Many years ago i bought an rx1r in a new condition. After a while i sold all my gear. I had many many cameras, nikon dxs, sony a7's rx100's rx10's, fuji x100's , xt-20 etc lenses etc. My only gear for the last years is this rx1 (and samsung ultra series smartphones). Rx1 with the zeiss is just a masterpiece and kills at photography most of new tech combos. I still remember some tests many years ago with my last x100iv and the differences where as night and day. Rx1r2 is an upgraded version of mark1 (evf, phase detection etc) and cannot be competed even 10 years after it's production.

Sold my X100V and picked this up the end of last year. Best decision ever! I'm thrilled with this little gem. Really wish a version 3 appears. I take this with my RX100 M7 and that's a perfect small and lightweight travel setup.

Quite a duo pairing the RX1R mii with the RX100 Vii. I’m guessing the RX1R mii gives you the sterling low light performance, and optimal close up quality, (full frame look). While the RX100 vii gives you up to 200mm zoom, burst shooting (24 fps), and video (4K). Both use the same battery model, so you can share batteries across the two. This is an expensive pairing, and I understand the Utilitarian use, but doesn’t pairing the two take away from the unencumbered form factor ethos behind the compact designs each alone offer?

I own one and it’s a brilliant camera and I’ll never part with it. I’ve never once accidentally hit the record button and actually find it perfectly placed. Anyway, best FF compact ever made. It’s built beautifully and the images are so professional it’s hard to truly believe they come out of this thing.

Regarding the placement of the video record button: menu/settings/6/Movie Button, select Movie Mode Only. This will disable the movie button while in all still shooting modes. No more accidental video recordings. The video record button will only activate once the menu dial wheel has been turned to Movie Mode. There’s one more “con” to be removed from your list! Love my little camera. I’ll love it even more once I get my recently dead pop-up viewfinder repaired…

Thanks for these videos. 🙏 After 50+ years of photography I somehow ended up with this camera. Sold everything else. Even the A7cR. Trying to get some passion back after retiring from fashion and beauty. I’m not much of a street and landscape guy but I would really like to dive deeper into the settings on this camera, like the HDR and DRO levels, etc. Plus some of the other settings that would matter shooting in RAW. The point being is to not have to think about the settings on location. So maybe a memory strategy for street, landscape, portrait. I did find some settings to mimic Canon color using the night scene but really in raw it just gave me a starting point. Even after 50+ years, I always have so much to learn.

If Sony released a Rx1r III it would end much of this x100vi scalper nonsense. Hopefully at a more competitive affordable cost than II’s msrp. The Leica Q3 would be fantastic but that price is very high end.

In the comment section seems we are having a little rx1m2 party here!
I think your last point about the love hate duality really hits home. This little camera, oddly enough, has grown on me through the years. Have been using mirrorless models for many years and none of them really left me with a special impression, they are just tools after all. Whereas m2 always gives me that urge to go out and explore the world with my eyes wide open.

I highly recommend getting the Metro Case grip. The makers are out of Austin Tx. It encases the camera perfectly and is super light and stealth. It’s made from matte black nylon 12 which is like some space light materialI. It doesn’t feel or look like nylon. I had one for my RX1 and will be receiving another for my RX1RII. I got some beautiful pics out of the RI, but the RIIs focusing is the winner for me. Great to see you share your thoughts. Keep it! I also have a Fuji xt50 and it’s lighter than that! Unbeatable for the compact size and weight. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

You can save a few millimetres in depth by using a Hoya rubber lens hood rather than the Sony (work-of-art, perforated) hood - just flip it inside-out when it's not needed.
12:43 I use an aftermarket grip which has a chunky hold for the RH and a baseplate which slots into the top of a tripod - such is the reality of shooting in my eighth decade. Frankly, if Sony had copied it they would have had somewhere to put a *decent battery* !
I must recommend the aftermarket user guide by Alexander White - it is more in-depth than the manufacturer's offering (Marianas Trench versus puddle).

I’ve had the camera collecting dust for years. I loved it so much but the nonstop battery changes drove me insane. Five batteries in a night. And many missed shots because of it. Also missed tons of shots bc of that dang record button. I will try changing settings. I loved the camera for its great lowlight shooting.
I have a Leica Q2 and the A7Rv but the Leica is broken and the RV is super heavy. I was thinking of selling it for the A7CR, but everyone complains about the low resolution of the viewfinder. Now that you are saying it’s the same as in the M2, I am going to get mine out tonight and see if it’s acceptable enough after using the RV. I really miss having compact.
Idk how you cope with the batteries on this thing. Otherwise I totally agree with you. It’s the reason I have not been able to just let it go even though haven’t used for years.

In fact, I just bought a second one while they are still available new on B&H, because I’m afraid SONY has given up on niche market with fixed lens cameras now that they just rolled out A7CR, for which I can totally empathize what you said in this video. So, trust me, you are not the only guy totally sold to this Eight year old camera here. 😊

I guess leica wants their camera have good viewfinder, battery and leica m style form factor. After all the lens is much bigger because of its wider angle, aperture and also good manual focus feel. Which is important if one has used M bodies. Its much better manual focus feel than any other fixed focal lenght cameras.

I own both, the RX1 and the Leica Q, and both are different animals sharing the same philosophy. Apart from build, a stunningly simple OS and slight edge on optics by Leica, the main difference is focal length. I love the 28 mm look, Leica colors and solidity of the body. However, I cannot bring myself to sell the RX1 as it, too, has some unique talents.

Great video Justin! Been on the fence about this one for a while, especially with the release of the A7CR but man the lack of any sort of weather sealing hurts since I want to take it everywhere for traveling and use it in the not most ideal weather environments haha, guess it's definitely not that type of camera.
It wouldn't be too bad if it wasn't so expensive but the set photographer angle might just push me over the edge and use it alongside another weather sealed compact camera for traveling. And while I agree it might feel a bit limited to have a fixed lens, as of late I just want to get a camera that's mostly complete and ready to use without anything beyond the basics and the RX1R II hits the spot well despite the downsides, thankfully I'm in no hurry to get it yet haha

Great video, really enjoyed it - I had the RX1R for a few years, I regret selling it because looking back some of my favourite images were shot with it. The small size was great but it was a little bit too heavy for an everyday carry compared to a Ricoh GR also I really like to use manual focus and that 'focus by wire' thing really bugged me, I use my beloved Leica M8.2 as my option for a 'pop a camera into the bag' just in case inspiration hits and I figured I didn't need (or couldn't justify) both,. I keep looking at the RX1R ii online though... that lens with the full frame sensor is amazingly versatile but still has a look that's very distinct... it's tempting :)

So, the size to performance I agree is unbeatable, but this gen of Sony sensors is not as sensitive in low light as the newest stacked APSC sensors... I guess you can feel that every full frame sensor no matter the age is better, but, like, there are objective tests.
Normally I wouldn't mention it something devils advocate-ish like this, but it's as $3,000 camera, so it can be compared to other similarly priced cameras.

19:15 Not a chance. The dampened mechanical shutter of the M10P is quiet, but still noticeable and audible. For reference: the Olympus E-M1/E-M1II/E-M1III mechanical shutter is more quiet than the M10P, even the Canon 5DsR with it's dampened mirror and shutter is as quiet as the M10P - but not nearly as quiet as a leaf shutter.
20:41 Many leaf shutters have limitations as to the shutter speed possible at a given aperture. Keep that in mind. While the top shutter speed may be something like 1/4000s, the camera might not be able to hit that speed at f2 for example. Depends on the camera and lens. But common limitation with leaf shutters.

It is quite hated online but I do think it can work as an everyday carry and the quality will be up there with any EDC camera and even some proper mirrorless cameras. It has phase detect AF, No EVF or mechanical shutter if you can live without those I don't see why it's soo bad.

Nope, the EVF isn't the same like in the A7CI/II/R. Actually they're very different. It's annoying that everybody tries to claim, that just with the specs alone you know whats inside the EVF. The new EVF of the CII/R has a new panel that is way brighter, has more contrast and completely new optics infront of it. When you look throug it, the image looks sharper than the EVF of the A7IV.

@@JustinPhillip I miss having a compact. I'm pondering between an used rx1rii and a x100vi, or saving some money upgrading from an a7riii to an a7cr.
I hate the rendering of the x100v, but the x100vi is pretty much perfect.
Looking at raw samples from both the rx1rii and x100vi, both seem to resolve about the same resolution, but the x100vi rendering has much higher contrast and nicer looking colors, comparable to what I get with my 35mm gm.
That plus dust resistance, 6 stops of ibis, 10 bit 4k video, built in 4 stop nd filter, better battery, better continuous af, in camera raw editor, and easy wireless transfer of 10bit heif files for quick phone edits. Even high iso files are looking pretty close.
The only thing going for the rx is the size as the x100vi doesn't seem pocketable at all once you put the filter adapter, but you can fit the rx sideways in some pockets thanks to the gr sized body.

@@vincenzodellama7158Its your decision, but with everything you described, I don’t know why anyone would ever get the Sony, RX1Rmii at the prices they are going for still, $3200 new. You don’t get the tiny size but for that money you’re in the ball park for a 60MP, Sony, A7RV, that does give you that all everything flippy screen and loads of modern goodies. I don’t own it but Your Fuji Film, x100vi camera you’re considering is 1/2 the price, its brand new, leagues better in battery, offers a much more tactile and enjoyable shooting experience, and will whip this thing with its 2024 autofocus, color rendering options, (jpg film simulations), and app support. I personally just bought an open box, Sony, A7C as my take everywhere camera prior to the Fuji film, x100VI release at a steal of a price, so I’m not in the market for another camera, but if I were I’d be thinking about the Fuji film camera. The 42MP, tiny body, and beautiful photos of the RX1R M2 sound great but there are way too many trades and compromises for the age, technology, and the money. The money, the money, the money! Ifffffff it was $1500 not $3200 maybe for my money worth thinking about but even then that would just bring it into the realm of considerations for me.

I’m about to pick one up tomorrow used but in near new condition. But I have two concerns.
    1. I used to own an A7R2 and hated the colour science of that sensor. I found that it would tend to lean towards green and yellow. Especially with skin tones and I’d always have to dust it in post.

I really prefer the A7rII, it is the same camera but better and the size difference if you attach the 35 2.8 Zeiss is only the EVF which is way better than the one in the RX1rII and the battery... it is not even comparable. The battery in the RX1rII is so small that it can not shoot video in 4K and it lasts around 200-250 shots tops, the A7rII can do more than 2x of that. And the AF on the A7rII is way better than the one in RX1rII.
The only good thing about the RX1 series is the central shutter and the crazy flash sync speeds, also the quiet actuations about this.
PS There are 2 other lenses that can work great on the A7rII - the Sigma 30 2.8 with a small modification and the Samyang 35 2.8 - both are smaller and lighter than the 35 2.8 Zeiss.
PS2 I really do not like the Sonnar 35 2.0. Do not get me wrong - it is sharp. What it lacks is character. The bokeh is phone bokeh smooth and there are some CA that ruin the image here and there.
PS3 - that record button was there since the first E mount cameras and it is on purpose - to force you to buy the 3rd gen A7 cameras :D. On the A7rII I set the C1 to be the movie record button.
