Not everyone is going to be on the hunt to kill each other, people need other people to survive - one can sleep while one watches out, for example - pretty hard to do alone.

      Standard uniform for post apocalypse.
The EMP/aliens knock out out the grid, so fans don't work, resulting in particles of sand building up into small heaps, which the wind might possibly blow into their faces, so they kit themselves out accordingly to prepare for it.
Some practice a squinting look to indicate they've handled some pretty fierce sunshine, too, while sporting the goggles at a jaunty angle on their heads in what they imagine to be a devil-may-care fashion.

Question. If this film takes place just days after what ever happen. And Gordon hasn't seen a soul. Why is drinking out of the sewer and eating canned tuna. He walked pass a bunch of houses. Think I would I knocked on a door or two to see if anyone was there. If no answer, go in get some food and water and hit the trail ad fast as possible. In a situation like he is in. People leave all kinds of stuff behind. House's, garages and warehouses are were you want to look first. Yes there is a chance you mite run into people. But they will be doing the same as you. And if you have a firearm you mite have the upper hand.

Thank you for this vid. I enjoyed it and took some tips to heart. Some things I would do differently which I suspect you would too but perhaps for practical cinematic/time/scripting reasons couldn't do:
    1) Travel during the night in the city or evening/early morning.
    2) Would spend more time tending for cover to cover travel/traversing rather than strolling out in the open... it would take longer but you'd be safer.
    3) I would have my sidearm within easy reach all the time rather than having to take my pack off to access it.
    4) Would pack a pair of small field-glasses to gather better intel. and more effective situational awareness forward.
    5) Never leave my gear/pack unattended.
    6) Wouldn't shoot an individual without cause. The character in the film was obviously a hostile entity. I'd observe/follow very discretely and wait to see if he had comrades thereby avoiding a situation where I couldn't extract myself and gather info that might help me tactically - intel is a great equalizer!
Also, positive self-talk is really important!!! Emotionality/fear will ultimately kill you, put you in a situation that is hard to get out of, or, will stop you from thinking viable contingencies. I liked the self-dialogue presented here and should be intentional and purposeful when/if this scenario happens.
All in all a really good synopsis on self-extraction. Would have liked to have seen the character injured in some way so I could see the first aid kit and the necessities/procedures for different types of injuries as odds of survival go drastically down with injury/sickness. My go-kit has a bit more food than you seemed to have, but that's OK as much can be scavenged and in the bush, foraged if you know your regional ecosystem. Good job and thanks again for pointing folks brains in the right direction including mine!

Pepper Action - Your short film was quite interesting.
It certainly gave food for thought for a "what if" event. It reminded me of a re-run first episode of the original Twilight Zone,
    "Where is everybody".
    It gave hours of
    "what would you do" conversations.
Many find it easy to say "I'd do this or that" but should an unexpected event create an unthinkable catastrophe, clear thinking would go out the window.
We are presently facing a no cure deadly coronavirus,
Where I'm from, when the first week of lockdowns were being announced, what was the major store item that quickly ran out, including our Mega Wal-Mart? Not canned food, water, and other necessities of life.
Of all the silly, no clear thinking things was Toilet Paper!🤣😂😅
Can you imagine a lone survivor searching desperately for food, each home he scavenges, only things found are pantries stock piled with toilet paper!🙄😅

I spent some time working with a guy who had special training (British SF) things he told me:
The more you know, the less you need to carry
Roads and trucks make you a target easily spotted and easier still to catch/dispatch
a fire at night can be seen for miles, in daytime smell for miles
if you have a firearm it does no good to you if you pack it away from quick access, and if you use it, the sound may just draw in more foes since it will be heard for miles, while a blade is very quiet, and re-useable hundreds of times, you can't carry hundreds of rounds of ammunition, it is too heavy. He said a fire arm is a 'last resort' item if you have no other options or a way to signal your own team you are in big trouble, he said for women pepper spray is better, quiet and will give them enough time to get away, and since it is not leathal they will not hesitate at the moment of need, just to be dis-armed.
If you carry too much you just tire yourself out - don't carry anything that you can't just find another one of up ahead if wehn you need it,
always have 3-5 different ways to make a fire if you need it,
don't rely on canned food - it doesn't last forever (ask the Franklin Expedition)
If you draw attention to yourself you can make yourself a target (if you look like you have a lot of gear and supplies, someone without will come after you)
if you stand out like a threat, you will be treated as one, better to seem weak (even when you are not) look poorly supplied (even when you are not) then to appear like a good source of supplies and a potential enemy.
He recommended minimal travel, until you are sure of your surroundings, unless there is some urgent reason to depart, better to sit still and observe, after all it is far harder to be detected if you don't move around un-necessarily, What is the hurry, if you have supplies for a number of days and are not in any immediate danger, shy are you trying to draw attention to yourself.
He also recommended caches of supplies hidden rather than trying to carry too much or keeping all your critical items together in a nice bag prime for someone else to spot and want to take from you leaving you with nothing. Hiding supplies where no one will find them but you know where they are can also be used to trade with others ( for supplies they have or your life)
He put a lot of stock in "Comms" ability to communicate short wave and radio - all using gear driven wind-up energy souce with short term rechargeable batteries. And a dedicated ultra-filtration unit for water, - Boiling only removes the organic threats not chemical
Clorox bleach has a shelf life of about 6-9 months,
Last thing i remember him saying - If the SHTF some day, just remember most will not survive more than one or two winters"

So why does he only have a can of tuna?!?! This story has potential but needs better thought put into the content. Seriously, most of us would have taken the knife out and opened the can, then drank the water/oil from the can before digging out the tuna with our fingers or the knife. @@PrepperAction Is that really the answer you are going with? A 'mystery' or 'twilight zone' episode? It seems that it was only a mystery for the first 3 minutes after waking up from the 'whatever event'. Is this supposed to be like 'The Langoliers' or more like 'Time Enough at Last'? If the people just suddenly disappeared with no reason, I'd be actively looking for people, or at least answers as to what happened to them. If that 'marauder' was one of the last 3 people in LA, I can promise that they wouldn't be actively attempting to kill anyone. And no one would be camping under an underpass with a candle, if they were all alone. This is just another reason I call bullshit. When GOOD questions come your way, you make up some silly premise that makes absolutely no sense.

He mentioned it once... then seemed to abandon the idea. Who knows where he plans to go now. We never really find out why he needs to get home, but it must not have been that important if it takes a year to finally get there. I'm sure the family dog probably ran out of food, the aquariums dried up, and his electric bill is well into the thousands because of a bathroom light that he forgot to turn off. His groceries have probably all rotted, his grass is about 10 feet tall, unless the squatters moved in, and claimed the place for themselves.

    Luke
    Chapter 13
1 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?
3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?
5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.
7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?
8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:
9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.
10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.
12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.
15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?
16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
18 Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?
19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
20 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?
21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
22 And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.
23 Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,
24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
25 When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:
26 Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.
27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.
29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.
30 And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.
31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.
32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
33 Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.
34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!
35 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

    Ephesians
    Chapter 5
    1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
    3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
9(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
    18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
    19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
    20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
    25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Info was on target. Well researched.
It just reminded me of 45 years of corporate safety films. Can only take so much of someone think/talking to himself.

Thanks for making the video. As an o.t.r. driver I'm totally prepared and learning all the time. As we all try an get through the covid crap. I enjoy this type mental exercise. I read 20 or more comments. Putting scenarios into perspective such as, unlikely but possible, likely and probable etc. (ie. world wide pandemic possible but unlikely) or, e.m.p. possible and unlikely but given our current 'tensions' ?? Thanks again, I'll bet it was kinda fun too?

Everyone in the comments are talking about hitting up Walmart and scavenging houses. That would defeat the whole purpose of the film. The Producer made it pretty clear in the beginning what the filmmakers ntentions were. Oh ya, lets make a film about a guy scavenging Walmart. Morons.

I may have tried making friends with the cat. Someone to talk to besides myself. I'm thinking people disappeared suddenly and in the city there should be stores with food and supplies. Dumpsters always a good place to look. Good he had some things like a knife and the folding cooker. Some of the old cars he came across may have predated the computer age and may have been operational after an EMP strike. The super candle was cool, very good thing to know. Something I didn't know. Some very good tips here. Did Alpo and Penski help fund this? Overall good film.

Thanks, but no funding, I just had some ideas and went out to film every weekend for a month to film this, set up my own camera on a tripod and just went for it.

What he needs most is information. If in fact there has been a catastrophic event, the first question must always be, "is it safe here?" The location that the opening sequence was shot in appears to be just south of the Border Patrol Checkpoint on Interstate 5 near San Onofre, CA. The flash seemed to come from the direction of the nuclear power plant there. My first thought would be that I was now in a red zone and need to head upwind or at least as far as possible from whatever just happened. Food and water won't help much if you swell up like a Ball Bark Frank from a lethal dose of gamma radiation and the last thing that he needs to do is ingest anything from the immediate area.

There were "flashes" in several places of the video and I think they were meant to show time passing, not a nuclear event. But the reality of it is that there wouldn't be any huge "flash" from a nuclear reactor. They do not go super critical like a nuclear weapon. You might get an explosion if you brought too much fissionable material too close to another amount, but it wouldn't be like a nuclear weapon detonating. And if some emergency had occurred at such a power facility you would have seen radiation alert signs all over the place as well as marked routes of egress from the city. The signage is pre-made and lets face it, you are NOT going to be able to evacuate an area like San Diego or L.A. in even 2 days so they would have put the signs up to aid in the evacuation.
I would be more afraid of the test facilities the government has like the one that was in the hills around LA . Site 4 was a part of the Santa Susana field lab in Southern California Simi Hills in Simi Valley, California. Site 4 had a number of "accidents" over the years. Now THAT is a real nightmare situation just waiting for an accident as it is located in the middle of very populated areas. I think the whole thing is closed these days but the contamination is very bad.
There is a very good site about this place if you are interested in such: data.nbcstations.com/national/KNBC/la-nuclear-secret/
