Reason for the higher rev range at first start up is older vehicles like these start with a higher idle speed to reach proper operating temperature first. After which it’ll begin to drop and finally idle around the 700 range. If you look at newer engines and how newer vehicles idle at start up, they begin at a low idle because it has better monitoring and sensors to be able to obtain the best air to fuel ratio. These older model vehicles don’t have as good sensors and monitors to keep the rev range low at initial start up.
Dirty mass airflow sensor reduces fuel economy not the idle. It usually the dirty "Idler control valve sensor" that causes the idle to drop to 500-600 RPM. This problem causes the alternator not to be able to produce enough charge and Overtime, this reduces the life of your battery and alternator. This happened to my 2007 Camry, and the only way is to clean the ICV sensor and lubricate the valve, which sits on intake air manifold right after air filter assembly.
I fixed my 06 Vitz in 5 minutes, adjusted the accelerator pedal switch block its adjustable just go behind the accelarator pedal and you will see a slotted black box with 2 screws, loosen the screws and moved the black switch box and few milliemetres and hey presto idleing beautiful.I dont disagree with what Peter is saying, but my car was nearly stalling and badly shaking, will do the correct things soon.
Today..i and my wife struggling in d middle of traffic jam..with 38deg c..sweating.. Found your video..do exactly as you did..and the car idling ok..its was the sensor dirty..thank you for tour videi..that make someone there life much more easier..thank you
Thanks for this video. Appreciated. The Australian 2008 engine is not the same as this. I found my sensor. It's smaller and easier to remove in slightly later engines. After a good clean idling seems to be perfect now. They want $250 for a new one here in OZ so maybe try removing and cleaning first.
Actually I had this problem with an 06 corolla now I’m having it with an 06 Matrix 1zz ... cleaning the MAF sensor did help. I also replaced the PCV valve at the same time. Doing the same thing on this matrix and the timing chain tensioner
I have worked on Toyota's for almost three decades. The mid 90's and newer have been prone to intake manifold gaskets leaking causing a wide variety of problems.
Before you take anything apart you should perform an idle relearn procedure. Turn key to run, then off twice without starting engine, then start engine and wait a few minutes until idle settles in the 800rpm range.
Had rough idle issues on my 2010 Corolla for years. Did the basic checks; air filter, mass airflow sensor cleaning, etc. Turns out it was a leak from the intake manifold and a sticking PCV valve. Replace the valve since you already have access to it when replacing the manifold gasket.
This week my corolla started acting weird. Cold start : 2200 rpm After less than 1 minute, it started jumping between 600 and zero (!) rpm I cleaned the mass air flow sensor like you did, disconnected the battery for 10mins and it seems fixed now! Thanks, keep up the good work ;)
Clean the throttle body too.I would remove, clean or replace the PCV also as doing all 3 of there (incl the MAF in this video) Doing this every 4 or 5 yrs whilst doing a service on the car when you change the spark plugs is a good thing,as you won''t forget to do it all in one go.This is what i do...never had an issue on my 2002 Yaris in 12 yrs of ownership.Don't use cheap supermarket petrol is another strong advice,95% of the time i use Bp,Shell or Esso.

When the engine is cold like in the morning, it is normal for the rpm to be high for some minutes. It should go down as it reach operating temperature.
Yes because it revs higher as the cold engine is trying to warm up quickly, so as to reach normal operational temperature as quickly as possible. More important in winter times where the temperature gets really cold and when it snows as well.
Hello, thanks for your video. One question, I have a 2008 Toyota Corolla with 230,000 km of manual gearbox, 1.8-liter engine, type 1ZZ-FE. The fault is that when you turn it on it starts with 1300 rpm and as it warms up it goes up to 2000, that is, it does the opposite since I understand it should go down to about 900 rpm. and when I'm hot I go out and when I make the gear changes I see that the rpm oscillates between 2000 and 1000 rpm and when I continue the march the minimum is 2000 rpm. If I leave it running stopped the car stays at 2000 rpm. I clarify that with a scanner it does not give an error. Well, we took out the carburetor, total cleaning including the MAF sensor of the filter, I clarify that you cannot take out the IAC valve to clean but the carburetor body was immersed in non-abrasive remover liquids and a lot of dirt came out. We measured TPS and IAC with a multimeter, simulated with power and everything was fine. We checked the pipes that had never been touched and were spotless. We put everything together and it starts doing the same fault. Then I disconnected the EGR vacuum valve and there the rpm's dropped a little but after five seconds it accelerates and when connected it returns to 2000 rpm. The same if I disconnect the PCV valve and it idles at 200 rpm until it shuts off. Could it be a fault in the EGR vacuum valve or Crankshaft Sensor and cams (CKP and CMP)?
@@olanonanton8192 Hello, the solution was to change the intake manifold and throttle body gasket and apply the correct torque, which was 89-90. Greetings

Hello Peter, When I start my Toyota Vios(2007) w/ 1.3 VVT-i engine, it starts with 2500-3000revs. After about 2 minutes, it will go down to 1000revs. Is there any problem in my car?
Dude, the area of the MAF sensor you were referring to is the intake air temp sensor. Time is combined with the MAF. The actual MAF part is inside the passages next to the air temp thermocouple. If you look inside these passages you will see two small "wires". That is the MAF part of the sensor. That must also be cleaned. Very carefully.
It help a lot to use a small film of electric grease or vaseline on o ring. So you don’t pinch it and it slide right in and seals. Electric grease also conditions the rubber o ring
Hello Mr. Peter. I have 2005 year Avensis with 1.8 VVT-i engine and I have had many problems caused by abs sensor. Now I have fixed that and now when I stop the car the idle drops to 600 rpm and goes back to normal after few seconds. It keeps doing that again and again every time I stop the car. I have checked the mass airflow sensor, although it's kinda new. Do you have any ideas what would be causing the problem? Thanks.
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor okay thanks a lot. I got the fault codes and it gave me codes P0171, P0174, P0133 for every cylinder and also C1246 & C1201 for braking/ABS-system. I'll check every other ABS-sensors, measure engine compression and clean the throttle body. After that I let you know if I have solved the problems.

Will this fix issues with the Valvematic system??? Recently had the check engine light come on, following which scan codes p1047 and p264a came up. Overall, been experiencing issues with rough idle/speed cuts, laziness and car shutting off during traffic stops.
My toyota corolla 2005 ce has 264,878 miles and runs good the only problem is when u stop like in a red light the car start shaking and goes to 800 rpm but driving the car dont do that But the only way the car dont shake when u stop is when u have the ac higher and the fan is always on and stays on 900 rpm with ac What can i do ? My husband does the proper maintenance every 3,000 or sometimes less then 3,000 no lights on
Check the moter mound's because they might be hard and cracked from age and above idle it'll have no vibration and maybe get some injector cleaner and put it in the tank and that should fix it
Hi Mr Finn! I have a one year old corolla 1.6 L 1Zr-fe engine. Rarely when I start the car from a cold start, there is a loud rattle which lasts a few seconds. I have googled this and some people say it is a problem with with the intake VVT-i gear which must be change. Is this true? Grateful to have your expert views on this.
This sound is normal and your car is OK. The oil pressure becomes high in engine and valve caps makes the sound. This is normal and no issue in engine. :-)
Hi Peter, Thanks for mangy good videos. I have a corolla 1.6vvt year 2006. When cold it revs 1500rpm but when hot it revs only 600rpm. It does not have this mechanical adjustment like in your video. In stead the idle air plate seems to be electronically powered. I would like to get the revs up to 800rpm. Is this possible to adjust somehow?
Haii Peter, thank you for explaining how this works. I do really like the way you show every step to take, use simple words. Much appreciated. Can you tell me if this film can be used for the Avensis Verso 2004 VVTi engine, like you other movies? And can you tell me where I can find the park assist computer for parking distance sounds? I want to put one in and put sensors on it. Thank you once more!
I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla my issue is after the engine warms up my RPM goes to below 1000 at a red light but it is not stable; the issue is it seams like it will stall the engine but there is no check engine light. if I rev-up the engine to be over 1000 RPM then it's ok. i know there is an issue but how don't I know exactly what it is? This is only when the engine is warm and at low rpm like idling at a red after it warms up it's ok... any help would be appreciated. thank-you
I bought a 2003 Toyota Yaris Verso a few months ago and then realised that when the motor was hot and I turned it off, the engine would not start again. This happens even in the evening and night. After couple of times starting and pressing accelerator (providing gas) for couple of minutes it works fine. Once it is started it has no problems of starting and stopping it again and again. When I press the brakes while driving and the car is near to stop it starts shaking a lot till it is accelerated to a speed of 20 KM/hour. The problem is more if AC is on. Hello Peter, I have a toyota yaris 2004 1.0 with 1ZS-FE, and the idling is 500 revs (make small vibrations) when the engine is cold revs to 1000 how do you think, is this a problem?
+Igor Nirca Dirty Idle Control Valve sensor causes this issue over 90% at a time. Have the ICV sensor cleaned. Also, it is wise to clean the air flow sensor for better fuel economy and quicker acceleration. I have had the same issue with my 2007 Camry. Take care of it ASAP, because in a long run, it will damage your car's alternator and shorten the life of your car's battery. At 500 RPM the alternator may not produce enough electricity to run everything in your car.

hi Peter Finn Thank you for your video.. I want to know did you mean that this air leak causes a bad idle speed in cold temperature & then become a normal idle speed in normal operating temperature? I want to tell you my problem in my Corolla 2011 1.8L the problem once I turn on the car in the morning it runs smoothly with 1600 RPM idle speed, then it decreases to 620 in normal temperature which causes vibrating in engine, this vibrating increases when i stop at a traffic light & the RPM decreases slowly to 600 then 550 then 500, i should move the gear pad to N instead of D to decrease the vibrating little, same thing happening in R, when I try to park my car & put it to R with some breaks it vibrates also and i feel it when i set on chair, I should press fuel pedal to remove the vibrating, the crazy & not understandable thing that when I turn on AC, the RPM increases too much to reach near 1000 RPM & the vibrating goes away, there is no any vibrating in the engine, what the hell is that?? I searched & spent a lot about it, I CHANGED: (spark plugs - fuel pump - throttle body - air mass flow sensor - coils) all parts are new from Toyota dealer.. I cleaned injectors by a mechanic handy.. I need a professional mechanics to advise me for any solution or possibilities of this,, Thank You & best regards..

I had a p0016 code on my 2011 corolla because because it was outta time on the timing chain by 2 teeth! That’s what I was told by a mechanic! He then went to fix my car and he charged me 450$! Afterwards I go to drive the car AFTER he said he fixed it! And now it’s throwing the same p0016 code and a p0015 and p0017!?! As soon as I drive off his parking lot! I’m so pissed off about this! I immediately turn around and let him know! He said he will continue to work on it at no extra cost! I don’t what to do at this point!?! Should I let him or ask for my money back?
Reason for the higher rev range at first start up is older vehicles like these start with a higher idle speed to reach proper operating temperature first. After which it’ll begin to drop and finally idle around the 700 range. If you look at newer engines and how newer vehicles idle at start up, they begin at a low idle because it has better monitoring and sensors to be able to obtain the best air to fuel ratio. These older model vehicles don’t have as good sensors and monitors to keep the rev range low at initial start up.
But the idiling come down but go up again
This is what happened to my car today,, thanks to Peter. Tomorrow I can point out to the w. Shop. Thanks 👌👌👌
Glad to help
Thank you Peter , you explain very well and save time for so many . kind regards to you
Two Screws, and a screwdriver, killed really good information! Keep up the good work.
Thanks and noted 👍😀

Thanks for the info!
Good info 👍😃
Replace all four ignition coils with a Denso brand, will idle extremely well if everything else is operating normal. Big improvement.
Yes, good work. :-)
Cirilo
Before you take anything apart you should perform an idle relearn procedure.
Turn key to run, then off twice without starting engine, then start engine and wait a few minutes until idle settles in the 800rpm range.
Thanks 👍😁
Had rough idle issues on my 2010 Corolla for years. Did the basic checks; air filter, mass airflow sensor cleaning, etc. Turns out it was a leak from the intake manifold and a sticking PCV valve. Replace the valve since you already have access to it when replacing the manifold gasket.
Good comment, thanks 😃👍
This week my corolla started acting weird.
Cold start : 2200 rpm
After less than 1 minute, it started jumping between 600 and zero (!) rpm
I cleaned the mass air flow sensor like you did, disconnected the battery for 10mins and it seems fixed now!
Thanks, keep up the good work ;)

Clean throttle body, set the spark plugs gap check ignition coils..

Yes
Hi did you get it resolved...I'm experiencing the problem, I have a 2002 1.8l toyota corolla.

Hello Peter,
When I start my Toyota Vios(2007) w/ 1.3 VVT-i engine, it starts with 2500-3000revs. After about 2 minutes, it will go down to 1000revs. Is there any problem in my car?
Change the intake manifold gasket trust me

Dude, the area of the MAF sensor you were referring to is the intake air temp sensor. Time is combined with the MAF. The actual MAF part is inside the passages next to the air temp thermocouple. If you look inside these passages you will see two small "wires". That is the MAF part of the sensor. That must also be cleaned. Very carefully.
Thank You for comment. :-)
Exactly what I was seeing!!! You said it for me!!! I agree with your comment. He is not seeing the other two wires!
I'd love to have a v6 Corolla I bet those cars move better
Thanks

Thanks.
Hi, your engine compression might be low or throttle body could be stuck.
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor okay thanks a lot. I got the fault codes and it gave me codes P0171, P0174, P0133 for every cylinder and also C1246 & C1201 for braking/ABS-system. Hi, maybe your engine is so worn out. Maybe throttle body replace could help
Okay i tell my husband so we can change the part , and that problem is bad for my car or what could happend?
Yes, you might need a engine replace or new piston rings. Sorry.
Try changing you fuel injectors cuz it's clogged up so the gas can't combust in the cylinder that's why it's causing to act up like that
Check the moter mound's because they might be hard and cracked from age and above idle it'll have no vibration and maybe get some injector cleaner and put it in the tank and that should fix it

Good comment, me too 👍
On my 2005 Corolla the idle when cold is steady, but when the engine is warm the idle goes up and down between 600 rpm and 1000 rpm. This makes it tricky to handle at stop lights as it will stall if you don't give it gas, and when you do give it gas it's hatd not to give it a bit too much gas, making it seem like you're a noob or an old lady.

Once it is started it has no problems of starting and stopping it again and again. When I press the brakes while driving and the car is near to stop it starts shaking a lot till it is accelerated to a speed of 20 KM/hour. The problem is more if AC is on. Can you help me in this regards?

and the idling is 500 revs (make small vibrations) when the engine is cold revs to 1000
how do you think, is this a problem?
+Igor Nirca Sounds OK. No any issues.

Hello, bad situation, if you mix the engines. Sorry, I don't never mix the engines parts, lots of issues. If I mix engines, so I must change almost engine parts and cables... !
Only difference between 1.8Vvti , 2.5 and 1.4Vvri is engine displacement. These 3 engines are similar.
That's roughly... right. But
The 2.5 machine also includes fine balancing shafts in the machine
hello peter I need to know which water line goes to intake and air on a 2003 Toyota corilla 1.8 thanks
Hi, I need to do new video.

Im having the same issue, did your car get fixed?
Hi Peter and all People,
In First of all I'd like to say good job with your channel, keep it going!
And ask you about my 1.6vvti 124HP Auris 2007.
Got RPMs hesitating at 0km/h, its like between 450rpm to 850rpm. And RPMs are hesitating while I'm driving too. Nearly noticeable but about +/- 50rpm.
Fast deaf cranky noises when the gas pedal touches floor (in this time I got 2500rpms+, and 3-5gear).
- I changed spark plugs already. One of the old one has white cover.
Rest of them between black and brown,
- Cleaned MAF,
Ah almost forgot. ECU doesnt illuminate "check engine". Computer said "no error codes".
Im thinking about "knock sensor" and timing chain.
Will you help me?
Regards Maciej
Hi, your car needs new piston rings.
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor I think you are wrong. The car is not smoking from exhaust. Not at all.
air sensor should be clean and silver not brown ???
Do you have an online resource where you get your gaskets from?
Rockauto has very good prices compared to the big chains
Hello Peter, I have a 2014 Corolla S manual, the idle rpm is too low (600) causing it to stall frequently driving away in 1st gear. I would like to bring it up to 900 rpm. The gas pedal is electronically controlled. How do I raise the rpm? Thanks! Your videos were very informative but not relevant to our situation because it is electronic.
+Ingrid H Hi, please do this service. Look my two videos: ua-cam.com/video/dTlTbgKzO9w/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/cnuqxDDbFrQ/v-deo.html
hi sir i have toyota corolla xli 2007 and i am facing (rpm unstable) issue. whenever i nutel my car gear during the driving my car rpm cauge not stable between 0 to 2000rpm please help me to resolve this issue.
hi Peter Finn
Thank you for your video.. I want to know did you mean that this air leak causes a bad idle speed in cold temperature & then become a normal idle speed in normal operating temperature? OR it causes a normal idle speed in cold temperature & a bad idle speed in normal temperature?
+Noor Isleem Hi, please visit with Toyota dealer service. They helps.
+Peter Finn thanks but they are not easy in my country.. I took the car last weekend to a mechanic & changes the gasket, it was not broken but the mechanic told it is weak & cause some leak, i changed it with a new one but the vibration still exist.. do you know some possibilities t check? even if you are not sure its ok i will accept your suggestions.. thanks
The reason people watch people like you who know a fraction of what needs to be done right with computer scan tools is the stealership charges $140 + when they can get misinformation for free like I did and it cost me a lot to fix my car right there are too many mistakes in your videos that are not even logical like you make it up cause you dont have a clue invest in factory manuals top of the line equipment Dealers dont answer the phone if you want free info where I live please stop making videos and go to wyotech and give youtube back there money there paying you
Can I use petrol to clean?
Yes, Sir
Hi guys I had the issue when I turned on my Toyota hilux it's not pick up the speed it going slowly, what can I do
Clean the throttle body.I would remove, clean or replace the PCV also as doing all 3 of there (incl the MAF in this video) Doing this every 4 or 5 yrs whilst doing a service on the car when you change the spark plugs is a good thing,as you won''t forget to do it all in one go.This is what i do...never had an issue on my 2002 Yaris in 12 yrs of ownership.Don't use cheap supermarket petrol is another strong advice,95% of the time i use Bp,Shell or Esso.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
hey Mr Peter i have a 2003 toyota corolla and the problem im having is that when i start the car for the first time like on mornings it would take very long before the car can move can you help me please as to some things i can do or check much thanks!!!
Shaun Pakeerah Hello. Of course I can help You. Please take video and send link to me. Video: the problem im having is that when i start the car for the first time like on mornings it would take very long before the car can move
You said everything went well? RPM!
Noted!
Please ask discount.
Peter Finn he seems like the type that’d just say no and mess my car up even more or something. I wish I lived around you man!
how did it turn out?
Plus when moving it moves slow then pick up speed
Ok
Sorry but if it is actually cold, like 0 deg c, your idle will be much higher at start up.
