Toyota / Lexus Rough Idle After Battery Change/Disconnect - Idle Reset Relearn Procedure

- Quick & Easy steps to fix your car's rough idle problem. When you disconnect or replace your car battery the car will probably idle rough. You need to put your car in Idle Relearn / Reset Mode to reset your car's computer idle fuel mix. This is a very easy process with great results. No tools needed. You may also have to do this when you work on the car's throttle body or alternator.
In this video you will see the drastic change this procedure made on a Toyota Camry and it should also work on your Toyota, Lexus, Scion and other similar models.

After cleaning the MAF and throttle body car was idling high and check engine light came on; car was running REALLY rough. I tried this then my car would not start. Waited a few minutes then it started and now runs great. My car has 224,000+ miles and is much needed for traveling to medical appointments. I cannot tell you how grateful I am. The idle RPM of my Yaris 2012 went well above 1000 after I cleaned the throttle body. Followed this video and its back to normal. Thanks, a million!

It also works for the reverse situation. Cleaned the 250,000 mile throttlle body after changing the plugs. Come to find out, they were the original ngk plugs. Anyhow, i got it all back together to find it now idling at 2000 rpm. Unpluged the neg. Battery terminal for 30 min. Per a different video. Brought the idle down to 1100. Found this video did the thing for 7 min. And all better. Thanks a million. (2006 3.3 Highlander)

Dude!! Thank you! I just replaced my spark plugs on my 2007 Camry and had the battery disconnected. Same iridium plugs it had and it was idling pretty bad. I drove it around thinking the computer would figure things out but still idled rough. Thank you for this!!

I haven’t drove my car for a month and the mechanic’s told me it might be a engine problem or something with the fuel system , so I checked my fuse box and it was a bad etcs fuse #10 and my car is good now.

It worked for my avenger. Just replaced the pcm and had to run this to get idle refreshed. Worked like a charm
where tf do people learn this stuff, Thank you dude! was replacing my starter in my 2005 camry and had to remove the battery and after getting the car to start the idling was awful. This video fixed my issue and thought it was something worse than a simple trick. Much appreciated!

I replaced the battery on my 2003 Camry which I’ve done several times before but this time my vehicle had all the symptoms of this video. I had an auto parts store check my alternator and they told me I needed a new alternator. Anyhow I found your video and I followed all the steps and now it runs perfectly! (No new alternator needed) Thank you for posting.

Wow that's soo much for this insight. I was very worried as I noticed my car is idling at 300rpm and was experiencing vibration. I did changed battery some days ago, have replaced the spark plugs but didn't solved the problem. Just did as you directed and now am idling at 750 rmp. Toyota Corolla 2009

I have to do this all the time and it’s a real pain in the arse. American cars get a bad rap but I never had to deal with this when I had one. I feel like this is a deliberate design to have made more people take their old Toyotas to the dealers so they could pretend to “fix” it for a high price.

Why do other videos tell you to turn the ignition on and off about three times then start the car. I tried this and it didn't work.
I tried this, didn't work, but I'll try it again.. changed plugs, coil paks, MAF sensor, cleaned throttle body, vacuum solenoid, catalytic converter after code for it, still rough idle, low mpg, not the same pickup as usual. Any ideas on what the issue could be? Fuel injectors? Vacuum leak..? 2003 camry, 2.4l engine, 175,000 miles. Ran as smooth as glass the whole time until recently. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

um thja tywont work for aan lexuis is wit hpush button start because as far as I know ther is no way to turn the car to the on then off while the brake pedal is pressed because it will ;start the car lol

I did this and it last for a few stops but after driving awhile the rough idle comes back
This happened to me last night i tried it a few times and it didn’t work so i woke up it idled at a cold start but as it got warm it killed same issue

I just put intake on my is250 and disconnected the negative battery cable, and it sits now at 500rpm and ac compressor won’t start
Same! Except my check engine light and the vsc light is on and it will barely idle at all!! I might clean the throttle body first and see if that helps.
After cleaning my throttle body, my Lexus IS350 Starts at about 1500rpms with a sputtering sound and then fluctuates to 1200rmp then back to 1500rpm then it goes into a closed loop and normalises at 1000rpm with gradual reduction over time. I've done this procedure severally to no avail and feel it's even gets worse after the procedure because previously it took less time to normalise and go into a closed loop with quicker reduction in the rpm (dropping to 600rpm in less than a minute).

Holy crap this actually worked. I have a 2009 toyota matrix 1.8L. Had very rough idle when warm. Idled about 500rpm and after doing this it now idles about 700rpm and is very smooth. Thank much!

I don't get it.. You just turned the car back on, put it in drive, and waited 5 mins.. Why didn't it just stall again? Were you pressing the gas to increase the rpms manually for the first 5 minutes?
No it’s a relearning idle procedure. Hold it in drive with your foot on the break….then turn on your emergency brake and depress the break and let it idle

I noticed the car was already warmed up when he started....
This procedure is referred to as a re-learn procedure, any time the battery
or the throttle body is unplugged will this procedure need to be done.
The car MUST be at operating temp.

Do you need to keep your foot on the brake?mine only idles low when it's in gear WITH my foot on the brake, it doesn't do it in park or rolling.
It dawned on me that it could be electrical as the brake lights come on when my foot is on the brake. Like it robs voltage from the ignition system.
@@Lw2201 that's most likely the cause. Or a vaccine leak on the brake booster
@@Lw2201 Check your battery and alternator. Dead battery or dead alternator making car run off the battery will have similar effect.

try changing the starter on a tundra , I would love to give who ever designed it a good kick in the nuts
his has nothing to do with Toyota. This procedure is the same for every single car made in the past 30 years with a computer controlled engine.
or you could just clean the throttle body.
This worked for my 2005 Camry. Before it would idle high intermittently when I stopped at a stop sign after a cold start. Thanks a bunch.👌🏿

Still works in 2024! Replaced the Battery on my 07 Tundra and i thought i was Screwwwwwwed until i did this and viola. Problem solved.
My car idle smoothly for first 2-3minutes then went back after this procedure. should I turn the car off after 2-3 minutes.
This saved my Camry! I was so worried that something more serious was going on but I was sure it couldn't be intake control valve or throttle body, or wiring since all I did was disconnect the black battery terminal to do work on my car the day before. Now I know for the future. Many thanks!

Any time you disconnect the battery the engine computer loses all its memory. Same as taking the PRAM battery out of a computer.
Its like restarting your mobile phone...it may fix few basic issues...it will reset settings to default.

Awesome fix for my 2011 Camry! Thank you. I had my throttle body cleaned out on my 2009 Rav4 which somewhat took care of the problem but now that I think of it, the rough idle in that car started after I changed the battery...if only I had researched this prior to paying for that wasted service.
lol someone made a lot of cash off you that day. you do not need to do anything to the engine. Any time you disconnect the battery the engine computer loses all its memory. Same as taking the PRAM battery out of a computer.
i wasnt really a wasted service, as cleaning your throttle body regularly is part of general maintenance
I did this for my Toyota Camry 2005 and it is still idling at 1.5 rpm.
I checked the wiring connection and found no leaks

Ok. My car is warmed up almost to half on the temperature gauge .
When i turn the key on then off. Then on completely the car starts but the idle drops real low and the car turms off, so i never can get it to relearn by just letting it idle ....any idle ?

I tried the same process, but instead of putting it in drive, I shifted into first, holding the clutch in and just sat there for a while. Sure enough. After a couple few minutes, the idle speed came up to around 700 rpm. Thank you for this video! Awesome!
I've had this problem on my Corolla every time I changed the battery or disconnected the terminals. I changed my battery yesterday and had the problem come back again and the fix in this video worked. Always thought it had something to do with the computer losing its mapping data due to the reset.
