His ‘friend’ was the voice in his head that said “there is no-one else, you are all alone, accept it and push on” the ‘woman’ over the radio was another voice in his head, that was the HOPE he was holding onto that someone else existed, that he was not alone. The truth was too hard to accept, so he had a battle raging within.
At the end he was having to come to terms with reality. He decided to accept the truth.

This film is so well done its hard to express. I watched it through just once but it stuck in my head for weeks. I couldn't shake the idea of, how lonely do you have to be before your mind creates an imaginary friend. Then how long of living with your figment does it take to forgo the chance to find another real person. This scenario haunted me. Then it hit me.........there is no other person......he is so utterly alone his mind is creating a new friend. It was when he told Ford the radio is how he found him that drew me to the conclusion, there is no one else. Just a desperately lonely person with no hope. Well done.

This film brings reality to a real trauma these folks suffer. It moved me, good job relating and drumming up a ton of emotions in me. I spent two months homeless a few months ago, I lived among and witnessed people actually like this
Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side Of Heaven, search it, watch it.
I too had a choice to make, stay homeless and live free, somewhat, or answer my daughters call to let her take care of me. I answered the walkie-talkie. This really brought me back to those moments living alone in my head. Many are not as fortunate to have a hand out of the hell.

Some Lessons: Always keep your batteries charged, walkie talkie on, and use a large hilltop antenna to reach far way persons who just might be listening. Just dont IGNORE the signals. Only at the ending is I fully understood this film: hopeful, yet ironically -hopeless in a sense... Definitely a must-see.

I’m also assuming the whole thing has impacted the protagonist heavily in that he tried to take his own life as mentioned by his subconscious (Ford).

    • @patrykbielecki1949

Ford is not real too, he is a coping mechanism of luca. Notice: when ford scared luca in the beginning, ford said he always knows where luca is. Also when they walked on the traintracks ford was reminding luca of good and bad memories, saying; “you couldnt even slit your own wrist”, wich is clearly luca talking to himself. Also ford claims that luca smells, whilst he himself is pretty odorless. Propably along with some other hints i didnt notice. In the ending, ford suddenly disappears from underneith luca, and pops up behind him, wich is another hint to his non existence. Your right that the voice from the walkey talkey in the end is lucas imagination cuz she knows his name, and it is symbolising hope for finally finding another human being. Ford says “if you answer that i’ll be gone forever”, not because he wants to leave or for no reason, but because luca knows deep down that the voice is imaginary, and if he answers it’ll be gone. Thus the hope for finding someone will be “gone forever”.

I'm guessing he answered the call. May not be best to listen to the part of oneself that is always the negative part. I was wondering if Ford was real or in his head. Hard to imagine only one person left no matter what happens. Great film. Emotional, believable, from Luca's dirty appearance to his attempt to pound Ford to death. Well written and acted.

  • @BooTeaCheeks
    @BooTeaCheeks 4 роки тому +2

I don't think Ford was anything negative. I think Ford was a manifestation of Luca's survival instinct. The very first thing we see Luca do is steal jewelry, where as Ford gives him canned food. Luca want. Ford tells Luca to bathe, encourages them to go to an area with a warmer climate, discouraging suicide, and ultimately to stick with him and not the woman. Stick with your survival instincts. If people have been gone for so long and she somehow survived she can't be as defenseless as she sounds, it could be a trap. If she is defenseless than it's going to be a burden on his survival, which he is already barely doing. There is a hierarchy of basic needs and unfortunately shelter and food come before companionship. His survival could be threatened by her and in those living conditions there would be no way to reproduce.

Yes. It avoids the major failure of this kind of movies : just showing materials... Sad and bad behaviors without any reflexion on the most important which "what's happening in our brain and heart / soul when facing lonelyness and nothing left. I mean facing hard times of lacks of everything... People and material penuries.
In 1972 a french moviemaker made a film in a very nice desertic region I love located south France.
The scenario is different but very interesting becose of the dialogues... And situations it sat between 2 "clans" of suvivors after a nuclear attack. A very realistic film... With trully details of what we could have to face if...
Actors were perfect but the movie maker took them among the best we had in France at this period.
For me it s THE best film I saw about " how will we act if ... In case of a collapse"
Ethic... Bad and good behavios... Shock impact on everyone... Generations conflicts... Usefull Competencies ...
      Lack of technologies remedies ...
weapons or peaceful acting... Memories of Old times and new hopes for future... State Power and institutions vanished how to live without rules... Love affairs and reproduction of the human being race... How to reset nature after disaster. Etc etc.
      Nice movie "Malville"... Inspiring one.
with JL Trintignant M Serrault J Villeret J Dutronc... As actors.
The end is a "must"...after one year of fights and difficulties then a peaceful and hopeful times with improving ways of life and surviving... State rescue services took them all... Forced them in fact and sent them in a medic and psy reservation camp...except 3 of them who escaped. State authorities declared the whole region forbidden zone for human settlers and reserve it for their "scientific future tests". We see them on a raft... they are escaping on a river. Their white horse following them freely on a hill... A nice symbol of freedom and stubborness... Rebellion against state bullshits.
      A very humanistic film.

A cultural trope imagines the female mantis as a femme fatale. About a quarter of male-female encounters result in the male being eaten by the female.

If this corona ordeal gets any worse I am going somewhere up northern wilderness area deep enough in where I can live the remainder of my life in solitude if I want to. "i know how to build a cabin with wood heating and cooking and my hunting and trapping and fishing skills will sustain myself quite comfortably. I always was sort of of hermit for all my life so far so in short I have no need for others socially. I always end up hurt in some way or another by letting people in my life. If I want company I will get a dog or a goldfish . Humans carry too much extra baggage and drama . I have no use for that. Even if they manage to stop this virus I am still going this really woke me up as a signal to get while the getting is good before something worse happens trapping me here in a failing society to begin with. I guess this is my way of saying goodbye and I wish you all good luck . "I'm outta here ! "Peace".

(pronounced with slavik-y, semi-Luka accent)-> I did find myself wishink/hopink you could springboard from here to a more extended length project. The dialog establishink zee pessimist/optimist "characters" was kinda blatant, especially after the 18 minute mark where it's established they've been together 7 years and/or it's all in my head and so is she. But it's still approximately 2.375 truckloads better than MY movie, cause I ain't never evenk made von!

What? Ford was imaginary and Luca chose to give up a chance for another survivor ? I am a little confused but the film was different and really quite good when I think about it.

I wonder if his imagined friend Ford was trying to prevent him from at some future point killing the girl. Maybe deep down he knew he was not sane enough to properly interact. Probably because he killed the real Ford years earlier. That is why he is odorless.
The part that makes no sense is the dead bodies that looked like they died yesterday if they died 7 years ago. And the pinky finger was moving on the corpse when he was taking the ring off. I guess they were avoiding gore? What is he afraid of? Why does someone need to stand watch? If he liked the ring he probably liked other rings he saw. He would have had a bunch on a necklace.
Another thing that makes no sense is not staying in a city...where there is unlimited canned food.
He wouldn't have found a dog? We heard birds...animals must exist. Even if most dogs turned wild, there are so many that some would have been eager to be pets again. Plenty of canned dog food out there to find. And a dog would be on watch.
I think I would be flying an airplane or taking a yacht to other countries looking for people. Moving on foot? Why? Gasoline goes bad. Diesel is probably still good in the diesel trucks though the batteries would require charging. Not difficult to do though. Solar panels could do that. I think I would be looking for nice diesel camper...or even a train.
A nice farm would be not so bad either. Cows, chickens, turkeys, sheep, fresh vegetables. Requires some work but much better than canned and you will be down to military rations after 20 years and likely starve if you don't learn to grow stuff.
