Man, you just saved the day!!! My EGO was doing the exact same thing. Popped the cover (6 Phillips screws), jumped the RED and BLACK wire and I was off cutting the grass. If you had not posted this video I would’ve been dealing with the either Home Depot or EGO customer service in the middle of a friggin pandemic. THANK YOU!
I have the exact same problem on mine. I called EGO service dept. and explained the problem. They sent me a replacement mower, no charge. They said it was because there was no service dept. where I live (Hawaii). It came in about 2 weeks and they didn't ask for the broken one to be sent back. :) Now, because of your video, I'm going to try and fix my broken one. Mahalo (thanks) for sharing your video.
Good information for me. Today I picked up the 21" self propelled brushless with 7.5Ah batt from HD. I don't think they'll fix it here either. Hoping problem free operation for years.
Same. I live on The Big Island. Called and said I have this exact problem and without hesitation they said they're shipping a new mower to me right away. Sweet.
@@Andy-im3kj I did the same thing as the guy at around 6:00 minute mark, put a jumper wire. I disabled the safety when the handle needed to be extended .My jumper is the blue and black wire after the connector. I cut it and connected the black and blue wires then taped the joint connection.
Wanted to add my thanks to you for saving me a lot of trouble. Six screws and a little wiring and works like new. I cut the red and black wire off the connector and used a crimp connector to hold them together. I agree with you that it's a great mower. I hope they've fixed it by now. Have a great summer despite this pandemic.
Bought my LM2100 May 2019. Worked great until I moved and started folding the handle down to store it, though it made it a year even then. Then I had the exact same problem - won't start, unless the handle is vertical! Wire continuity was good, though, according to my ohm meter, so I was puzzled. So I cut out the handle angle switch, and spliced the wires, and took out the handle extension switch, doing the jumper recommended. Now it runs like it should! I do love the mower; no gas, no fumes, so quiet, battery does my half acre lawn no problem. Let's hope that Ego has been smart enough to read about these problems. It's an ELECTRIC motor, better make sure you do the wiring right, Ego!
I had the exact problem as well. only about 14 months old, and the wire was worn. I decide to just cut the wire near the connection and jump the red & black wire to bypass the switch in the arm extension. Works like a charm now. Thanks again for this video to give me the confidence to open the covers and fix it.
Thanks for the great video, saved the day (literally)!! Was digging through my papers trying to find the original receipt for warranty, and then found your video and it worked and I'm in business. So for all the rest of the Ego owners having this same issue, I did the bypass like the one shown in the video for the handle safety switch. The only difference I made was I cut the wire coming from the handle about two inches above it's connector going into the mower body and just soldered the RED and BLACK wires on the two inch side, then reconnected the jumpered plug back in. no need to fab a wire jumper when there's a connector right there. I just returned mine last night to Home Depot, broken wire to the lower end wouldn't start. Called Ego, waited in hold for 2+ hours, no answer during normal business hours. I didn't buy electric to do repairs on my mower! I ended up buying a new Home mower, what a difference in cutting!
Just wanted to say thanks for this video. It saved me a trip to a repair shop, or buying a new one. It worked like a charm. I only had to take off the main cover and put in the jumper, as you had done all of the troubleshooting.
hey man, HUGE thanks for helping me diagnose what's going on with my ~1yr old EGO mower. Wow, glad I found this and saw it wasn't just me... last month I ordered from ACME Tools the most recent generation of Select Cut (LM2135SP) and it started cutting off yesterday in the middle of my second time mowing the lawn. That black cable wrap looked cheap and suspicious to me so I thought the problem may have been the extender causing the wrap to flex and crease... re-opening and closing those extender clips seemed to re-cycle the issue but it would only work for another 30-40 seconds before cutting out again. I knew there must be something in the wiring going down to the main chassis... you confirmed it. Now let's see how helpful EGO Customer Service is going to be about this... if not then I'll give this a try. Thanks bud.
Yeah. I recently switched to the Toro mower and people have been tearing em a new ass over it. I will try the new ego soon and see if they fixed the issue. I really love the brand but hate that people are having these problems.
@@UnboxWarehouse I'm an "EGO guy" and have all the tools except the snow bower. I recently sold my old 20" EGO and fully planned on buying the Select Cut to replace it. Everyone I know with one of these has had the same problem. Just happened to me in yr 3. NO ONE services these things so your “hack” solution is what I’ll try. Thanks for posting!
One of the clips that holds the handle in the extended position had become undone and I didn't realize it. This is why mower was stopping at random. Awesome video, you saved me so much wasted time and effort!
Thank you for sharing this. After watching other videos that did not help, I watched this one since I have the exact same model and my EGO mower acted exactly the same way when I would lift the handle. I quickly installed the jumper and now I can mow again. You saved me lots of time and allowed me to continue using my beloved EGO mower.
Your "bush fix" worked like a charm. The warranty is great but not when your mower is gone for a month during mowing season. Thanks for putting this video up!!
Very helpful to see how things come apart. My self-propel switch isn't working while the handle is fully extended, just when collapsed. Now I know where to look for issues.
Thank you very much. I have the same mower as you do and I've had it about 13 months and it has done the same exact thing as yours did. It appears it's a design or an assembly or both issue that this manufacturing company needs to take care of and resolve because it's not going to go away on its own. Your video let me know that it's an issue that can be repaired. Have a great day and keep up the good work. Cheers from Fairlawn Virginia USA
I love my mower. Until one day I turned it on and it revved to high power.... and stays there. Sucks the battery like mad. So I put in for warranty work. Home Depot takes it as directed by Ego. Weeks later, they say it is a shorted "power board" and that I must have hosed it down or left it outside. Uh, neither happened. I am currently waiting on a response from Ego because the repair would be $380. Which is stupid. Love the video! Nice job!
I've only had my EGO mower for about 3 weeks and then I started having the same problem you did. While mowing, the blade would inexplicably stop. The self-propelled feature still worked. It had nothing to do with the battery because it was fully-charged. What I eventually figured out is that the handle, although firmly clipped, would slowly start to retract from its fully-extended position and trigger the circuitry that made the mower think the handle was not fully-extended. That disables the blade. I noticed that the handle only has to retract about half-an-inch before it triggers that cut-off switch. Once the blade stopped, if I tugged hard on the handle to extend it, the blade would work again. Basically, the side clips that are supposed to lock the handle in the fully-extended position weren't doing their job - although they seemed to firmly clip. I called EGO about this. They said that this was not a common problem and that the mower might be defective. They suggested that I take it back to where I bought it (Lowe's) and get a replacement. So, I did. Lowe's gave me no problems. We'll see if this problem continues. My problem, unlike yours, was not bad circuitry. Electronically, everything worked like it was supposed to. However, the handle kept slipping out of the fully-extended position. Your wiring was faulty and your solution was to electronically trick the mower into thinking that the handle was always fully extended by "jumping" the circuitry. If my problem continues, I may resort to something similar to what you did. Instead of "jumping" the circuitry, however - I think I'll just open the handle housing where the switch is located and mechanically lock the switch in the closed position so the mower *always* thinks the handle is fully-extended.
So I had the same problem but it looks like it was both the relay for the rotating handle and the extension. I wire nutted the wires for the extension and that helped. For some reason the relay on the base for the rotating handle worked but would only engage at a certain angle like what you had too. I just used electrical tape to hold it closed and is now working fine. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks so much, I had exact same issue on a unit I bought under 1 year ago. I called support but it was told due to resource limitations you wait time exceeds our support teams daily limit. I googled, watched your video, jumped black to red and voila it started.
Thank you very much for the suggestion. It worked perfectly. Thanks for saving me a ton of time! My neighbors thought I was showing off my mower's headlamps but I explained that I would have cut it earlier but I had a problem. This mower has excellent lights. LOL
Thank you for posting this vid. I fixed my mower in 20 mins! I am hearing horror stories about Ego customer service. This allowed me to bypass :) that headache. Thanks again!!!
Thank you for this, my Ego had exactly the same problem. Here in Australia service is very slow by the importing agents. Your video probably saved me a couple months without a lawn mower. I am now a subscriber.
I had the same issues with mine just today.. I spread open the wire sheathing and exposed all three wires.. black, red, blue.. I examined the wires and determined that the red sun blue wires were crimped.. .. I cut both wires around two inches from the harness clip then about 8 inches upward on he wire.. I spliced the wires together with a little bit longer of wire that I cut out and taped them up.. put everything back together and it works like a charm!!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to create and share this. Your timing and explanations we clear. I was able to properly troubleshoot, get right to the problem, and fixed my mower. Bravo Zulu to you.
Years ago, I had a Black and Decker push mower, and I ran it on a wheel chair battery. It worked, but it wasn't the most efficient, but I just charged it when done, and kept it running.
Fix works! I had to slow it down to see what wires you shorted for that. I the video you say blue and red, but it is actually the red and black that needed to be shorted for me. I wouldn't want to remove the switch for the folding function though, that one seems important to me. Your were tinkering though. THANKS FOR THE HELP! EGO isn't getting back to me about my warranty. I have had the mower since AUG 25th of 2019 and live in upstate NY, so I really have not had this for long nor had much use since the start and end of our long winters here. This seems like an issue that will be present in a lot of their mowers. I have Model # LM2102SP. Great thing about this fix is if they get back to me and will do a replacement or fix it can be reversed in 5 minutes.
You are brave for doing the repair yourself. I SHOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME! Now I am regretting it as it was a pain. Trying to reach customer service was a journey. Homedepot has had my lawn mower for about 1.25months and evertime I call they are wait on ego to delivery them a wiring harness. I have no time frame when I will get mines back and its very frustrating. EGO has shut down their customer support community page down due to customer complaining and venting on how poor they are handling warranties during covid 19. I probably won't buy another ego product every again due to this experience alone. SMH towards EGO.
Do you have instructions on how to do the jumper wire. I probably have same problem. Last season it started where it started not to work sometimes with the the flashing yellow light. Worked sometimes but now not getting it to go. Thx
Dude. My mower died today. Same issue and when I tried starting it with the handle straight up like you did... Voila! So I know that's my problem and will fix it tomorrow. I've read horrible things about ego warranty service and home depot taking months to fix. Complicating matters, home depot will no longer sell these after December of this year (Lowes will). I can't wait 3 months for a wire repair...
Though you made the fix/figured out the problem, I would have still gone through the warranty process and got a new mower anyway. Kudos to the fix though and should help anyone else who comes across this type of issue as I am a DIY person myself. Next summer I am planning to get one of these EGOs despite this type of problem as I have watched enough videos from folks like yourself who are more than pleased with their battery powered mower over a gas version.
OK....... I got tired of my grass getting junglesque due to so much rain, and, dontcha know, I chose this year to feed the grass! Anyhoo.... I digress. I isolated the wiring harness with the blue. black, and red wires and broke out my OTC multimeter. I found a break in the black wire 10 inches up from the little connector you bypassed. This is where the three harnesses all get jammed against the 2 bolts that hold the handle on the center crossbrace, under the pivot cover at its top. Being a professional ASE Master mechanic, I decided to find the break and repair it as though it were a car. I cut the wire at the break, stripped the 2 ends and used a noninsulated butt connector and put heat shrink on the repair. I then set about rerouting the mess under the deck cover and inside the handle pivot cover.... unlike they made it. I installed 2 brake bleeder caps on those sharp bolts so the harnesses will not get smashed against hard steel again. It works perfectly again, and I have no intention of folding the handle ever again! Now it works with all the safety switches intact. I wouldn't defeat my car's airbags because they may save my life....... ditto here
Thank you soo much I will do this morning exactly what u did.and u are right ,what kind off wire management is that, and nothing holding any wires and sprinkler s
Thanks so much sir for posting a video, quick and easy instead of fixing the wires , I was very close to getting a new one but after UA-cam and finally your video saved me time money and effort , a BIG Thanka
I would have had to drive 1 hour to drop off my mower at a Home Depot w/ Rental Department and wait weeks for repair. I didn't have any wire handy, I guess you could even use a paperclip. I ended up ordering a pack of jumper wires on Amazon for "Breadbox Prototyping" for 6$. Now I've got a bunch if I ever need them.
Bro thank you for this. I had the same problem with my Ego mower. Same two wires had breaks. I shorted them out at the base and boom mower works again. I really love Ego products but this was a pretty poor design and poorly tested apparently.
I will keep this in mind . I just bought one and if I had seen this before I wouldn't have bought. It looks like a poor job and a bunch of plastic junk. My cuts good but I will not fold the handles over at all. All I saw was good things before I bought mine.
Bought my EGO lawnmower in 2019. It failed to start this week. I suspect this is the issue, so I called customer support. I spent over 1h30 min waiting on the phone but eventually spoke to someone. After having me do a few things to trouble shoot the problem, they looked for a place in my area where I can get it fixed but due to covid restriction I can't get to the places EGO found. So they decided they'll send me a new mower. Once I get it, I'll see if this works and will try and find correct parts and properly fix the whole thing myself. *crosses fingers*
When I depressed the start button and compressed the blade bar the Ego display panel just blinked yellow while the green button light on the battery stayed a steady green. My Ego wouldn't come on until I squeezed the self-propel trigger, then it took off like a racecar. I had to adjust the speed lever and it worked fine -- sometimes, though, I had to try to restart it several times before it stayed running. I might troubleshoot your solution as necessary..
Just when the video started my diagnostic was the switches( below the two green clamps on the right and left sides of the handle) in the handle bar. The switches are a safety feature.
Totally their fault and you are a genius. Actually, I always wanted to disable that fully-extended checking. I'm 5'7, and would like a shorter extension.
OK, to be fair, their bet is nobody would fold it back after each use. If it's folded only off season, their 20( could be higher) gauge wire might pull off. But it's so easy to fold! I kinda ended up folding it up after each use and kinked the wire...
@@jollion actually folding and putting away after each use is A a HUGE selling point. It is a major consideration. After cut quality and power, folding has to be the next major feature.
Im having the same problem, And I'm with you, don't care bout the re wiring and safety since it's only used by 2 of us. But I'm also noticing that the grass is NOT going in the recovery bag completely. Any ideas out there?
Mine just died 2 weeks ago. Bought it August last year. Unfortunately I don't have the wire short problem you have with the handle. It does not register the battery being plugged in at all (even when pressing the headlight switch on top of it). My warranty request got denied since I lost the receipt even though the serial number clearly shows that it is impossible for the mower to be outside the warranty period.
I had the exact same problem on a mower less than a year old. It was the wires from the handle lockout switch so I've removed the switch and wires and added a jumper. From now on I think we'll fold the handle less often as that may have caused the problems.
I connected the black & red wires on the motor (not handle) side of the connector at the male pins in the connector and this stopped this failure to start problem caused by handle position & pinched wire. Other vids show making a jumper wire in the female black & red wire ports. These are in the base and were accessible in my June 2022-bought E-GO mower.
Home Depot is DROPPING the EGO line from all its stores. In one HD store, the $650 model was marked down to $499. It was not advertised, and other HD stores kept the regular price of $650. I guess it's up to each store manager to decide on whether to mark down the price or not. I use the Ryobi push cordless that has been working well for me.
You're a brave man taking something apart with the camera rolling. If I ever did that, Murphy's law would guarantee some piece would go flying off into the lawn and I'd never get it back together.
WARRANTY: I've owned my ego for almost 5 year. I've taken it into Home Depot for this problem four times. Each time it has taken over a month to get fixed. The last time it was at day 55 still 'waiting for parts'. I picked it up and did this fix since it has been an annual problem for me (ant the warranty expires shortly). I like the ego mower. However, this is obviously a design flaw and it would be nice if they would cared enough to implement a better design fix when I had it repaired. Keeping the wire from getting cropped would have been an easy design modification. Bottom line: If you have the ability to do this, skpt the warranty temporary fix headaches. SIDE NOTE ON HOME DEPOT: I kept asking about my mower status. They kept saying 'waiting for parts' which was out of their control. At day 55, I asked more questions. Turns they didn't have any parts on order, but it put that in the notes since there wasn't really couldn't say they hadn't done anything in 55 days of having the mower. Another reason to do this fix yourself.
Help! How do you use the multi-meter to test which cable has gone bad? Where do I stick the red prong and the black prong on my multimeter? I have the multimeter set to DCV 200?
I haven't read through all the comments, but the Ego won't run if the arms are in the shortened position. You have to extend the arms and lock with the green levers in order for the motor to start.
I ran over a plugged in cord to a pressure washer. Shredded the wire and now mower won’t work. The status indicator light is completely off where it used to always be solid green. Battery is fully charged and works cause I put it into the weed wacker and it worked fine. Thought maybe there would be a reset button??? Maybe the live wire fried the mower??? Is it unfixable?
Thank you for this video and the comment by MuckBucket about jumping the red to black wire. I got my mower running again in under 30 minutes. And this video having over 76,000 views is disturbing.

Good to know just bought mine and I just plan to not fold it down and keep it fully extended so I don't get this problem down the road.
Just take the BATTERY OUT after use so it Cannot power on in ANY position....
Nice work. Same issue, same fix. Thank you for posting!
Sweet! I am glad I figured it out! Lol
3 years later and you’re still saving people ✊🏽✊🏽
For real. Lol. So funny. I fix crap all the time. Don’t even know why I posted this. But glad it has helped so many.
Worked for me! You saved this mower from the landfill and I now have a new free electric mower!
Great fix! You just saved my mower. Jumper worked perfectly.
Did it? I am so glad this video helped somebody!!!
Thank you for this, my Ego had exactly the same problem. Here in Australia service is very slow by the importing agents. Your video probably saved me a couple months without a lawn mower.
I am now a subscriber.
Same problem I had too. Thanks for posting !
Thanks for the video... Mine just decided to not start today. Bypassed the handle switch and it work.
Thank you so much for taking the time to create and share this. Your timing and explanations we clear. I was able to properly troubleshoot, get right to the problem, and fixed my mower. Bravo Zulu to you.
This was the problem with my son's mower as well. Thanks for taking the time to do the video.
Years ago, I had a Black and Decker push mower, and I ran it on a wheel chair battery. It worked, but it wasn't the most efficient, but I just charged it when done, and kept it running.
When ever lifting the mower, unplug both batterys. That's the best way to disarm the blades. Nice video
Omg it's driving me crazy that problem as well, and I don't want to send it in to be fixed, thanks for the video, I'll fix it myself as well
Glad I could help!
Unfortunately it didn't work for me, I need to send it in 😕
Thank you so much, this was SO helpful and we resolved the same issue! 😉
Let me know how it goes.
How do you get the top cover off? I removed the 6 screws but it's catching or hitting something as I try to pull it up
I really don’t remember. Sorry.
Thank you for taking the time to do the diagnosing for us, fixed my problem in 10 minutes!
Perfect. Crazy everyone has the same problem.
Thanks for the video. My mower is working again! And yes, the Ego is an awesome mower!
Same issue! Genius fix!
Glad I could help
Where can I find a that jumper cable
Though you made the fix/figured out the problem, I would have still gone through the warranty process and got a new mower anyway. Kudos to the fix though and should help anyone else who comes across this type of issue as I am a DIY person myself. Next summer I am planning to get one of these EGOs despite this type of problem as I have watched enough videos from folks like yourself who are more than pleased with their battery powered mower over a gas version.
Thank you! Saved me tons of time and frustration trying to troubleshoot. Same exact problem.
Glad I could help.
I wouldn't defeat my car's airbags because they may save my life....... ditto here
Great comment, maybe too complicated for many that don't have any electrical knowledge?
Great video! Same thing happened to me after 1 year of household use. Easy fix for $5.
Thank you soo much
I will do this morning exactly what u did.and u are right ,what kind off wire management is that, and nothing holding any wires and sprinkler s
You are welcome
Thanks so much sir for posting a video, quick and easy instead of fixing the wires , I was very close to getting a new one but after UA-cam and finally your video saved me time money and effort , a BIG Thanka
I would have had to drive 1 hour to drop off my mower at a Home Depot w/ Rental Department and wait weeks for repair.
I didn't have any wire handy, I guess you could even use a paperclip. I ended up ordering a pack of jumper wires on Amazon for "Breadbox Prototyping" for 6$. Now I've got a bunch if I ever need them.
Nice work. Had exactly the same problem with red wire. Spliced in a new wire and running fine. Can you say design fault. Love the mower anyway.
Bro thank you for this. I had the same problem with my Ego mower. Same two wires had breaks. I shorted them out at the base and boom mower works again. I really love Ego products but this was a pretty poor design and poorly tested apparently.
Thanks! You've given me some ideas on what to look for.
I will keep this in mind . I just bought one and if I had seen this before I wouldn't have bought. It looks like a poor job and a bunch of plastic junk. My cuts good but I will not fold the handles over at all. All I saw was good things before I bought mine.
Nice job, thanks for sharing! Hopefully they’ve looked at their routing and addressed this in manufacturing.
Great diagnosing video. I had the same issue. Glad to be back in business. Thank you!
Mine got this issue now. Only one year old. I’m pissed.
This is why I switched to the Toro brand.
You are the man. Worked like a charm!
So if I understand this correctly. Never folding it up would prevent this problem. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
I would say that is correct.
Thanks for sharing. I'm working on one now that seems to have a similar issue. You have a new Sub!
I might troubleshoot your solution as necessary..
must be a common problem. I had the same issue. Replaced by EGO.
Just when the video started my diagnostic was the switches( below the two green clamps on the right and left sides of the handle) in the handle bar. The switches are a safety feature.
Same problem here. The small, three-wire cable is too thin of gauge and the conductors are making intermittent contact.
Constant bending of the handle to store the mower. Also cheap Chinese wire.
Did you jump it in the same place as me? I by passed the handle extended switch.
Because of this video I bought a mower for 50 bucks and fixed it, thanks for posting this!!!!!
Good deal!
I used 18 ga doorbell wire to jump it and so far after cutting the entire yard it works.
I think I have same issue...don't know anything about electrical stuff though 😭😭😭
This was not the problem. The wires failed in side the tube from a pinch point.
I think Rick is referring to your attempts to start at 3:15 in the video. The arms are shrunk down instead of fully extended.
Once again UA-cam saved me a ton of money and time.
Same problem on mine. Thanks for the Fix-It tip. Now on the jumper, witch color do you close contact on?
Black and red. The blue wire is a red herring.
Thanks for the video! This was exactly the issue I had and the fix works perfectly.
Thinking about trying this but unsure if it would void warranty as I have 3.5yrs remaining on the warranty.
Great video! Thanks for sharing, very helpful. Grass now cut!
Great video. How long did you have this mower until you had this issue?
One year I think.
Thank you for this video and the comment by MuckBucket about jumping the red to black wire. I got my mower running again in under 30 minutes. And this video having over 76,000 views is disturbing.
Right. I had no clue that this problem was so widespread!
Wire is being crimp (pinched) when the handle is pulled back.
