  • Sony was the first to implement the 1 inch image sensor in a compact camera and that took the world by storm. It was so successful that even Canon and Panasonic came up with their own variants. I found the original RX100 in the used marketplace and bought it out of curiosity. I took it out for some shutter therapy action, and I shared my thoughts about the Sony RX100 that changed the landscape of compact cameras.

    My mum bought a mark i, she knows nothing on cameras but told the camera store man 'i am going to italy for vacation, and I want to take good photos indoors, like cathedrals." And the man told her in the extra compact space there was only one option she should look at. (It was a good choice! I think he was right.)

      @sergomargo6622 Місяць тому

      @@mrtimtom2631 tto get bokeh you need to use the same photo-optical principles - focal lengths are better from 100 to 200, the subject is closer to you and further from the background)) for me, bokeh is not the main goal, sometimes I increased the aperture to f8 so that everything was in sharpness. The bokeh itself is soft and visually pleasing. I like everything about 100m7. as SONY stated, this is the A9 in miniature))) all the technologies have been added. but there is no ND filter, so you have to stick an adapter with a thread on the lens. My favorite RX100 is the Mark II. Close focusing at the wide end (28mm), zooms to 100mm or so. It could get revamped and get the pop up viewfinder. I also have the RX100III, which is fine, but I never purchased the other RX100 cameras. My favorite RX camera is the RX10IV. Phenomenal do it all camera, perfect for travel.

    The RX100 VII was released in 2019, and it's pretty sure that it won't get a successor.
    For my needs, the RX100 Va was the peak of the series. Great lens, fast autofocus, useful EVF, powerful processor ... Ergonomics still aren't great, but the little rubber handgrip makes the camera usable for hours. I intended to use it only for family shots, but it's quite capable for street photography as well.

I don’t suffer like you with this camera as I have a small wrist strap and carry it in my shirt pocket It is what it is, a 12 year old camera but still highly useful nevertheless despite me having full frame Q2 and A7r2 which gets more use than the latter. I have owned the Sony RX100 Mark III for a couple of months, it took a while to get used to it, I bought a glue sticking grip Sony branded that helped with hand holding it, I got used to leaving it on and into sleep more with the EVF and lens extended at the cost of the battery, I was always blown away but the IQ of the RAW files from this tiny camera. But the reason I didn't keep it was the shutter lag, it was not instant like the mirrorless Sony, Olympus and Panasonic cameras and in street photography I would miss the perfect moment because there was a delay between fully pressing the shutter and the image being taken. I wish I could have liked it more.

    I bought my Mrs the Mk1 RX100 for her Christmas one year.. We had always loved the Sony Cybershot range and the RX series looked to be the new-gen new-pro version of those cameras.
    The low light performance was staggering at the time (and still is for a compact) and it was the first camera I ever successfully managed to use to capture the northern lights with!.. we still have it and now a Mk3... and although I have an Olympus m3/4 camera I still love these compacts as grab and go's.
    One summer I did a side-by-side comparison of photos taken on holiday using the RX100 mk3 and my iPhone... My conclusion was that the iPhone took the better "snaps", what with it's auto HDR and tricks the photos taken look as good and sometimes better than the ones taken with the RX.... but... this was due partly to the better framing and software of the iPhone but with a little post production in lightroom the RX's shots were the better "pictures" which begged the question.. given it took extra work to get the shot with the RX are these cameras relevant in today’s world?
    The best camera is always the one in your hand.

    Legendary camera, I still remember when it was released, it was amazing how a sleek compact camera was packed with such great features and delivered an astonishing image quality.
    The mk4 a mk5 are the sweet spot imo. They have many of their issues addressed and they shoot 4k at a reasonable price.
    Sadly, I think the mk7 was the last of the series as Sony has moved on and released the ZV-1 with focus on videos for content creators.

    You make some very good points about Sony in general.
    Almost every pro that I know who shoots Sony or changed to Sony from another camera system says that they did it for the professional output and not for the experience of the camera itself, citing it as a tool. Sony makes great images when you need it but seems to lack a soul to the experience of taking photos or video.
    The compact line apparently is the same way.
    Some of those same pros have second and third cameras for their non professional work and they almost all have smaller point and shoots to enjoy their photography and have canon or Fuji compacts instead.

    I think the shape is where Olympus really got the TG-6/7 right even though it's a pretty flat shape. I can hold either camera comfortably in my hand and operate it with one hand without too much trouble. I really don't enjoy trying to grab flat, slippery camera bodies. Even my Olympus EPL-8 feels nice in my hand if I'm holding it in one hand. They really add the right kinds of small features in the right places to make it easier to hold. I wish more places did that. It makes it so much easier to handle

  • @VanJazzFan
    @VanJazzFan Місяць тому

    When I was shooting with the original RX100 back in 2012-2014 before I moved to Olympus, I found that the handling was greatly improved by attaching a mini-tripod like the GorillaPod. Not only giving a firm hand grip on the camera, you could secure the camera to almost anything with the magnetic flexible legs for long exposures and unusual angles. I have some great shots of the New York city skyline at blue hour and night taken at base ISO with the RX100 firmly attached to a convenient fencepost.

The slippery body and complex (although improved over the RX100/2) menu are still annoying. Other than that I think it is an excellent compact camera. It does however come with me on long hikes/backpacks or walks where it’s size is a big plus (love the 200 equivalent lens which can be digitally enhanced to 400 - though rarely use and stop at 300). the amount of detail of such an RX100 is higher than that of the XZ1. In the Sony you have a 1" matrix. It's better to write such things when you had both to compare

      @@porcupine1974I did say I haven't been able to compare personally. I am sure you are right, I was disappointed with the soft areas of the Mk 1 RX100 lens in Robin's examples which made me compare with his.

    I bought a V3 but I couldn't stand it !!!!! the raw files were terrible and the lens distortion was unbelievable, I did one trip with it and sold it immediately i think if you shoot with MFT you may ask yourself ? what is the hype about ? so its worth a try based on its compact size but it was a massive let down the focus points are also very odd a lot of the images look just out of focus in my opinion. I just don't see what people like about this range. compared to to any Pen or Pano models its just not even a contender ! think your summary is spot on Robin exactly what i found ! Keep up the good work

      I think there is a place for super small, one camera to do it all. No Micro Four Thirds can come close to that setup, even the Panasonic GM1 has too many compromises. Of course, if you don't mind using larger cameras, we have much better options out there.

    I’ve used the m7 but stopped as it suffers from a major issue: mediocre image stabilization. Over 40% of my stills shots were unusable given massive blur. And this while taking static objects, outside, during sunny days, in auto mode with image stabilization on. Other negatives include an unpleasant screen, an uneasy to hold and operate body (too small, slippery), a very fragile feel etc. Given the 1300 euro price, these are not acceptable to me
    Still, if used for video with a tripod, then it’s ok

      @marcrodet4900 - in my opinion, the RX100s tend to default to too low a shutter speed. If you can use Auto ISO, with Auto ISO Minimum Shutter Speed set higher, eg 1/125, you might have better luck.

    When this one came out I was very enthusiastic about it and could never afford one.
    I ended up with a Lumix LF1. Not quite a 1" sensor (1/1.7), but a similar form factor and target. I enjoyed it, but handling was always a thing. It felt like a better phone camera, and I guess that's the idea.
    I replaced it with the Lumix G7 and handling of course was on a whole different level, as is today with my EM5 mk3. Really enjoy shooting with these over longer periods compared to the LF1, so handling is truly key.

    It’s a good point that it’s more appealing to casual shooters with big specs and small size, rather than to photographers who look for different things. I never really thought about it like that before. I used to want one of these, but now I’d much rather have something a bit bigger, with a grip (even a small grip can make a huge difference), and so on.

    I have the RX10 Mark-1 and the Canon G9x Mark-2 (which uses the exact same sensor as the RX100) . I wanted to take a picture of my new watch in dim-lighting a few weeks ago to e-mail a picture of it to someone - so obviously, I grabbed my Samsung Galaxy S22 so I can instantly e-mail picture. What a waste of time! I literally wasted 15 minutes trying to take a really good picture of it. Because the watch's glass face is very reflective and it was dim - my fancy smartphone simply had issues getting the focus correct because of the reflection on the watch's glass face; and all the pictures were very grainy when you pinch and zoom. Took ~8 pictures and all turned out like trash. So I caved in, and busted out my ancient Sony RX10 Mark-1 that was released in 2013. Voila! The first photo was flawless! It wasn't ideal having to take out the SD-card, then having to transfer it to my laptop in order to e-mail the picture, but I got the results I wanted.....from a camera that was released 11 years ago.
