. Such a huge price difference.
Got both of them. Let me tell about the MOOG: Quality oscillators and filters alone is just much much better. Real step sequencer. Paraphonic polyphony. 37 semi-weighted keys. Finally cool name on the back. Don't get me wrong, I love my Novation as well, its just not the same. Apple and oranges.
The Moog is in a cast aluminum casing with real wood sides. Notation is in plastic casing and cheap knob caps. Mind you I have both Novation BS2 and SubSequent 37. And although BS2 has cut these corners they had done so purposefully so that it could be very affordable. I love it ! I think it sounds like the SUB Phatty. However my favorite feature that Moog and every other synth manufacturer should take up on is the simple little arrow indicator for value up or down for the preset setting. Fantastic idea. Inexpensive and indispensable tool. There is always a struggle that just gets left by the wayside to find a way to show preset setting on an analogue synth. This very small simple feature has made my experience with BS2 and absolute joy! So thank you Novation.
It’s 399$ now
@@Furriee I had a sub 37 and the little screen failed...moog charged me £32 to replace, i sold the sub 37...would never buy another moog because of this...btw the sub 37 was 18months old.
Would be great if they would offer a rack version again. Desk space is limited.
Bs2 or korg minilouge?
I cant decide between this and monologue
"Wanted, someone to play with synth for half an hour" - Novation job posting
haha
Hi sweetwater, is this going to be a good synth for church worship especially in a stage worship setting? Cause im debating between this and behringer poly d 37 analog
I honestly mostly need a synth for bass lines and occasional leads, do you guys recommend this or the minibrute?
This has memory..I would go with one of these
Great review. Less talking=more sound
Anyone got any decent Synthex laser harp patches out of this beast?, due mine from eBayer in a couple of days .... 😎🎹
Can it be used to approximate/sample a bass fiddle or bass guitar in ROOTS music, WITHOUT the "outer space" effects, like the old keyboard basses of yore?
Hi Prof. Harp. It's really easy to not have outer space effects by simply not connecting any effects. As for simulating bass fiddle or bass guitar... you can probably synthesize something that will pass when it's mixed with other instruments, but for it to sound realistic in an isolated situation, it'd probably be better to go with a sample-based keyboard. Thanks for watching!
Atari has a job for you!
so what if i get tr 8 and this synth????
what do you think guys??
thank you :)
We think you would be happy! Thanks for watching!
@@sweetwater cheers for the wholesome answer!
What would I need to be able to play this? Do you just a speaker or a computer?
Hi Isaiah, a speaker with an amp, or a self-powered speaker, or a pair of headphones would do nicely. Thanks for watching!
Is it possible to get some clean sub-bass sounds out of it like for the use in old school hip-hop beats?
I'm interested in that, did you find out?
@@swishyfish325 Unfortunately not.
@@kryzs_kornhell any alternatives for old school hip hop beats under $1k
@@kryzs_kornhell I wouldn't say now, it can produce clean "boom" fairly good and relatively easy. I think it could be considered
Can this make the synth sounds like from “everybody loves the sunshine”??
Hi Joe. They key to recreating that patch is to set the Filter to HP (High Pass) in order to get that very thin sound. Add Resonance to taste. -_Daniel_
@@sweetwater what kind of system do you need to project it? A bass amp? A pa?
This can play with Ableton correct?
Hi Willow Tree, the Novation Bass Station II has both standard MIDI In and Out jacks, as well as MIDI via USB. Thanks for watching!
Sweetwater, I know you have a review on the Microbrute, would you recommend this synth or the Microbrute?
For someone getting into synthesis and with a budget

Can you use this on any Daw?
Angel EnriqueZ you can record it and connect via midi
That thing sounds like every atari game I ever had. Like tank an qbert for sure.lmao... many more too..
Love the comment, made me smile out loud!
Would be interested to know what kind of speakers you used in the video. Thank you!
Hi Thomas, it was a direct connection from the Bass Station, through a TC Electronics Flashback Delay, and then into the Audio Inputs of the video camera. I did use a Roland KC-110 Stereo Keyboard Amp to monitor my playing, but that was not part of the audio chain that you're hearing. Thanks for watching!
Hey, guys, just give me a hand: this or ms-20 mini?
this
Akimov Lukas I'd say this synth because the sound is fantastic and the keys are somewhat full size whereas the MS 20 has three octaves of mini keys that as a primary piano player, I hate. Novation have also done a great job of the factory sounds where complimentary sounds are next to each other so in performance real easy to find. The sound of this synth is also really good and sweeps are creamy smooth. Also there is a lot of synthesis capability in this synth by pressing the button and the key for what you want. You can also save your patches because this is a digitally controlled analogue synth whereas the MS 20 needs to be re-programmed every time. Don't get me wrong, I love the distinctive filter on the MS 20 but as a 40 year old synth it does have ease-of-programming problems now superseded by more up-to-date technology.
some of those sounds make me go "wawawawawawawbobobobbobkakakak"
Is this good for a beginner
It's a great beginner's synth, but you have to know what you're looking for. This will do a single, analog voice, great for basses, leads, sequenced parts etc. with hands-on control. Is that what you're looking for?
Can someone help me and tell me if a talkbox works with this
Hi Incognito Life, a talk box gets its audio signal from the electrical output of a guitar, keys, or other sources. So the Novation Bass Station II will work just fine with a talkbox. It will also do well with a vocoder. Thanks for watching!
SweetwaterSound thank you
hahaha this is exactly what i just spent a half hour doing in guitar center today on this thing... at the end, i was like hmm... this is why i play guitar...
What's the brand and model of that midi cable?
Hi badbadsheep, I'm not sure of the length, but it's either a Hosa MID-303BK, Hosa MID-305BK, Hosa MID-310BK, or Hosa MIDI20 (3', 5', 10', 20' respectively). Thanks for watching!
Prefer reviews that show how the synth works organically. .no added pedals etc.
the acid part sounds very liquid like a drink
test after touch
You can NOT "review" a product if you are engaged in SELLING that product for profit.
It might be a great synth but you made it sound terrible.
Still King!!!
I wish I could get paid to play it!!! But the manual doesn’t include them instructions.
