    You know how much I love Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the rest of the Rhône Valley appellations so, naturally, I very much enjoyed this outstanding video and, in fact, I’ve already watched it more than once. It’s an excellent overview, packed with relevant information and valuable insights that reflect the depth and extent of your knowledge and understanding of CdP - all in just 3 minutes and 52 seconds. I really appreciate your discussion of the terroir including the significance of the stone pebbles and the mistral winds. Also appreciate your mention of garrigue which I personally consider to be a significant and endearing characteristic of CdP wines. Thank you for making this stellar video. It’s a must-watch not only for CdP and Rhône fans like me but also for all wine enthusiasts. Cheers, John!

      @@AttorneySomm You’re welcome, John! Also, this video brings back memories of my recent trip to the Southern Rhône. I can’t wait to enjoy my CdP and Gigondas wines from that trip (many of them your recommendations) but most of them aren’t with me yet. I’m so worried about my Rhône bottles already - so worried, I’ve now started praying for their safe transit.

    I tend to like the "old" style of Cdp, a bit more than new style.
    And i do age mine about 10 yers, depending on vintage.
    But they are some of my favorite wines. High quality, well made, just awesome wines. 😁

    could be argued that wind is a defining factor for Châteauneuf. obviously it is always a combination of many things but constant and intense wind seems to be the most significant one of the parameters at play.

    Great information as always. I’ve not had a Rayas yet, maybe one of these days. 😁. That reminds me I still need to go shopping, your last video had some great cellar defenders in it, any from the southern Rhône you’d recommend? Or is there a past video that explains it? Cheers. Ever thought of doing a best “Vin de France”/“IGT” video ? If you have, can you point me to it? Cheers.

    Good stuff. I opened the first of a half-case last autumn and my notes included the instruction to try again in a year. You suggest 5-8 years after the vintage for optimum enjoyment, whereas, for my palate, in good years like '15 and '16 I prefer 8-12 years, depending on the house style.
    I almost decided to compare Gigondas '15 with ChNduP from the same year at the forthcoming wine evening this Saturday but, because of the note to leave it for a while I have stuck with my original decision of '15 Crozes from Perrin v the Gigondas. A bit false because the Crozes, obviously, is 100% syrah, whereas the Gigondas is 70% Grenache and 15% each of S&M (if you'll pardon the expression). The fizz will be a grower Champagne v Villa Maria (which is made using Charmat, so I thought that might be interesting); the white, Aussie v French viognier (but not Condrieu); and, finally, not blind but the cheese will be served with 10 y.o Tawny and a sticky from the Loire (or a Sauternes, depending on how generous I am feeling). I am trying to convince the group, including a Frenchman, to ditch red wine with strong cheese: there are far better alternatives.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for weighing in. Some will definitely age a bit longer. 5-8 is probably the minimum if you don’t open within the first 1-2 years.

      @@AttorneySomm hello, John. You asked for feedback on our wine evening, which took place yesterday, a while back. In the end I decided to compare Gigondas with ChndP, 2015. All preferred the Chateauneuf and most preferred the French viognier to the Yalumba 'Y' series, once it had opened up in the glass.
      I will hoover up the remnants during the week - having a rest from alcohol today.

    Nice glen plaid sports jacket. Looking sharp! Shameful, to admit I don’t have any Chateauneuf-du-Pape in my cellar. For reference I’m more of a Bordeaux guy than a Burgundy guy. So in your opinion what are some producers and vintages, at a reasonable price point, I should seek out to cellar mid term?

      WTH, YT! "S. Rhone are for [poor people] food, like hearty soups, stews & casseroles." That's what the food of S. Rhone matches. Spanish Campesino is a "person of the land", not necessarily Poor. Oh look, somebody wrote "strong cheese", elsewhere. They need to be shadow-banned for writing about "yeast infections"!
      @rjo--I gave you most of the info you requested. But YT, with their infinite wisdom, needs to protect you.

      Hello. I have some other videos where I recommend specific wines. Don’t have this sort of ranking and it will take some time to pull something like that together. Rayas is the gold standard but expensive. After that Clos des Papes, Pegau & Beaucastel are up there.

  • @wren460

    I have no idea why I dont like Chateauneuf Du Pape wines. I have tried them many times from many different vintages but it seems my palate was not made to like this particular type of wine. Just yesterday I had a Domaine De La Janasse 19 along with an Andersonns Conn Valley Eloge 2007 and a Clos Apalta 2018 and by far the Chateauneuf was the least favorite. In my cellar I have just 2 ChDP (Vieux Telegraphe 2007) and frankly I have no rush in opening them. My biggest concern is that I simply do not understand what is that I dont like about them like it happens with Italian wines that I find them extremely acidic and I dont buy Brunellos.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  4 місяці тому +3

      Thanks for weighing in. Maybe just not your thing. You might try one with higher Mourvèdre like Beaucastel. Those are a bit different.

      As with Bordeaux, all European wines need that region's food. S. Rhone are for peasant food, like hearty soups, stews & casseroles. Sangiovese needs Lasagna; Nebbiolo needs hearty sauces like Osso Buco. Calif. & Aussie reds are for appetizers or BBQ. The only time I would want an Italian "bordeaux" is if the meat is cooked with Italian spices.

      I know you might have some fight against climate science because of the news you might watch but winegrowers, agricultural workers and vintners aren't stupid with their vineyards. Temperatures recorded in the Southern Rhone, where the wine is produced, have been getting intense in the past ten years with record droughts and Attorney Sommelier is simply stating the region's winegrowers and agricultural workers' overall observations with recorded temperatures and never before seen droughts.
