Mat - I am always appalled when I read nasty comments. Below I got sucked into a conversation and lost my patience. I apologize. Thanks for all your fantastic posts. Once, when asked her opinion on Callas, Nilsson replied: "On a good day Callas is better than all the rest of us put together."
Fabulous. I hate to say it, even though I think Callas's interpretation of this role superior to Nilsson, most of the time I just want to hear someone like Nilsson belt it out! Again the sound is fantastic! And also, bravo to Nilsson!
@@jazzychazzy007 Yes, there are a couple of surviving moments. But the “In questa reggia” recording which has circulated for years is unfortunately a forgery. What remains sounds fantastic.
The orchestra and the conducting is very interesting.. nilson is great with an exceptionnal phrasing, but for me the best live of this aria is caballe in Paris in 1981. ( i am not at all a caballe fan and i do think she killed her vouce singing turandot too soon. After 81 caballes voice will Nevers be the same. Anyhow this aria in Paris is totally exceptionnal)

I wish a recording of Callas’s 1949 performances as Turandot had been preserved. But we’re so blessed to have so many renditions by Nilsson.
@@matOpera Yes Yes Yes but it seems to me I have heard little snippets from Buenos A, no? I'm sure it was the Turandot of all time!

@@jazzychazzy007 It’s intellectually dishonest to call it the best of all time basing off that short snippet. Her later version was eh.
